Am Lit: Do Now (1-13-14)

What binder tab are we still using? (aka what literary movement are we studying?)

Write down any information you know about Fredrick Douglass. Who was that man? Also, what is an abolitionist ?

For my elite thinkers: How could a black man during slavery write a story about himself that would appeal to white readers who have nothing in common with him, and who might even be the enemy in the plight of the slaves?

Monday’s Purpose

Students should refresh Their definition of Realism (the literary

movement). Their definitions of key elements of a writer’s

style In order to: (starting tomorrow)

Be able to analyze Douglass’ story in a similar way to how we analyzed the rhetoric of Jonathon Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” sermon.

Illustrate the qualities of Douglass’s story that make it a part of Realism

Binder work: 1-13-14

First Binder Assignment:

1. Three interesting facts about Fredrick Douglass pg. 558

2. Define all bold terms pg. 559 (Use glossaries in back of textbook)

When done, take a vocab worksheet, read the directions VERY CAREFULLY.

HW: Finish Vocab maps

Take Vocab worksheet Exercise 2. Complete 11-20 using only your vocab maps from yesterday. For each number, write the letter of the correct choice before it, then the vocab word after it.

How did Douglass become so powerful and influential that President Lincoln invited him to the White House for advice?

It wasn’t just Douglass’ story, but how he tells it that is persuasive.

You can read for comprehension and demonstrate analytical abilities via responding to the marginal instructions as we read together today.

First, read for comprehension (understanding) in order to identify Douglass’ purpose for writing this piece.

Second, read to analyze how Douglass’ style makes his story persuasive

When finished, take out Douglass packet

In paragraph form, respond: what is Douglass’ style like overall? Give a textual example of at least three aspects of his style (use your G.O. from end of packet)

I will cold call three random names in addition to any volunteers. If you read, you get dippied. If you cannot answer, you get a demerit.
