A group of natives killed me with a poisoned arrow in my foot and a spear through my heart. After I died, my crew burned my ship. My body was left behind. Out of the five ships that began the journey, only one ship [The Victoria] made the voyage around the world. Out of 250 men, only 18 survived… I was not one of them.

The End of My DaysI never made it to the Spice Islands. I was caught in a war in the Philippine islands.

Gagarin became deputy director of the cosmonaut training base and began to re-qualify as a fighter pilot. In 1968, while on a routine training flight, he and his flight instructor Vladimir Seryogin died in a MiG-15UTI crash. Gagarin and Seryogin were buried in the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square.
