AWESOME WEEKEND Just two days after wrapping up championship hon- ors with her win in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies, Awesome Feather (Awesome of Course--Precious Feather, by Gone West) completed a big weekend for owner/breeder Fred Brei=s Jacks or Better Farm, topping Fasig-Tipton November at $2.3 million to the bid of Frank Stronach=s Adena Springs. The un- derbidder was Michel Zerolo, bid- ding for Martin Schwartz. After signing the ticket on the unbeaten filly, Stronach admitted it was Awe- some Feather=s 2 1/4-length victory at Churchill Friday that convinced him to make the purchase. AWe=re going to continue to race her,@ Stronach said. AI just hope she goes on.@ Stronach called Awesome Feather=s Breeders= Cup effort Apretty impressive.@ Jacks or Better owner Fred Brei was in an understandably jovial mood after watching Awesome Feather stride out of the Fasig-Tipton sales ring. AShe is a tremendous filly,@ Brei said of his Breeders= Cup winner. AFrank will get her where she needs to go.@ Of the decision to sell the juvenile, Brei added, AWe don=t race much out of Florida and, when it comes to going up north, where certainly she belongs, where the Grade Is are coming up for three-year-olds, it was just best for the filly and best for us that she is in somebody else=s hands.@ After her Breeders= Cup win, Brei said the reserve on Awesome Feather would be high. When the filly sold for $2.3 million, he admitted with a laugh that it was, ANever enough,@ but added the price Awas enough to make me smile. It was not much above the reserve. I probably wouldn=t have let her go for below $2 million.@ Cont. p2 KEENELAND NOVEMBER GETS UNDERWAY Off the heels of last evening=s lively trade at Fasig- Tipton=s November Sale at Newtown Paddocks, Keeneland begins its 13-session November Breeding Stock Sale in Lexington. A total of 4,695 horses were initially cata- logued for November, then another 77 lots were added when it was an- nounced that Lance Robinson and Jerry Bailey would conduct a com- plete dispersal of their Gulf Coast Farm. Last year=s November Sale rang up total receipts of $159,727,800, down 13.92 percent from the previ- ous year=s 15-day event. The average of $57,477 was down 6.48 percent, which was generally taken as a more-than-satisfactory result considering the lingering instability of the financial markets, and the median of $20,000 was unchanged. Last year=s November sale was the boosted by the dispersal of the W.T. Young family=s Overbrook Farm, which saw 148 horses bring $31,760,000--an average of $214,595. The dispersal, the second biggest in Keeneland history, yielded the sale=s highest price: Honest Pursuit (Storm Cat), a four-year-old daughter of the brilliantly bred Honest Lady (Seattle Slew), who sold as a broodmare prospect for $3.1 million to Wertheimer et Frere. Awesome Weekend cont.

Fred Brei established Jacks or Better Farm in Ocala in1997. He had success last year, selling promising

young colt Jackson Bend(Hear No Evil) after heswept the Florida Stallionseries. Racing for RobertLaPenta this term, JacksonBend was second in the GII Holy Bull S., GI Fountainof Youth S. and GI WoodMemorial and third in the GI Preakness S. AwesomeFeather swept the fillies=version of the Florida Stal-lion series this year. AI sellthem when they get to thislevel, not before,@ Brei ex-plained of his operation,

which produces 14 to 16 foals a year. AI sold JacksonBend when he got to this level last year.@ Brei still owns Awesome Feather=s dam, PreciousFeather. The 13-year-old mare is in foal to Consolidator, but Brei has a pretty good idea who she will be bred tonext spring. ANext year, she=ll probably be in foal toAwesome of Course, I would think,@ he smiled.-JM

Southern Equine Lands a Jewel at Fasig-Tipton... Careless Jewel (Tapit--Sweet and Careless, byHennessy), a brilliant 11-length victress of the presti-gious GI Alabama S. last term, brought $1.95 millionfrom Mike Moreno=s Southern Equine Stable atSunday=s Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Lincoln Collins, owner and president of Kern Thoroughbreds, was un-derbidder. The always entertaining trainer/SouthernEquine bloodstock advisor Eric Guillot signed the ticketafter doing his bidding from the balcony adjacent to thepress box. The millionaire, consigned by Hill >n= DaleSales Agency as a broodmare prospect as hip 97, failedto make it back to the races after a disappointing run inthe 2009 GI Breeders= Cup Ladies= Classic at SantaAnita.

AShe=s white, Christmas is coming, snowflakes,@Guillot joked of the roan=s ap-peal as Hill >n= Dale=s DonatoLanni stopped by and poppedthe collar on his dark blueChampagne d=Oro jacket.AMike and I are all about foun-dation mares, and this is onethat fits the bill. Her body, hip, pedigree on the bottom sideand her race record before shegot hurt--that=s what we=relooking for. She=s going to bea nice addition to SouthernEquine. I was hoping to gether for $1.3 or $1.4 million, but wouldn=t back out. I hadto have her. They=re not selling a lot of these kinds rightnow. Tapit=s going really well as a sire. Mike and I aretrying to land the big ones only.@ Guillot doesn=t have a stallion in mind yet for the four-year-old daughter of the unraced mare Sweet and Care-less. Her dam, a half-sister to MGISW Subordination(Mt. Livermore), brought $900,000 while carrying afull-sister to Careless Jewel at last year=s KEENOV sale.Careless Jewel joins a loaded Southern Equinebroodmare band, led by Broodmare of the Year BetterThan Honour (Deputy Minister). The dam of championRags to Riches (A.P. Indy), GI Belmont S. hero Jazil(Seeking the Gold) and GII Peter Pan S. hero CasinoDrive (Mineshaft) was acquired for a record $14 millionat this sale two years ago. The former Parrish Hill Farmnear Lexington, purchased by Southern Equine a coupleof years ago, will be open for business Nov. 15, ac-cording to Guillot. ABetter Than Honour is doing great,@ he said. AShe=sback in foal to Street Cry (Ire); she has a weanling byhim. I think we=ll breed her to Medaglia d=Oro next year,or maybe even Mineshaft. He=s coming around; it wouldbe the same cross as Rags to Riches, and we=d have afull to Casino Drive, who I loved and wanted to buy.@ -SS

Jewel of a Sale Inspires Mixed Emotions... Donna and Vern Dubinsky paid $40,000 for a daugh-ter of Tapit out of the 2007 Keeneland September sale, named her Careless Jewel and campaigned her to wins

in the GI Alabama S.,GII Delaware Oaks andGII Fitz Dixon CotillionS. They returned thegray filly to the salesring yesterday atFasig-Tipton, whereshe attracted a finalbid of $1.95 million. But as the couple, standing with thefilly=s trainer JosieCarroll, received con-gratulations from alarge group, they ad-mitted the momentwas bittersweet. AIreally didn=t want to

sell, but we did,@ Vern Dubinsky said. Donna Dubinskyechoed her husband=s sentiments. AIt=s just a part of thegame,@ she said. AFor today, it was a good price.@Carroll added, AIt=s tough to see her go.@ Careless Jewelwas consigned by John Sikura=s Hill >n= Dale SalesAgency. Sikura understood the Dubinsky=s mixed emo-tions. AHe=s a guy that loves the horse, not the money,@Sikura said of Vern Dubinsky. AThat=s unique, and it=sgreat to be involved with someone that genuine.@ Ofthe price tag, Sikura added, AAfter a million, it can getlight. I thought this mare could bring from between $1million and $1.5 million. She had immense quality, andshe=s unique. Eric=s trying to buy the best mares in theworld, and he went and got her. She sold very well, and she=s worth every dime. We=re absolutely happywith the price.@

Cool-Mo: Team Coolmore Lands Uncle Mo Dam... Playa Maya (Arch--Dixie Slippers, by Dixieland Band),the dam of the undefeated pro-temtwo-year-old champion Uncle Mo(Indian Charlie), was hammereddown to Coolmore interests lastnight for $1.65 million. M.V.Magnier, son of Coolmore principalJohn Magnier, signed the ticket forthe 10-year-old, selling in foal toBroken Vow. A group of Japanese, stationed out back under the bidspotters= stand, were the immedi-ate underbidders. Craig and Holly Bandoroff=s DenaliStud consigned the dark bay as hip 122. Uncle Mo, a J “TDN Rising Star” J, took the GI Champagne S.at Belmont, then knocked one out of the park with adominating win in Saturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile.Uncle Mo is owned by Repole Stable and trained byTodd Pletcher. AShe=s a very nice mare, and the horse [Uncle Mo]was very impressive over the weekend, and we reallyliked her,@ said Magnier, who stood along the inside railof the rear walking along with Paul Shanahan and twoother associates. Magnier said it was undecidedwhether the mare would stay in America at Ashford orhead to Coolmore=s operation in Ireland. AWe=ll talkabout it,@ he said. AThere are no immediate plans, butwe=ll think of something.@ Playa Maya is by Arch, sire of Saturday=s GI Breeders=Cup Classic winner Blame and recognized as a verygood turf sire. Playa Maya herself won on the sod, andMagnier confirmed the versatility in her pedigree addedto her appeal. AThere=s a couple of options open there, so we=ll haveto go to the drawing board,@ he said about matingdecisions. As the interview wound down, Magnier was asked bya reporter, AIf Uncle Mo didn=t win Saturday, do youbuy this mare?@ Magnier considered the question for asecond and then said with a smile, AShe=s a nice mareand he=s a very good horse--and he did win.@

Cavey Enjoys Playa Maya Sales Success... Dr. Mike Cavey=s walk from inside the sales paviliontowards the back walking ring was continually inter-rupted by well-wishers after Playa Maya (Arch) sold for$1.65 million yesterday, but the veterinarian didn=tseem to mind. The 10-year-old mare, dam of Saturday=sGI Breeders= Cup Juvenile winner Uncle Mo (IndianCharlie), was consigned by Craig Bandoroff=s DenaliStud. Asked if he was satisfied by the seven-figureprice tag, Cavey said, AIt=s low,@ before breaking into abroad smile and adding, ANo. I=m just kidding. I wasvery pleased. In this market, you really can=t tell. Youalways hope for more, but what do they say? Pigs getfat and hogs get slaughtered. So we=re happy with it.@Cavey admitted that parting with Playa Maya Aalwayswill be bittersweet.@ It sounds like watching Uncle Modominate the Juvenile at Churchill Downs was a rau-cous affair for Cavey and Bandoroff. AI guess I was alittle excited, wasn=t I, Craig,@ Cavey dead panned as ahoarse Bandoroff croaked, ANone of us can talk.@ Caveyconcluded, AIt was a very good day.@-JM

Japanese Make Deep Impact... Members of Japan=s first family of racing, theYoshidas, were busy during last night=s action at New-town Paddocks, purchasing three of the top six lots. Terry Yoshida=s Shadai Farm saw off representatives ofCoolmore to purchase the four-year-old Serious Attitude(Ire) (Mtoto {GB}--Zameyla {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}),recent upsetter of the GI Nearctic S. against males atWoodbine, for $1.85 million. Sweezey & Partners, agent, consigned Serious Attitude as hip 146. Shadai=s Mitsuru Ikeda, standing with several associ-ates out back, resolutely staved off a challenge from acollective just 10 yards away that included Coolmore=sM.V. Magnier and Paul Shanahan, BBA Ireland=s AdrianNichol and Australian owner/breeder Bob Scarborough.Ikeda said the filly would be retired and sent to Japan. AHer pasterns were a little bit long, but her walkingwas very, very nice,@ said Ikeda when asked about themare=s appeal. Serious Attitude was also the winner ofthe G1 Cheveley Park S. at two.

Shadai also made a play for--and landed--the night=sfourth highest priced mare, MGISW Gabby=s Golden Gal

(Medaglia d=Oro--GabriellinaGiof {GB},by Ashkalani {Ire}),who went for $1.25 million. AShe=s the perfect combina-tion; very speedy and thebreeding is good,@ Ikeda saidof the former Bob Baffertcharge, who was unplaced inthe GI Breeders= Cup Filly &Mare Sprint coming off a lay-off. AShe was bought to bebred. We=re not sure who shewill be bred to, maybe to a

son of Sunday Silence. We also have [G1 King GeorgeVI and Queen Elizabeth S. winner] Harbinger now [atShadai]. But it will be a very good stallion.@ Don Robinson=s Winter Quarter Farm sold Gabby=sGolden Gal for her owner and breeder Arnold Zetcher aship 69. It was the second time Robinson=s outfit hadbrought the filly to the market at Fasig. In 2007, WinterQuarter offered Gabby=s Golden Galas a yearling, but she went unsold at$120,000. Zetcher was rewardedwith wins in the GI Acorn S. atBelmont in 2009 and the GI SantaMonica S. earlier this term. Terry Yoshida=s brother, NorthernFarm=s Katsumi Yoshida, purchasedFriday=s GI Breeders= Cup Filly & MareSprint heroine Dubai Majesty (Es-sence of Dubai--Great Majesty, byGreat Above) for $1.1 million.Katsumi=s son Shunseke Yoshida, positioned out back, saw off a num-ber of challengers for the filly. Repre-sentatives of SS Bloodstock, who=d earlier purchasedDon=t Forget Gil (Kafwain) for $200,000, were on thephone with Fasig-Tipton=s Max Hodge, and were thedirect underbidders. Cont. p5

Deep Impact cont.

AWe=ll retire her, and we=re going to take her home,@said Yoshida, a regular at the bloodstock sales whotook advantage of Churchill=s close proximity to attendthe Breeders= Cup over the weekend. What he sawfrom Dubai Majesty, who aired by 2 1/4 lengths as an8-1 chance, left him impressed. AWe saw her winningat Churchill Downs, and we saw her this morning, andshe=s gorgeous,@ said Yoshida. AShe=s got a lot ofspeed. The race she won the other day was fantastic. Iknew about her, but after seeing her win the other day,we decided we wanted to take her home.@ Yoshida also purchased Grade I winner Franny Freud(Freud--Frankly Fran, by D=Accord) for $560,000. Of-fered by Hidden Brook, agent, as hip 59, the three-year-old New York-bred was one of the top sprinting fillies inthe nation before being derailed by injury. Owned bybreeder Anthony Grey along with Paul Pompa Jr. andStephen Yarbrough, she won the GI Prioress S. atBelmont and the GII Beaumont S. at Keeneland. -LM

From 7,500gns to $1.85 Million, a ‘Serious’ Score... When conditioner Rae Guest, a trainer with limitedname recognition in the U.S., laid eyes on Serious Atti-tude (Ire) as a yearling at the Tattersalls October Sale in

2007, she was an immature sortwith some growing to do, andher sire, the reliable Mtoto (GB),wasn=t particularly popular com-mercially. But Guest liked thefilly, and went to a modest7,500gns to buy her, later sellinga three-quarter interest to DerekWillis. During the summer of thefilly=s two-year-old year, the men

began to get the impression they=d landed a bargain. AShe really just bloomed,@ said Guest, who was onhand to watch Serious Attitude sell last night. AAs ayearling, she was very late-looking, which is why shedidn=t make any money in the ring. And Mtoto was nota popular horse at that time. He=s a good old horse, butwas a bit out of favor.@

Serious Attitude won her debut at Windsor in Augustof 2008, took the Listed Dick Poole Fillies' S. secondtime out, then kept her record unbeaten in the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket. At three, she added the G3 Summer S. at York. Thisyear, the recruiting team at Fasig-Tipton came callingand asked that they consider putting the mare in theNovember Sale. Willis and Guest agreed, and then hada thought: why not take a shot at the GI Nearctic S. atWoodbine, if we=re shipping across the pond anyway? AThey courted us long before we considered any racein North America,@ Guest said. As it turned out, Serious Attitude greatly enhancedher own value when she stormed home from secondlast to post the 23-1 upset in theNearctic Oct. 16. Asked about expectations com-ing into November, Guest said, AIthought that if she didn=t make amillion dollars, than everybody=slost the plot. She=s a dual Grade Iwinner--what more do you wantout of a horse? She=s 100 percentclean and sound. There are noproblems at all. So if she didn=tmake a million dollars, why haveGrade I races? When you get here, everybody=s worried about theeconomy and this and that. It=s anervous time before the sale. Butin the end, it worked out great.@ Wayne Sweezy, whose Sweezy and Partners con-signed Serious Attitude as hip 146, was happy for thefilly=s owners. AThey=ve had a wonderful ride with thishorse. All we did was close the last chapter for them. Rae Guest is a fabulous guy, and Derek Willis is anothergreat man. I=m going back to have some champagnewith them right now.@ Before retreating to the bar, Sweezy, who struck outon his own after spending many years at Darby Dan,confirmed it was his operation=s biggest success todate. "Hopefully, it won't be the last,@ he added. -LM

Kept in Training, Dubai Majesty Rewards... One year ago, Taylor Made Sales Agency cataloguedDubai Majesty as hip 77 for her owners, Dan Morganand Martin Racing Stable. But the racemare=s trainer,Bret Calhoun, made a play to keep her in training. AHe thought that she could have a big year this year,@said Taylor Made=s Mark Taylor. ABret has never hadowners who could buy expensive horses before, so hedecided to take his inexpensive ones and make themexpensive.@ That=s a strategy that typically works only on thechalkboard, but Calhoun=s confidence in Dubai Majesty, now five, was well-founded. Initially slow to come around, Dubai Majesty won herfirst two races against claiming company. But she be-

gan to blossomat the end ofher three-year-old campaignand finishedthird in the GII IndianaOaks and GII Raven RunS. At four, sheadded the GIII WinningColors, but itwas at five that

she would really blossom. In a career season, DubaiMajesty repeated in the Winning Colors, then finishedthird in the GI Princess Rooney S. at Calder in July. Herversatility was underscored in her final four starts. Shewon the Incredible Revenge S. on the grass atMonmouth, finished second by a head in the GIII Presque Isle Downs Masters S. on the Tapeta, thencaptured the GII Thoroughbred Club of America S. overKeeneland=s PolyTrack in her penultimate start. Shebecame the first of Calhoun=s Breeders= Cup winnersFriday; on Saturday, he took the GIII Turf Sprint withChamberlain Bridge (War Chant). Taylor Made once again was tasked with consigningduties, selling Dubai Majesty as hip 47. AI thought that was fair,@ Mark Taylor said of theprice. AI think she=s the prototype of what people arelooking for in the modern racehorse. She won gradedstakes on all three surfaces and was tough--she ran 34times. She=s what everyone wants. No matter whatracing jurisdiction you go to, she takes her racetrackwith her. And she was very good looking.@ -LM

Alpha Delta Broodmare Band Expands by Two Bloodstock agent Reynolds Bell, acting on behalf ofJohn Clay=s Alpha Delta Stables, purchased a pair ofmares at the Fasig-Tipton sale yester-day for matching $1.05-million pricetags. Bell first signed the ticket forLove to Dance (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells). The five-year-old holds the distinctionof being the first mare in foal to Euro-pean superstar Sea the Stars (Ire)(Cape Cross {Ire}) sold at public auc-tion. Late in Sunday=s sale, Bell paidthe same amount for Win McCool (Gi-ant=s Causeway), in foal to DistortedHumor. While the two mares are dis-tinctly different types, Bell was attracted to them forsimilar reasons. ALook at the families,@ Bell said. AI mean, the firstmare was by Sadler=s Wells from a fantastic family. Shewas Group 2 placed and in foal to Sea the Stars, who isprobably the best horse we=ve seen in Europe in threedecades.@ Love to Dance is a half-sister to European championsDylan Thomas (Ire) (Danehill) and Queen=s Logic (Ire)(Grand Lodge). As for graded stakes winner Win McCool, Bell added,

AWin McCool had a lot of abilityon the racetrack. She=s from aterrific family, and in foal toDistorted Humor.@ Win McCool=s first foal, a fillyby Unbridled=s Song, brought$825,000 at last year=sKeeneland September sale. Belladmitted he thought he hadgotten a bargain for bothmares. AI=ll be honest with you, I was

AThese mares are just what he=s look-ing for,@ Bell said. AJohn is putting together a commer-cial broodmare band. He=s been working on it for thelast couple or three years.@ Clay purchased Summer Raven (Summer Squall), infoal to Unbridled=s Song, for $1.7 million at last year=sKeeneland November sale. New Dubai Syndicate Announces Its Presence... Ajay Anne, acting on behalf of an undisclosed Dubai-based syndicate, made a big splash at Fasig-Tiptonyesterday, signing three tickets for a total of$1,945,000. Sophomore filly Crisp (El Corredor--Cat=sFair, by Sir Cat), heroine of the GI Santa Anita Oaks

over division leader BlindLuck (Pollard=s Vision) inMarch, led the way for thegroup at $900,000 early inthe session. SouthernEquine=s Eric Guillot, biddingfrom his usual balcony spot, dropped out late in the ac-tion. AI bought the horse for asyndicate in Dubai--it=s justin the process,@ Anne re-vealed of the GIII SantaYsabel S. victress. AIt=s aThoroughbred Fund, you

could say. We=re collecting investors from differentcountries and buying high-quality horses and stallionprospects. We=re looking for very specific quality. We=rebuying the best possible horses that we can.@ Campaigned by Michael Talla, the $160,000 KEESEPgraduate switched to grass in her last three starts forJohn Sadler, including a runner-up finish in Hollywood=sLe Cle S. July 1 and a close fourth in the GII SanClemente H. at Del Mar. From the family of GISWWhywhywhy (Mr.Greeley), she was con-signed as a racing/broodmare prospect byBluewater Sales LLC,Agent LXXVIII as hip 37. AShe=s a [Grade I] win-ner; there are morestakes horses comingout of group horses,@ hesaid of her appeal. AAt the end of the day, she=ll bejoining the broodmare band of the company. ElCorredor has done very well. She traces back to a verygood family as well. All three dams are stakes produc-ers. We thought she=d be a good purchase.@ Will Crisp be heading to the desert? AI can=t really comment on that at the moment,@ Anneresponded. AWe=ll probably send her back to JohnSadler and take it from there.@ Anne also signed the dockets on Little Bonnet(Coronado=s QuestBValid Bonnet, by Valid Appeal) (hip 93), the 10-year-old dam of GI Breeders= Cup Juve-nile runner-up Boys at Tosconova (Officer) for$725,000; and hip 154, the graded stakes winningmare Sky Mom (Maria=s MonBSwiftly Classic, by SkyClassic), in foal to Tiznow, for $320,000. -SS

Warbling to Joneses for $1.1 Million... Aaron and Marie Jones could have one of the dearestlots in today=s opening session of the Keeneland No-vember Sale when they offer the 12-year-old MGISWGolden Ballet (Moscow Ballet), dam of this year=s

GI Belmont S. heroDrosselmeyer (Dis-torted Humor) aship 161 (see hiphappenings, p13)through TaylorMade Sales. Butwith Fasig-Tiptondrawing to a closelast night, MarieJones played therole of buyer, secur-ing the four-year-oldGSW Warbling (Un-bridled=s Song--Im-passion, byShadeed), for $1.1

million. Taylor Made consigned the filly, selling as abroodmare prospect only, as hip 174 (ThoroStridevideo). Taylor Made was offering Warbling for ownerJoe Sutton, who had purchased the striking gray--fromTaylor Made, incidentally--as a yearling for $260,000.Racing for Sutton and trainer Eddie Kenneally, Warblingwon this year=s GII Inside Information S. at Gulfstreamand was twice placed in Grade I sprints. She was firstor second in six of nine and earned $352,293. Jonesdid her bidding from the last row of seats in the salespavilion while sitting alongside Doug Cauthen and FrankTaylor, both advisors to the Joneses. AI think she fitsour broodmare band very well,@ said Jones. AFranklooked at her, Doug looked at her, and we all agreedthat she was the one we wanted.@ Cauthen, who re-cently announced he was leaving his position atWinStar Farm, said the mare simply had the goods.AShe could be accepted to any stallion in the country,@he said. AWe=ll get together and make a plan [as to whatstallion she=ll go to].@

That’s a Wrap... Nine horses reached seven figures at yesterday=sFasig-Tipton November Sale, led by GI Breeders= CupJuvenile Fillies heroine Awesome Feather (Awesome ofCourse) at $2.3 million. In total, 89 horses brought$27,996,500 for an average of $314,567 and a medianof $130,000. During last year=s trade, 80 head grossed$28,905,000, good for an average of $361,313 and amedian of $170,000. Fasig-Tipton Chairman WaltRobertson, who announced his retirement in October, received a stirring standing ovation from the largecrowd still on hand at Newton Paddocks as the finalhorse went under the hammer. AIt felt pretty similar tome,@ Robertson said when asked to process the num-bers. AIt seemed like we were real active at nine million-plus mares. We had a lot of very nice horses. Therewas plenty of play once you got to the $100,000 level.Prior to getting to that level, it was pretty sticky.@ Didhaving the Breeders= Cup held at Churchill Downs thispast weekend help at all? AI think that it brought every-body to town, but for this sale, any buyer in the worldis going to be here anyway. Everybody that needed tobe here was here,@ Robertson continued, adding AIwould=ve liked to sell more horses to Europe. I don=tthink it=s fair to blame it on the Breeders= Cup, it=s still astruggling economy we=re in. It applies to everybody.@

MARKET CORRECTION Compounding the financialmarket=s crash in 2008 was the breeding industry=sown problem with overproduction: too many mediocremares were being bred, and the stud fees invested in

them often weren=t cheap. Over thelast few breeding seasons, consider-ably fewer mares have been bred--this year=s figure of 40,576 maresbred represented a 31.7 percent slidefrom 2006. Breeders who took it onthe chin have been trying to slimdown their broodmare bands, andKeeneland=s Director of SalesGeoffrey Russell said that trend isn=tabout to reverse itself. AWe are still inthe midst of a correction, and there

are some people who have to sell, whether they wantto or not,@ Russell said yesterday. AIt=s something we=reworking through still. Most commercial breeders arethinking or saying, >If we can make it through 2010,we=ll be okay.=@ Russell added that even though 2010 weanlings wereproduced from lower, post-meltdown stud fees--and,likewise, mares who are now in foal generally havemuch lower stud fees invested into them--breeders arestill struggling. ABecause the production costs for thisyear=s yearlings were so high, it has affected the cashflow for many breeders,@ said Russell. AI think one ofthe things that=s going to be missing from this year=ssale is the breeder who had a good yearling sale andwants to buy another mare. People had a better-than-anticipated September Sale, but for the mid-size tosmaller breeder, not enough to re-invest in anothermare.@ In addition to the Gulf Coast dispersal, Novemberoffers dispersals from Clovelly Farm, Stud TNT andIrving Cowan, and a reduction from the powerful PhippsStable. Despite the firepower on offer, Russell doesn=texpect them to measure up to the Overbrook dispersal.AI don=t think, combined, they=ll have the same impactas a major dispersal like Overbrook Farm, which hadhorses from the top and running all the way throughthe sale,@ said Russell. AIt added something like $30million to our sale. The other thing the dispersal did wasto put value on horses in general, because they soldwithout reserve. They brought what they brought, and Ithink that helped people appraise their horses.@ For thecatalogue and complete outs, visitwww.keeneland.com.

Whatever injury problems the chestnut hadto contend with during his spell in the wilderness, heshowed he had lost little of his former ability whentaking the G3 Strensall S. over 1 1/8 miles at York Aug. 20 and when a head second to Fuisse (Fr) (GreenTune) in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp Sept. 5.Stepping up a quarter mile after his Vittorio di Capuavictory, he was patiently ridden near the back of thepack early by Dettori, who had jetted in after his GI BCTurf win a few hours earlier. Creeping into the fray atthe top of the stretch, he swooped on last year's win-ner Voila Ici with a furlong remaining and was pushedout to assert as the 2008 Premio Roma hero Estejostayed on for third. Dettori was registering a 100thGroup 1 win for Godolphin in the process, 16 years onfrom his initial success on Balanchine (Storm Bird) inthe Epsom Oaks. Diana Cooper, representingGodolphin, commented, "That was a fabulous perfor-mance from Rio de la Plata today, and the horse reallyis going from strength to strength at the moment.@

Cooper added, AThe horse travelled supremely well, and nothing was going to beat him. It was fantastic forFrankie to get his 100th Group 1 winner for Godolphinin such emphatic style. Everyone at Godolphin is de-lighted--it is a tremendous achievement. We are notsure where Rio de la Plata will go next. We will takehim home and see where we go from there. The horseis in such fantastic form at the moment, so hopefullywe can find something for him." Click for the RacingPost chart, the brisnet.com PPs, or the free brisnet.comcatalogue-style pedigree. BC Classic Notes cont.

Looking back on the colt=s championship-caliber per-formance, Stall offered, AI loved the trip he was having.

I liked the way it wassetting up. He had a littlescrimmage on the frontend at the quarter pole, but when he got throughthere and kind of pushedLookin At Lucky (SnartStrike) out of the way, here comes Zenyatta, and they both just madetracks for the wire.@ The New Orleans na-tive added, AI know theZenyatta people aren'thappy with the outcome, but, believe me, she did-

n't lose anything in defeat. As everybody knows, she'sthe best racemare there's ever been in the game.@ As for Stall=s other BC runner J.B.=s Thunder (ThunderGulch), who beat just one under the wire in the GI BCJuvenile, he said, AHe didn=t run too well. We weredisappointed in him--he had been training real well. So,we=ll regroup with him.@

Shirreffs Confirms Retirement There had been speculation that Zenyatta (Street Cry{Ire}) might be kept in training for another season, buttrainer John Shirreffs said Sunday that was not theplan. The six-year-old will return to California, but onlyfor a brief stay. AShe=ll be there for about a month,@Shirreffs said, adding, AThat=s the thing about racing. As a trainer, you have to learn to let go. Heck, she=sbeen a champion for three years, and she=s going to agreat place.@ But the conditioner is unlikely to be watch-ing the replay of the mare=s spectacular GI Breeders=Cup Classic effort any time soon. AIt was her last race,@he said. AIt=s all over. Why watch it again?@ Analyzing Zenyatta=s effort in the Classic, Shirreffscommented, AIt=s unfortunate that she drops so farback. It left her too much to do.@ But, he continued,AYou always have that hope that she=ll get there whenyou see her lower her head and start stretching out.@ The trainer had no criticism for Mike Smith after therace. AWhat could I say?@ Shirreffs remarked. AI justpatted him on the shoulder. He was devastated.@ The rest of her connections were as well. AIt=s been a fairy tale, and you want all fairy tales tocome true,@ Shirreffs concluded. Zenyatta was scheduled to fly west Sunday night.Breeding plans have not been finalized.

Quality Road Exits Classic in Good Order Quality Road (Elusive Quality), who faded down thelane in the GI BC Classic, came out of the race in goodshape, according to Todd Pletcher. As for his disap-

pointing performance, thetrainer remarked, AJohnny[Velazquez] said he never, never gripped the track. The one thing we kind ofwanted to do was to gethim off the rail at somepoint. We felt that if maybethere were any quirksabout the track it was thatthe inside path was the

worst. [Velazquez] never was able to get out of thatposition with him, and was always stuck down inside.Johnny said the track was cupping away from him, andhe never could get going.@

We've been making her finish in themornings and look at the results today.@ As for theadded yardage, Garcia added, AI think she's alwayswanted a distance. She's got a really long stride and Ithink she's going to be a good filly. From five andone-half furlongs to go a mile and one-sixteenth is reallya big difference.
