Monday, October 19, 2015• HOMEWORK: Make 10 vocab flash cards: direct

evidence, indirect evidence, pressure, Alfred Wegner, Pangaea, convection current, heat transfer, convection, conduction, and radiation

• Quiz on Earth's interior on Wed 10/21

OBJECTIVE: I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

• DO NOW: Turn in Earths Interior HW. No HW=Pink Slip!

• Use notes to make 9 vocab flash cards: crust, continental crust, oceanic crust, mantle, lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, inner core

• Alfred Wegner - a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist

• Wegner’s Hypothesis: All the continents were once joined together in a single landmass and have since drifted apart.

– The continents were joined together about 300 million years ago in a supercontinent called Pangaea.

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

– What do you think of Wegner’s theory?

Alfred Wegner and Convection Currents –Doc#

– Why do you think many people doubted his hypothesis?

– Do you think Wegener’s hypothesis seems possible?

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

• There are three types of heat transfer: radiation, convection, and conduction.

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

• Heat is constantly being transferred inside Earth

• When an object is heated, the particles that make up the object move faster = more energy

• The movement of energy from warmer objects to cooler objects is called heat transfer

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

Heat Transfers

– Radiation – transfer of energy that is carried in rays (ex. sun warming skin)

– Convection – heat transfer by the movement of a fluid (ex. air currents)

– Conduction – heat transfer between materials that are touching (ex. feet on hot sand)

Alfred Wegner and Convection Currents –Doc#

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

• Convection current – the movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from one particle to another

• Heating and cooling of a fluid , changes in fluid’s density, and the force of gravity combine to set convection currents in motion

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

• Heat from the core and the mantle cause convection currents in the mantle

• There are also convection currents in the outer core – causing Earth’s magnetic field

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer

Convection Currents in the Mantle

COLD is more dense so it sinks.

HEAT is less dense so it rises.

CrustMantle

MantleOuter Core

Heat from Outer Core warms the rock. The rock becomes less dense and rises in the Mantle.

Cold from Crust cools the rock. The rock becomes more dense and sinks in the Mantle.

Lava Lamps and Convection Currents

• Create a diagram of a lava lamp. • Label the parts of the lamp.• Illustrate the movement of the wax and label the

direction of its movement.• Explain the reason for the movement of the wax in the

lava lamp.

Lava Lamps and Convection Currents

• Create a model that explains how a lava lamp is a convection current.

How does the movement of the wax in a lava lamp compare to the movement of the rock in the mantle?

(HINT: What three things set convection currents into motion?)

I will be able to explain Alfred Wegner’s ideas about continents. I will be able to describe different types of heat transfer
