The new traffic flow cre-ated from Wilhelminastraatto L.G.Smith Boulevard orWeststraat via Schelpstraatwill remain this way for thenext eight weeks until thework in the Havenstraat iscompleted. that the work of thestreetscape, to be carried outby Mantbraca Corporation, will be executed in phases. The first phase will begin atthe La Linda Store on, up tothe corner of Dufry. Phasetwo continues up to the BonBini Bazaar, with the finalphase extending all the wayup to Niki Habibe.

The government is stress-ing that all the work is ex-pected to be completed by themonth of December with thestreetcar in operation by theend of the year. Although, itappears that no one is holdingtheir breath on this!

Reportedly, the streetcar, once in operation, will betravelling from the Paarden-baaistraat clear up to thePlaza Comercio and backwhile making eight stops en-route.

For the older children, anti-drug lectures by local celebri-ties the students admire, haveproven to be effective. Thislast technique will also be ap-plied to the older children insecondary schools.

Thedestructive power of drug

abuse on the individual andtheir loved ones is graphi-cally displayed, as well as thestruggle and triumph of thosewho have overcome it.

Finally, Jeanira Kock-Wernet explained the RedRibbon Program from FADAfor 2012. Recently, the governmentdedicated a series of meetingswith different organizationsand institutions on the isanddiscussing the issue of Valeroand trying to reach agree-ments that could benefitthose Valero employees whowill be laid off. The meetingswere held in the RenaissanceConference Center. Everyoneinvited responded and was inattendance.

The object of the initiativeof the goverment is to comeup with options to facilitatethe process of the transition;not just alternatives with re-spect to jobs, but also the fa-cility to comply with theirfinancial commitments untilthey can regain their stability.

The meetings included aninterchange of informationand ideas with 100 public andprivate companies with thepotential for making a differ-ence in the situation. OnTuesday afternoon they satdown with representatives ofconstruction companies, thereafter with the banks, then Aruba Tourism Author-ity, Central Bank, IMSAM,

and others. On the first daythey closed the day meetingwith NV Companies of thegovernment like Aruba Air-port Authority, Elmar andAruba Ports Authority, toname a few.

The banks, reportedlyhave indicated their willing-ness to sit down with each in-dividual Valero employeewho has financial obligationswith the bank to offer someflexibility in their particularsituation. They are preparedto offer favorable agreementsto these employees.

Apparently, the group ofemployees from Valero areexpertly trained and veryskilled workers whose expe-

rience woud enrich any localcompany or entity. The gov-ernment relied heavily onPaul Arends during thesemeetings because of hisknowledge of the Valero per-sonnel and their capacity.

The government is stillholding out the hope that thesituation may turn around forthe better and that the refin-ery will succeed in finding abuyer or new operator. Nego-tiations reportedly, have notceased. There is a window ofopportunity open for a possi-ble parnter or buyer betweennow and the end of the year, according to Prime MninisterEman.

The fight is still on; the Uri-rama area is still being threat-ened by monster windmills tobe erected there. One thing issure, people all across this is-land are 100% in favor of al-ternative energy for Aruba. The idea of being 100% freefrom fossil fuels and of re-ducing our cost of energyproduction and consumptionexcites every citizen here!

But, it is also very obviousthat a large percentage of thecommunity is very concernedabout how to exactly goabout accomplishing thisnoble objective. It appearsthat only those heavily polit-ically aligned are clamoringblindly for continuing withthe Urirama plans. It is so sadto listen to these personsmake their pitch for settingup the monstrous windmillson the Urirama site in totaloblivion to the myriad of ev-idence presented regardingthe health hazard that thesemills pose for human beingsin the vicinity.

The reports of the devas-tating health consequencesfor windmills in populatedareas (within less than 2Kilometers) come from seri-ous and reputable studiesdone by American, Dutchand German concerns. TheDutch, who at one time wasall out to building more andmore windmill parks, haverecently publically declaredthat they can no longer pro-ceed in light of the evidencesurfacing all over about thehealth hazard these millspose to their citizens. There isa country wide mandate toput a hold on any other wind-mill project in Holland untilthey can be dead certain that

there is no health damagefrom wind mills to citizens.

Again, those politicallyaligned have invented vari-ous non-founded argumentsto reason away the Dutch’shalt on these projects in de-fense of Aruba continuingwith theirs. Be that as it may,it is clear that to any trulyhonest, open and concernedcitizen, the risks are too greatto continue blindly with set-ting up these mills at Uri-rama.

If you choose to ignore thehealth consequences and con-centrate solely on the eco-nomic value of such aproject, one has to questionthe good sense of our govern-ment officials and ask howcould it possibly be that thearithmetic for coming upwith a profit does not add upand they cannot see this!

For example, the govern-ment is claiming that the Uri-rama project will bring Arubato a production of 50% ofclean energy. This is the in-formation that is being circu-lated every where and by allparties involved. While, withall due respect, the evidenceproves totally otherwise! Ac-cording to their own advisersand the government, theVader Piet project delivers20% of energy for Aruba andUrirama will produce another20%, then the solar park willaccount for 10%. This willbring the total production ofclean energy to 50%. So that, they claim, that the remain-ing 50% will be an easy stepto take to bring the total to100% of clean energy.

But, this information issimply not accurate! When Iread the presentation made

by WEB to the Aruba Parlia-ment about Urirama it clearlystates that Vader Piet is cur-rently producing 12% energy, and that Urirama (because ofwind factor problems about25% of the energy will not beusable) will produce about9% of usable energy! Whichmeans, according to the pro-fessionals at WEB, the totalamount of wind energy to-gether with Urirama will be21% and not 40% as is beingfalsely proclaimed every-where!

During the presentation ofthe Airport Solar Park proj-

ect, it was made clear thatthat solar project will accountfor about 3% of energy pro-duction! When you do thearithmetic and add it all upyou get a total of 24% be-tween Vader Piet, Uriramaand the Airport Solar Parkand not 50%!

When you do the eco-nomic evaluation, it is obvi-ous that Urirama will be aterribly expensive project fora meager 9% of renewableenergy!

And, now, the million dol-lar questions: why can’t wecome clean and tell the truthas it is? Why must we ignoreall the reputable reports andinvestigations made about thehealth hazards? Why can wenot decide to review the proj-ect again and make new eval-uations as to location forplacing it if we think it mustbe windmills and not moresolar parks? After all, if I un-derstand the government’s vi-sion, it is renewable energythey want, it is no more fossilfuel dependence...well itshould not matter whether

this energy comes from thewind or the sun as long as weget the renewable energy wewant!

And, if getting it fromwind mills at Urirama hasbeen proven to be a problem, well switch gears and get itfrom the sun! All the reportsindicate that sun energy ischeaper and cleaner and ispractically maintenance freeand much less cumbersometo erect.

What we need now aremen and women with back-bone and guts to make thatimportant call to put a halt tothis project and rethink thewhole matter. I know wehave such men and women inour Parliament, I am onlypraying that they will becourageous enough to step upto the plate and do the rightthing not the politically rightthing! Let’s do what is rightfor every citizen regardless ofpolitical affiliation or inclina-tion!

Direct your comments to:[email protected].

Urirama awaits thatimportant judgment call!

(AFP)--But his call for achange of tack and stifferwarnings from Washingtonwas rejected by Susan Rice, the US ambassador to theUnited Nations.

Rice maintained there was"no daylight" between USand Israel on preventing Iranfrom acquiring a nuclearweapon, but her commentson the timescale of Tehran'sambitions jarred with Ne-tanyahu's judgment.

"We think that there's stillconsiderable time for thispressure to work," Rice said, refusing to acknowledge thered lines argument and insist-ing that US sanctions wereworking.

"Their economy is begin-ning to buckle. Their oil pro-duction is down 40 percent.Their currency has plum-meted 40 percent in the lastyear."

But she added: "This isnot an infinite window, andwe've made very clear thatthe president's bottom line isIran will not have a nuclearweapon."

Israel has consistently saida nuclear-armed Iran wouldpose an existential threat tothe Jewish state and haswielded the threat of militaryaction, but the United Statesfavors sanctions and diplo-matic arm twisting.

Major Western powersagree with Israel that Tehranis using its civilian nuclearprogram as a cover for build-ing atomic weapons capabil-ity, a charge the Iranians haverepeatedly denied.

But with relations be-tween Netanyahu and Presi-dent Barack Obama viewedas frosty, US Defense Secre-tary Leon Panetta on Fridayfurther highlighted the policysplit.

"The fact is, look, presi-dents of the United States, prime ministers of Israel orany other country -- leadersof these countries don't have,

you know, a bunch of littlered lines that determine theirdecisions," Panetta said.

"What they have are factsthat are presented to themabout what a country is up to,and then they weigh whatkind of action is needed to betaken in order to deal withthat situation," he told For-eign Policy magazine.

"I mean, that's the realworld. Red lines are kind ofpolitical arguments that areused to try to put people in acorner."

The White House was lastweek forced to deny a reportthat Obama had refused tomeet Netanyahu in New Yorklater this month, and said thetwo spoke by telephone onTuesday and were united intheir stance toward Tehran.

And with Republicanpresidential nominee MittRomney accusing Obama ofbeing a poor friend to Israel,Netanyahu has denied that heis guilty of meddling in USpolitics ahead of elections on

November 6.Rice said in a separate in-

terview with "Fox News Sun-day" that US-Israeli relationswere "stronger than ever,"and insisted the only reasonNetanyahu and Obama wouldnot meet at the upcoming UNGeneral Assembly in NewYork was because theirschedules did not match.

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Thebodies of 17 men, most ofthem tied up in chains andshot dead, were founddumped along a highwaySunday in a western Mexicanstate that is a violent battle-ground for rival drug cartels.

Jalisco state prosecutorTomas Coronado quoted wit-

nesses as saying that peoplein trucks stopped along aroad, tossed the bodies outand sped off.

Coronado said the menmay have been killed in an-other state and left in Jalisco.

Jalisco borders on Mi-choacan, and both are amongthe states most ravaged bythe country's drug violence.

Some 60,000 people havedied in drug-related violencein Mexico since 2006, whenthe government ordered fed-eral troops to take on the car-tels.

The war between cartels ismainly over lucrative drugsmuggling routes to theUnited States, but also overcontrol of local crime rackets.

The violence seems re-lentless: on Friday 16 deadbodies were found in north-ern Mexico.

Nine of those dead werefound hanging from a bridgein the northern border city ofNuevo Laredo, a killing spreeauthorities blamed on druggang violence.

BEIRUT (AFP) - Hezbollahchief Hassan Nasrallah onSunday called for a week ofangry protests across Lebanonover a US-produced filmmocking Islam that triggereduproar in the Muslim world.

"The whole world needs tosee your anger on your faces,in your fists and your shouts,"Nasrallah said in a televisedspeech.

The head of the powerfulShiite Muslim organisationspoke just hours after PopeBenedict XVI left Lebanonfollowing a historic three-day

visit in which he prayed thatMiddle East leaders wouldwork towards peace and rec-onciliation.

Nasrallah noted that hepurposely postponed his callfor protests until after thepope's departure.

"The whole world shouldknow that the Prophet has fol-lowers who will not be silentin the face of humiliation,"said Nasrallah.

A low-budget movie, enti-tled "Innocence of Muslims",has sparked fury across the Is-lamic world for mocking the

Prophet Mohammed, and forportraying Muslims as im-moral and gratuitously violent.

Nasrallah called forprotests in southern Beirut onMonday, in the southern cityof Tyre on Wednesday, in theeastern city of Baalbek onFriday, in Bint Jbeil in southLebanon on Saturday, and inHermel in the eastern Bekaavalley region on Sunday. Allare majority Shiite areas.

He also called for peopleacross the Islamic world todemonstrate against the film, which he described as "the

worst attack ever on Islam, worse than the Satanic Versesby Salman Rushdie, the burn-ing of the Koran inAfghanistan and the cartoonsin the European media."

The United States onThursday imposed new sanc-tions on Nasrallah and twoother figures in the Shiite mili-tia over their support of SyrianPresident Bashar al-Assad.

The US Treasury moveadds to measures already leviedon Hezbollah, which was firstdesignated by Washington as aterrorist group in 2001.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -Top US and Libyan officialsoffered starkly different ac-counts Sunday about the at-tack on the US consulate inBenghazi that left the am-bassador and three otherAmericans dead.

The US ambassador tothe United Nations, SusanRice, said it began with aspontaneous protest overthe anti-Islamic video thathad already set off similarprotests in Egypt, leading tothe storming of the US em-bassy there.

"We don't see at this pointsigns this was a coordinatedplan, premeditated attack.Obviously, we will wait forthe results of the (FBI) in-vestigation and we don'twant to jump to conclusionsbefore then," Rice said

Announcing the arrest of50 suspects, Libya's parlia-ment chief, however, blamed the attack on a fewforeign extremists who hesaid entered Libya fromMali and Algeria and pre-planned it with local "affili-ates and sympathizers."

Al-Qaeda in the ArabianPeninsula claimed the at-tack was revenge for thekilling of the terror net-work's deputy leader SheikhAbu Yahya al-Libi in adrone strike in June, butthere is no clear evidence tosupport this claim.

US authorities initiallyleaned more toward the pre-meditated, well-planned as-sault angle, citing the factthat the attack came on theanniversary of 9/11.

Rice's comments are thestrongest indication yet that-- even if the United Statesdoes believe the assault wasthe work of a small band ofextremists -- it has no evi-dence to suggest planningprior to the protests.

But leading Republicansenator and top Obama ad-ministration critic, JohnMcCain, said it was ridicu-lous to believe this was any-thing other than a plannedassault by extremists.

"Most people don't bringrocket-propelled grenadesand heavy weapons to ademonstration," McCaintold CBS's "Fact the Na-tion."

"That was an act of ter-ror. And for anyone to dis-agree with that fundamentalfact I think is really ignoringthe facts."

Canada is the only G8country opposed to the list-ing. Last year, it joined Kaza-khstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraineand Vietnam in objecting tosuch a move.

Industry Minister Chris-tian Paradis said the policychange followed plans byQuebec's provincial premier-elect, Pauline Marois, to endproduction of the substancein Canada's only provinceproducing the fireproofing

WA S H I N G T O N ( A F P ) :Apple’s iPhone 5 is one of thebiggest product launches everin the sector, and may also de-liver a well-timed stimulus tothe US economy ahead of thepresidential election, analystssay.

Apple is expected to sell asmany as 10 million of the de-vices in just the first days ofthe launch starting Sept 21,and upwards of 50 million inthe fourth quarter, including abig chunk in the United States.

JP Morgan economistMichael Feroli said he sees theiPhone 5 adding between 0.25and 0.5 percentage points to

US economic activity in thefourth quarter, based on pro-jected US sales of eight mil-lion.

Feroli said it was a simplemath calculation: if the phonesare worth $600, including car-rier subsidies, minus $200 forimport costs, that would be$3.2 billion in net sales, or$12.8 billion at an annual rate, boosting gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) by 0.33 points.

Cary Leahey, chief USeconomist at Decision Eco-nomics, said the calculation“makes sense.”

NICOSIA (AFP) - Eurozoneleaders had a "good week"with a vital German court de-cision and Dutch electionsgoing their way, even ifbailouts for Greece and Spainremain up in the air.

On the back of a decisionby the European CentralBank to ease pressures onbond markets, finance minis-ters could tackle difficult is-sues including treatyobstacles to a banking union.

While recession and un-employment cast shadowsover debt crisis-fighting ef-forts on the streets in Madridand Lisbon, where marchersdemonstrated Saturday, andin Barcelona, where a millioncalled for Catalonia's inde-pendence earlier in the week,at the very top the feeling isone of breathing easier.

German Chancellor An-gela Merkel and Italian pre-mier Mario Monti hailedwhat they called "a goodweek for Europe and theeuro," Merkel's spokesmanSteffen Seibert said after thepair spoke by telephone onFriday.

The German Constitu-tional Court's green light forEurope's blocked bailout

fund was the main factor forthem, alongside a vote wonby Dutch Prime Minister andstaunch ally Mark Rutte, de-spite concessions to far-rightvoters.

European Central BankPresident Mario Draghi saidthings were falling into "theright place" after the an-nouncement of potentiallyunlimited buying of eurozonegovernment bonds on sell-onmarkets under bailout-likeconditions.

The Greek bailout, how-ever, will likely only becomeclearer come an October 18-19 summit of EU leaders inBrussels.

Greek Prime Minister An-tonis Samaras is close to win-ning a two-year extension tomeet fiscal pledges, and a liq-uidity boost from the ECB, inexchange for a new austeritypackage worth 11.7 billioneuros ($15 billion) to avoidleaving the eurozone.

"We are talking about anextension to 2016," he toldthe Wall Street Journal.

New figures are also duesoon from Spain on financingneeds at its banks, although ithas yet to be established howMadrid can avoid a full sov-

ereign bailout after the 100-billion-euro deal agreed inJune for loans to recapitaliseits banks.

Overall, markets have re-sponded positively, turningtheir focus elsewhere, althoughanalysts remain prudent.

The decisions by the ECB,the German court and Dutchvoters "have diminished therisk of short-term negativescenarios for the eurozone,"according to Amsterdam-based ING.

However, they have theirdoubts that the "good week"extends far below the surface.

Italy and France also sufferfrom a lack of competitiveness,Greek debt has not become anymore sustainable and all thedata suggests that the most suc-cessful European economieshave already been draggeddown by the turbulence in theeurozone periphery.

Harder-line Capital Eco-nomics of London saw "bol-stered hopes" of a "turningpoint", but sneered that "Sep-tember could yet prove to beanother false dawn," and heldto their longstanding line that"Greece's bail-out will prob-ably collapse, resulting in itleaving the eurozone."
