The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, January 15, 2018 MONETIZING ATSC 3.0 ADVANCED ADVERTISING SINCLAIR, IMAGINE IN COLLABORATION The new television broadcast standard, ATSC 3.0, is now in place. So the next question to be answered is how can broadcasters make use of it to deliver new services and generate new revenues? To that end, at CES in Las Vegas, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Imagine Communications announced a collaboration to accelerate the development of a new, next- generation advertising management software platform. It will be specifically designed to provide broadcasters with the ability to effectively exploit the potential of the new monetization opportunities of ATSC 3.0 digital television technology. The agreement allows Sinclair, the nation’s largest TV group in terms of stations, to play a critical role in the development of Imagine’s next-generation business process systems for traffic, ad sales and data analytics that allow for unit- and impression-based buys. Sinclair will provide oversight in the product development process. In addition, the broadcaster has committed to a rollout of beta testing for both ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 models. The company says that will help to “ensure that innovative solutions are applied to the new platform that accommodate the overall broadcast industry.” Both companies say they anticipate this collaboration will accelerate the adoption of ATSC 3.0 by giving broadcasters the advertising management tools that enable them to fully realize the sales opportunities afforded by a multiservice delivery model. The service delivery enhancements of ATSC 3.0, which include an IP-based backchannel— accompanied by the sophisticated monetization capabilities enabled through the Imagine-Sinclair collaboration—will help to boost the competitive standing and creativity of local broadcast groups, while offering viewers a highly personalized and interactive content experience. “Our development partnership with Imagine will ensure that we maximize the opportunities these new capabilities that an IP delivery model offers by utilizing business systems that provide precise targeting and geographical positioning across all distribution and consumption models,” said Del Parks, Sinclair’s chief technology officer. Both are controlled by the Redstone Family’s National Amusements and Shari Redstone—vice-chairwoman of both companies—is said to have shifted her back-and-forth view to reuniting again. CBS was split off from Viacom in 2005 in an attempt to maximize shareholder value. But the pending acquisition of much of 21 st Century Fox by Disney and other media mergers have reignited interest in bringing CBS and Viacom back together. CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves is the leading candidate to head a merged company, but Redstone is reported to be looking at other options as well. HOLIDAY SALES BEAT EXPECTATIONS We’d already heard that 2017 Holiday Shopping Season sales beat all forecasts. Now the National Retail Federation (NRF) has quantified the huge success. Holiday sales during November and December increased 5.5% over the same period in 2016 to $691.9 billion. NRF says growing wages, stronger employment and higher confidence led consumers to spend more than had been expected. The tally, which excludes restaurants, automobile dealers and gasoline stations, includes $138.4 billion in online and other non-store sales, which were up 11.5% over the year before. NRF had forecast a gain of 3.6-4.0%. The actual result from the latest holiday season was even greater than the 5.2% gain in 2010 at the end of the Great Recession. NRF’s numbers are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, which reported that overall December sales—including automobiles, gasoline and restaurants—were up 0.4% seasonally adjusted from November and 5.4% year-over-year. There were increases in every retail category except sporting goods during the holiday season, which NRF defines as November 1 through December 31. Building materials and supplies stores increased 8.1% unadjusted year-over-year. Furniture and home furnishings stores increased 7.5 and electronics/appliance stores gained 6.7%. SPORTS WINDFALL FOR NBC With both the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics next month, NBC Sports is raking in the advertising dollars. Executives told reporters the unit is on track to bring in more than $1.4 billion in ad sales for the two events. The record price for Super Bowl spots tends to be broken each year. FOX, which had the big game last year, got around $5 million per :30 and NBC is optimistic about the February 4 “Super Sunday” this year. Despite a dip in NFL ratings this season, NBC Sports EVP Dan Lovinger told reporters that the Super Bowl “almost transcends the season.” He said the average price is north of $5 million and fewer than 10 spots remain to be sold. Meanwhile, the Olympics in South Korea are on track to bring in $900 million, with ad prices up from the previous Winter Games in Sochi, Russia in 2014. The Winter Games begin February 9 (with some events a day earlier) and run through the closing ceremonies on February 25. NBC Olympics, a division of NBC Sports, will offer the most hours of coverage ever across NBC, multiple NBCUniversal cable networks and online.
