College Bowl Game Origins

• 1902: The East-West Football Game, sponsored by the Tournament of Roses, is held. Michigan 49 Stanford 0

• 1935: Orange Bowl (Miami), Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), and Sun Bowl (El Paso) are founded

• 1937-2011: Number of college football bowl games grows from three to thirty-five

• 1988: The USF&G Sugar Bowl becomes the first corporate sponsored bowl game

• 1998: College football positions The Bowl Championship Series as its postseason structure, based off an idea by SEC Commissioner, Roy Kramer

• The BCS is built around the six football power conferences: The SEC, The Big Ten, The Pac 10, the Big 12, the ACC, the Big East, as well as Notre Dame

• 2005: In the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Utah becomes first Non-AQ school to compete in a BCS game

• 2007: The first BCS National Championship Game is played as a separate game, between Florida and Ohio State

The BCS Playoffs- 3 Steps to a New System

• A total of six BCS bowl games are the result• The BCS National Championship Game remains in place

Step 1: Two current bowls are elevated to BCS level status

• Bowl games maintain their current locations, sponsor relationships, and television contracts

• Round positioning is rotational from year to year

Step 2: An eight team playoff is built from the six BCS bowl games

• First Round played in mid-December• Semi-Final Round played on New Year’s Day• BCS National Championship played on a Saturday night following soon after
