• He defeated rivals for leadership & became khan

population than the Romans did in four centuries• Khan forbade the kidnapping of women• He outlawed livestock rustling and established a winter-

only hunting season• He guaranteed freedom of religion, protecting the rights

of Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, and Hindus alike• The Great Khan also protected enemy envoys and

ambassadors, no matter what message they brought

Genghis Khan Dies

• Genghis Khan dies in 1227 & his son Ogadai takes power

• Ogadai captures the rest of northern China & extended the empire to Russia & Persia

• Divided the empire into 4 parts called khanates (ruled by Khan decedants)

• Kublai Khan (grandson) attacked the Song Empire in 1279
