locks.The starting pitchers will in-

clude veteran Jordan Zimmer-mann (who needs a bounce back season), Matthew Boyd, Tyson Ross, Matt Moore and Spencer Turnbull.

In the bullpen, Shane Greene (closer), Joe Jimenez (set-up), and Blaine Hardy are expected to lead the charge.

Victor Alcantara, Reed Gar-rett, Daniel Norris, Daniel Stumpf and Buck Farmer also will pitch in relief.

Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera leads the infield, play-ing first place and designated hitter. Newcomers from the Pittsburgh Pirates comprise the keystone combination at second base (Josh Harrison) and shortstop (Jordy Mercer). Jeimer Candelario is young third baseman. Niko Goodrum and Gordon Beckham are util-ity players.

Grayson Greiner and John Hicks are the catchers as James McCann was let go and rookie Jake Rogers requires more seasoning in Erie and/or Toledo. Hicks also sees action as a DH or at first base.

The Tigers outfield is led by veteran Nicholas Castellanos in right but the club would trade him if the right offer comes along as it’s the final year of his contract. Hotshot rookie Christian Stewart is in left field with Mikie Mahtook in center.

There was a spirited com-petition at the club’s sprawl-

ing Lakeland, Florida training complex. Youngsters were pushing veterans for attention and that’s a good thing. The club is stocked with plenty of young players at the Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A levels who are within a year or more of helping the major league club.

Avila and his staff have wise-ly dealt many of the team stars like Justin Verlander, J.D. Mar-tinez and David Price in hopes of landing youngsters who may be cornerstones for an-other run at greatness. With just two World Series appear-ances (both defeats) since the last World Championship in 1984, fans are longing for win-ning baseball again.

The team’s promotions calen-dar is crowded starting with a free Love Your Melon beanie on April 6 and continuing through a Print All Over Shirt on September 21. Trapper hats, carry-on bags, Cabrera picture frames, Detroit Stars replica jerseys, Sparky Ander-son bobbleheads, floppy hats, mini-bats, tote bags, koozies, coolers, a kid’s school lunch box and PAWS PJ pants are given away. Yet it’s the on-field product that deserves most of the attention.

Finally, the Tigers have a new Fox Sports Detroit crew with Matt Shepard teaming with either Kirk Gibson or Jack Morris, 1984 Champions. Dan Dickerson and Jim Price re-turn on WXYT-FM 97.1.

Opening Day! The mere thought of it beck-

ons a civic holiday atmosphere in downtown Detroit. Thurs-day, April 4 promises to be another celebration as the city welcomes home its beloved Detroit Tigers as they kick off their 20th season in Comerica Park.

From Openers to World Se-ries, from no-hitters to an All-Star Game, from jersey retirements to championship reunions, Comerica Park has been a fabric of Detroit sports accomplishments. “Bringing You Summer Since 1901” is the 2019 marketing theme.

The Tigers open their season with a four-game road series in Toronto against the Blue Jays in Rogers Centre. Then comes a series in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. Fans hope the team can do well in the road opening series before hosting the Kansas City Royals on April 4.

The team hopes to avoid an-other 98-loss season. No one wants to win more than the Il-itch family, club management, manager Ron Gardenhire and the roster of players. The De-troit District is a crown jewel of the organization and win-ning makes everyone – includ-ing loyal Tiger fans – happier and more likely to support a rebuilding franchise.

GM Al Avila and Gardenhire were yet to make their final roster cuts yet the vast major-ity of the key positions were

New Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center Call for ArtThe Detroit Pistons are seeking submissions from artists with Greater

Detroit ties to showcase their creative talents at the new Henry Ford De-troit Pistons Performance Center (rendering pictured). The brand new 100,000-square-foot facility, located just south of West Grand Boulevard and the train tracks from the New Center Amtrak station, will serve as the Pistons' practice home and corporate headquarters. The team is looking to source and acquire art and photography for the

new facility scheduled to open this fall. The organization seeks to create a one-of-a-kind, museum-quality art collection for the performance cen-ter that incorporates artwork created by local artists and embodies the spirit of Detroit.Local artists and muralists of all levels and experience are eligible to

submit existing work samples, which can explore a variety of themes, in-cluding, but not limited to, basketball, the history and culture of Detroit and Michigan, fan excitement and community activity.Mediums for submission include paintings (oil, acrylic, watercolor and

mixed media), sketches/drawings (pen and ink, charcoal and pastels), mixed media (found objects, digital, assemblage and collage), photogra-phy, sculptures, murals, digital art and graphic arts.To submit work for consideration, artists are asked to email a portfo-

lio of up to five JPEGs representative of their style, along with an artist statement and resume including contact information. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 22. Submissions should be sent to [email protected]. Email

attachments should not exceed 10 MB and only portfolios received via email will be considered.Upon selection, artists will be notified and commissioned for specific

works commencing this summer. All artists will be paid for their work in addition to promotion by the Detroit Pistons through traditional and social media. Submission finalists will be notified by Friday, May 10.

Women are making history every day in every area…..take a look around you; in the classroom, the boardroom, the pulpit, the operating room, in the courts, and everywhere imaginable. There are plenty of examples of our

growth in leadership positions in every area, but not nearly enough. Women still trail their male counter-

parts by a wide margin. Women still represent only 15% on Boards of Di-rectors of large corporations, and men still represent 83% of the senior Lead-ership Teams in corporate America. Perhaps, California’s new law that re-quires at least one woman on boards with headquarters in the state by 2019 and three on most corporate boards by 2021 would help to move the needle in Michigan. In a recent Free Press story entitled Michigan Women Lack Seats on Boards.

The columnist took a closer look at some of the tools that are being put in place to help solve the shortage. Denise Ilitch, CEO of Ilitch Enterprises and Chair-man of the board of Horizon Global Corp. comments, "The more diverse the board, the better it is for the company. All different skills and perspectives are important.” The story continued, Mark Davidoff, Michigan managing partner of Deloitte

has been concerned by the lack of women on corporate boards, and this is why he advocated for the Board Ready Women Program now in its second year in Detroit. The program’s steering committee members include: Leslie Murphy, president and CEO of Murphy Consulting Inc.; Nancy Schlichting, former CEO of Henry Ford Health System; Faye Nelson, Michigan Director, WK Kellogg Foun-dation (pictured), and Lisa Payne, former Vice President and CFO for Taubman Centers, Inc. The Board of Directors plays a very important role in the corporate structure

and should reflect the community the organization serves, and of course wom-en represent a huge percentage of the community. The board’s mandate is to establish policies for corporate management and oversight, and making deci-sions on major company issues. A corporate board of directors has the highest governing authority and is elected to protect shareholders' assets and ensure return on investment. Every public company must have a Board of Directors. According to the Chicago Tribune in a recent survey, Ambition and Gender at

Work by Europe’s Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) found almost three-quarters of women believed a “glass ceiling” exists barring them from senior roles. There are those that choose to ignore the glass ceiling theory. The numbers

are low for women moving up, but still haven’t stopped women that really want to move up the ladder. Jennifer Kluge, President and CEO of MichBusiness held the 23rd Annual Women’s Annual Business Conference, Women Thrive Conference last month says, “The Women’s Business Conference is still needed.” The event inducted five local business women into the MichBusiness Hall of

Fame; Teresa Lucido, Comcast Spotlight; Barbara McQuade, U of M; Juliette Okotie-Eboh, MGM Grand Detroit; and Ann Thomas, News/Talk760WJR.One panel featured five women honored with the Leadership in the Workplace

Award; Camille Walker Banks, Executive Director of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program at Wayne State University; Andrea Brimmer, Chief Marketing and Public Relations Officer, Ally Financial; The Rev. Faith Fowler, Executive Director, Cass Community Social Services; Michele Hodges, Presi-dent of the Belle Isle Conservancy; and Gretchen Perkins, partner in business development for Huron Capital. The good news is Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to learn more

about women in leadership positions.

This coming weekend, the William Davidson concerts of the DSO are featuring an exceptional program. It will be taking place at different places of our area, beginning on Thursday evening and ending on Sunday after-noon. In the program, conductor David Dan-zmayr and solo violinist Blake Pouliot will be per-forming Mendelssohn’s shiny and popular violin concerto in e minor.David Danzmayr is wide-

ly regarded as one of the most talented and excit-ing European conductors of his generation. He is Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Or-chestra, the first to hold this title in seven years. In addition, Danzmayr is Mu-sic Director of the ProMu-sica Chamber Orchestra, an orchestra comprised of musicians from all over the USA.Blake Pouliot, 24-year-

old Canadian violinist, is a charismatic and multifac-

eted performer who has garnered many accolades, such as becoming the 2016 Orchestre Sympho-nique de Montréal Manu-life Competition Grand Prize Winner. In addition to the Men-

delssohn violin concerto, the program includes Langsamer Satz (a slow movement in German), by Webern as arranged by Gerard Schwarz. Webern was the student of Ar-nold Schoenberg. Gerard Schwarz’ arrangement of Langsamer Satz is about fourteen minutes long. The main motif sounds highly descriptive and maintains one’s attention through the entire piece. A deep and intrinsic emo-tional experience is re-vealed. Another major work on

the program is Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 Unfin-ished, and a lighter and more popular piece - On the Beautiful Blue Dan-ube by Johann Strauss, Jr. For further information

on the times and places, check DSO.org.Engelbert Humperdinck’s

Hansel and Gretel (pic-tured) opera, based on the classic Grimm’s fairy tale, will be performed at the Detroit Opera House on Saturday, April 6, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 14, 2:30 p.m. The production, designed by master puppeteer Basil Twist, features larger-than-life puppetry cre-ated with the Jim Henson Company. MOT will offer a special family day for the April 14 performance featuring complimentary children’s activities. The opera tells the story

of Hansel and Gretel, a brother and sister from a poverty-stricken family who must fend for them-selves in the woods. Af-ter losing their way, the starving children encoun-ter a magical gingerbread house, which they begin to eat, only to find them-selves caught by a witch who intends to eat them. “Hansel and Gretel is a

tale as old as time, but this production is unlike any-thing you’ve seen before,” said MOT Principal Con-ductor Stephen Lord. “The puppets add a level of magic and fantasy to the opera that is sure to wow children and adults alike. The music is unique with folk-inspired elements. Humperdinck called it a fairy tale opera and like a fairy tale, the music echoes the oral tradition of a story passed-down through the ages, with fa-miliar tunes and words so all generations can relate to them.”

Except for Hansel and Gretel themselves, nearly everything on stage is made through puppetry or augmented costume, including the 15-foot witch. It also features a larger-than-life mother and father and 14 flying angel marionettes oper-ated by puppeteers from high above the stage. The opera features Em-

ily Fons and Deanna Brei-wick as Hansel and Gretel, respectively, and Mat-thew DiBattista as the witch. The production is conducted by Lord and di-rected by Twist. It is sung in German with English supertitles. MOT will of-fer a free opera talk one hour before the perfor-mance. For information, see MichiganOpera.org.

BINGE-WORTHY T V

F o r e i g n I n t r i g u e o n A m a z o n P r i m eA Review by Paul Arlon

Next to Google, the biggest play-er on the web is Amazon. Search Google for information, search Amazon for stuff. While Netflix has become the first name in vid-eo streaming, this year throwing a whopping industry-high $18.6 billion into original program-ming, Amazon Prime is still right up there for new content produc-tion.

Starting late last summer, Prime took a deep dive into the world of foreign intrigue, offering three such series featuring spycraft, subterfuge and cloak and dagger hanky-panky.

First off their launchpad was the latest incarnation of Tom Clan-cy’s character, Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski (pictured). In this version, Ryan is still a lowly CIA analyst, who uncovers a terror-ist cell by doggedly deciphering some obscure financial transac-tions. He's soon vaulted from his comfy office chair into the world of black op field work.

Ranging in locales from Wash-ington, D.C. to Paris to the Turk-ish badlands and back again, I'm impressed by how good this series turned out. Its 2nd season hits this summer.

Next in the same vein of visit-ing exotic lands and unraveling their many knots of mystery, we got The Widow, starring the for-merly fresh-faced Kate Beckin-sale. I say formerly for this reason – not that long ago, Beckinsale’s dewy countenance was the high-light of her screen presence but in The Widow (pictured), her looks are wind whipped and sunburnt reddish-brown. So much so that it barely looks like

her. As for the story, this new envisioning of a weathered and well-armed Beckinsale has her thrashing about in the jungles of sub-Saharan Africa as she fends off Congolese warlords, devious frenemies, psychologically dam-aged child soldiers, and finally, cowardly men, to extract the truth about her husband’s dubi-ous death in a plane crash.

Not that original a story, set-ting, or character and worst of all, not really fun to watch. In fact, it’s strongly dissuasive if you've ever thought about traveling to inner Africa and that’s hardly a worthwhile benefit to glean from watching the whole series.

Now, I’m trying to wade through Amazon’s similarly structured, White Dragon, starring John Simm (pictured) as Jonah, a British college professor whose wife lives part of the year with him in England, and the rest of her year in Singapore. When his wife dies in a car accident while at her second home in Singapore, Jonah travels there to claim her body. And, learns of her double life when he meets her other hus-band, a former high-ranking po-liceman, and her 20-something political activist daughter.

Great scenery with a choppy story and tepid acting. Pretty much the same story as The Wid-ow, with different wallpaper. I’m not finished watching this series, but, unless it starts cementing my attention, I may well jump out of this stream.
