Hebrew People & Tradition - Abraham: Father of the
Hebrew People- Made a covenant (sacred
agreement) with Yahweh
- Yahweh gave protection, the Hebrews gave obedience
- Also, Abraham would be “father of many nations”
Hebrews in Egypt- Located between Nile
Delta and Sinai Peninsula
- Maybe slaves, maybe a buffer state
- Tradition says Moses led Hebrews out of Egypt into “promised land”
- During journey, Hebrew law (10 Commandments) and monotheism solidified
Kingdoms of Israel and Judah- 1026 BCE, Hebrews
establish kingdom on Eastern Mediterranean coast
- 920 BCE, splits into two kingdoms
Diaspora - to disperse/spread out
- Northern Kingdom of Israel Conquered by Assyria, 720 BCE
- Many Hebrews deported to Babylon
- Cultural Diffusion: bring monotheism with them (Zoroastrianism)
Judaism - Hebrew Religion- During this time, the
Torah (Hebrew/Jewish holy book) finalized
- Jewish faith becomes solidified
