Jeff Alworth at Beervana has an update from his network of Oregon

No great surprises here, but it is worth noting that the fastest growing categories are lagers!

How many of the top 20 beers on the wish list have you had....?!

The Morning Advertiser has an interesting article bemoaning the

lack of any specific Government support for the UK Night Club

    hospitality in general.

    https://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Article/2020/11/10/Covid-19-impact-on-night-clubs

A particularly alarming point in the article states "...Europe's largest late-night operator, the Deltec

Group, has launched an "accelerated merger and acquisition process" in a bid to secure the company's

    long-term future."

We are very fearful that the Macros will be circling in the coming months, looking for opportunities to

acquire over-leveraged UK craft brewers at pennies on the pound, once they have run out of cash.

Finally, here is a thought-provoking blog post about the oddly British

tradition of ordering drinks in bars and pubs without having any clue

Petition Southwark Council to pedestrianise the Bermondsey Beer Mile on a Saturday.

With pedestrianisation of some of the busiest streets in Bermondsey on Saturdays only, we can get the

many bars and restaurants back up to their previous operating levels whilst keeping customers safe

  • Reverse the change to Small Brewers Relief

The Treasury has announced changes to Small Brewers Relief (SBR) – the progressive tax system that has revolutionised UK brewing. These changes will reduce the 50% duty threshold from 5,000hl to

2,100hl: small breweries will have to pay more duty, whilst larger breweries could pay the same or less.

  • WHO OWNS WHO…?

This Week in Craft Beer is dedicated to supporting and promoting Independent UK Craft Breweries and

    the ecosystem surrounding them.

We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro

brewery. A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.

Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in

some shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of

investment. In our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is

    not a macro brewery.

    Why does this matter?

Having a Macro as a parent company (even a minority shareholder), gives the brewery huge advantages of patronage, including access to cheaper or scarce ingredients, access to distribution networks, access

to points of sale including draft taps and pub fridges etc. For example, in 2017 ABInbev bought the

entire South African hop market for its own use and denied access to all independent breweries.
