GB Assembly Instructions

Handling the equipment■ Before using the equipment for exercise, check carefully to en-

sure that it has been correctly assembled.■ It is not recommended to use or store the apparatus in a damp

room as this may cause it to rust. Please ensure that no part ofthe machine comes in contact with liquids (drinks, perspirationetc.). This may cause corrosion.

■ The machine is designed for use by adults and children shouldnot be allowed to play with it. Children at play behave unpre-dictably and dangerous situations may occur for which the ma-nufacturer cannot be held liable. If, in spite of this, children areallowed to use the equipment, ensure that they are instructed inits proper use and supervised accordingly.

■ This Rowing machine is an exercise machine that works de-pendent from stroke sequence (speed).

■ A slight production of noise at the bearing of the centrifugalmass is due to the construction and has no negative effect uponoperation. Possibly occurring noise during reverse pedalling re-sult from engineering and are absolutely safe.

■ The training device has a hydraulic brake system.■ To operate correctly, the pulse function requires a minimum vol-

tage of 2,7 volts (only for computers working with batteries).■ Before beginning your first training session, familiarize yourself

thoroughly with all the functions and settings of the unit.■ When training intensivly shock absorbers may become very

hot. Please avoid contact and do not touch the shock absorbers

after training.

Care and maintenance■ Damaged components may endanger your safety or reduce the

lifetime of the equipment. For this reason, worn or damagedparts should be replaced immediately and the equipment takenout of use until this has been done. Use only original KETTLERspare parts.

■ To ensure that the safety level is kept to the highest possiblestandard, determined by its construction, this product shouldbe serviced regulary (once a year) by specialist retailers.

■ Use for your regular cleaning, maintenance and care our ap-pliance maintenance set (Article no. 07921-000) specificallylicensed for KETTLER Sports apparatus and available from theSport specialized trade.

■ Please ensure that liquids or perspiration never enter the ma-chine or the electronics.

■ A few drops of viscous oil should be applied to the bearing slee-ves of the hydraulic absorbers and the rowing levers. Careshould be taken that the oil does not drip onto the floor!

■ After a longer period of disuse, the hydraulic absorbers maynot achieve their best performance at once. Before beginningexercising or after a period of disuse, it is recommended to ac-tivate the absorbers by several pumping movements.

– GB – Insert the hexagon bolts M8 x 50 mm (short thread) and securethem with washers and gold-coloured safety nuts. The safety nutsmay seem stiff. This is not a defect, but is intended to secure themagainst unintentional loosening.

– D – Zur Veränderung der Ruderkraft lassen sich die Klemmstücke nachLockern der Sterngriffmuttern auf den Ruderarmen verschieben.Die Rändelmarken (siehe Dreieckspfeil) auf den Ruderarmen die-nen dabei zur Einstellung gleicher Hebelverhältnisse. Vor Betäti-gung der Ruderarme unbedingt Sterngriffmutter festziehen.Geringe Ruderkraft bei Stellung der Klemmstücke auf der unter-sten Rändelmarke, Maximalkraft in oberster Stellung.

– GB – In order to alter the power setting (rowing resistance), the clampscan be loosened and moved up or down the rowing arms/“oars“.The knurled markers (see triangular arrow) make it possible to setboth clamps at the same level. Before using the rowing machine,make sure that the knurled knops are absolutly tight.Clamps at lowest knurled marker=lowest power levelClamps at highest knurled marker=highest power level

– F – Pour modifier la dureté de l’effort changer le positionnement descolliers de serrage après avoir desserré les écrout à poignée sur lesbras. Les marques à crans (cf. flèche triangulare), qui au régöassetrouvent sur les bras du rameur, servent au réglage de la mêmeduretéde l’effort. Avant d’actionner les bras du rameur, serventau réglage de la même dureté de l’effort. Avant d’actionner lesbras du rameur, serrer les écrous à poignéé. L’effort est le moins dur quand les colliers se trouvent sur les mar-ques du dessous es il est maximal quand il se trouvent sur les mar-ques du dessus.

Lezigrinature (vedi freccia a triangolo) sui remi servono a regolaregli stessi rapporti di leva. Prima di azionare i remi dovete assolu-tamente stringere le manopole a crociera. Posizionando i pezzi di attacco sulla zigrinatura inferiore, serviràuna forza di remata minima, la forza necessaria sarà massimaposizionandoli sulla zigrinatura superiore.

– PL – W celu zmiany siły wiosłowania po poluzowaniu nakrętek gwi-azdowych należy przesunąć elementy zaciskowe na wiosłach.Znaki na wiosłach (patrz trójkątna strzałka) służą do nastawie-nia jednakowej dźwigni. Przed wiosłowaniem należy konieczniesilnie dokręcić nakrętkę gwiazdową.Mała siła wiosłowania przy ustawieniu elementów zaciskowych

przy najniższym znaku, siła maksymalna przy położeniunajwyższym.

– CZ – Pro změnu veslovací síly lze po uvolnění matek s rukojetí posu-nout upínáky na veslovacích ramenech. Zářezy (viz trojúhelníkovášipka) na ramenech vesel přitom slouží pro nastavení stejnýchzdvihových poměrů. Před použitím veslovacích ramen je bezpod-mínečně nutné dotáhnout matky s rukojetí.Malá veslovací síla je dosažena při nastavení upínáků nanejspodnější zářez, maximální síly se dosáhne v nejvyšší poloze.

terien durch zwei neue vom Typ AA 1,5V.■ Achten Sie beim Einsatz der Batterien auf die Kennzeichnung im

Batteriefachboden.■ Sollte es nach dem Wiedereinschalten zu Fehlfunktionen kom-

men, klemmen Sie die Batterien noch einmal kurz ab und wie-der an.

Wichtig: Aufgebrauchte Batterien fallen nicht unter die Garantie -bestim mun gen.

Entsorgung von gebrauchten Batterien und Akkus.Dieses Symbol weist darauf hin, dass Batterien und Akkusnicht mit dem normalen Hausmüll entsorgt werden dür-fen.Die Buchstaben Hg (Quecksilber) und Pb (Blei) unter der

7978-900 Favorit - Further Steps to Setting Tension ***The Favorit Rower resistance varies by the amount of leverage the user has

which depends on the positioning of the clamps on the chrome rower arms. You will

notice numerous little ridges called "knurl marks" on the lower half of the chrome

rower arms. These knurl marks are in groups of ten with a wider gap between each

set of ten ridges. There are a total of fifty knurl marks on each arm which help you

to set both left and right side at the same position such that the amount of

resistance is equal on both sides.***

***When the clamp is positioned near the lower knurl marks (near the pivot

point), the user has more leverage and thus the resistance is less and it is easier to

row. When the clamp is moved to the higher knurl marks, the user has less

leverage and it is harder to row.***

Step 1

Sometimes the accordion boot will slide up the rowing arm, therefore make

sure the accordion boot is pushed all the way down so it is covering the

pivoting joint. Picture “A” shows the boot incorrectly positioned, having slid up

the rowing arm.

Step 2

If the accordion boot needs to be adjusted, lift the rower arm up and then firmly

press the accordion boot downward covering the pivot joint completely. Picture “B”

shows the boot correctly positioned.

Step 3

Resistance Adjustment Example - Picture “C” shows the clamp positioned ¾ of the

way up on the fifty knurl marks, 13 knurl marks above the clamp can be

seen. There is a group of ten knurl marks, then a wider gap and then three more

knurl marks above the clamp. The arrow shows the clamp positioned at level 37 of

50.

Step 4

To adjust resistance, it is best & easiest to first pull the rower arm back to a 90˚

angle. Loosen the clamp, then slide the clamp to the desired resistance level and

retighten, picture “D”. Mirror this step for the other rower arm, making sure the knurl

marks are set at the same resistance level.

Step 5

There are five sets of ten knurl marks each with a wider gap between then next set

of ten. The arrow in picture “E” is pointing at the 1st knurl mark. The clamp is below

all 50 knurl marks and thus at the lowest level of resistance. Note: At this position,

the resistance level amount is less than 10lbs.

Step 6

In picture “F” the arrow is pointing to the 50th knurl mark which is in the highest set

of ten knurl marks. If the clamp is positioned in this set of knurls, then the

resistance is very difficult.

It is recommended that you first try positioning the clamp the lower knurl marks,

between 1 – 10, and then if you wish for more resistance, adjust to higher knurl

marks.

Remember to first point the rower arm vertically before loosening the clamp for

easiest repositioning. It is very difficult to reposition the clamp when the rower arm

is lying down horizontally.

This training computer offers two possibilities of pulse measuring:1. with the ear-clip2. with the Cardio Pulse Set (available as accessory from specia-

lised dealers)

Pulse measuring with the ear-clipPlug the ear-clip into the socket.Rub one ear lob in order to achieve a better blood circulation.Put the ear-clip at your ear lob.

Pulse displayThe heart symbol (17) will flash according to your pulse beat.The pulse beat is displayed as value (18).

Start training. All values will count upwards.

The right training pulse [Aerobic zone]The training pulse depends on your age. There is the "right" so-called aerobic training range for every age (rule of thumb: 180minus life age) which is marked by an upper and a lower pulse li-mit (+/- 10 beats). Your training pulse should always be within theaerobic zone. The maximum pulse frequency (200 minus life age)should not be exceeded. Healthy persons may orient themselvesby the following diagram.

If you press longer on the +/– button, there will be a fast forwardor return motion of the preset values.If you press the +/– buttons together, the value will return to zero. With the Set button you will get to the next preset values. After setting the pulse value you will stay in the standby mode withthe Set button, however, with all preset values being displayed(Fig. 12).If you press the Set button longer, the display will skip to the com-plete display (reset function) (Fig. 2).

To be notedIf you do not enter any preset values within 4 minutes, the displaywill skip to room temperature (Fig. 1).

FunctionStart rowing. All preset values (except pulse limit) will count down,then flash for a few seconds when reaching zero and afterwardscount upwards from the preset value.If your pulse beat exceeds the preset pulse limit, the pulse valuewill flash and a bleep will sound as a warning.

If you start training, an automatic display change SCAN (symbol2 in the display) will take place in a 5-second cycle. With the Setbutton you can switch it off. With the +/– button you then can skipone display range forward or backward. If you activated the stro-ke frequency preset mark (12) in the display, there will be a beepin accordance with the stroke cycle, in order to assist you to main-tain the stroke frequency.If you press the +/– buttons together, you switch off the acousticstroke frequency signal and the mark (12) will no longer be dis-played. This is also possible with a training interruption.

To be notedIf a preset value (except the pulse limit and stroke frequency) is re-ached, it will immediately be accepted in the large display (9).

If you interrupt rowing, the electronic system will recognise an in-terruption of training. The automatic display change will stop, theSCAN symbol disappears, P will be displayed and the current ran-ge remains standing still in the large display. If you do not conti-nue training within 4 minutes, the display will change to roomtemperature (Fig. 1). In this case, the distance is added to the to-tal kilometres covered. All other values will not be stored.

To be notedWith the +/– button you can skip one display range forward orbackward. With the Set button you get back into the input mode. In this case,all previous training data and preset values are deleted.

Start training again. The values will count on.

The training computer is equipped with a recovery pulse functionthat enables you to measure your recovery pulse at the end ofyour training. At the end of your training press the recovery pulsebutton. The computer will count down for 60 seconds and mea-sure your pulse (Fig. 13). Afterwards, a fitness value with ( F ) isdisplayed (Fig. 14) the calculation of which is explained in 9.0General. If pulse measuring is interrupted, ( P ) and an error mes-sage ( E ) is displayed instead of a value (Fig. 15). If you pressthe recovery button, the current training display will appearagain.

Calculation of total kilometres covered1 rowing stroke results in a distance of 5 m.

Kilojoule calculation From the view of sports physicians there is the following energyconsumption during rowing: 1 hour of rowing with a stroke fre-quency of 40 strokes per minute will consume 2930 kJ.1 kilometre results in 244 Kilojoule.The calculation is based on a medium strain level and is onlychanged by means of a variation of the stroke frequency.

Fitness value calculation The computer calculates and assesses the difference betweenstrain pulse and recovery pulse and your resulting "fitness value"on the basis of the following formula:

The fitness value is a va-lue of orientation with regard to your recoverability after physicalstrain. Before you press the recovery pulse button and have thecomputer calculate your fitness value you should have trained inyour strain range for a longer period of time, this means for atleast 10 minutes. With a regular cardiovascular training you willnotice that your "fitness value" will improve.

Information on pulse measuringPulse measuring starts when the heart in the display flashes ac-cording to the beat of your pulse.

With ear-clipThe pulse sensor operates with infra-red light and measures thechanges in the light permeability of your skin which are causedby your pulse beat. Before you fasten the ear-clip to your ear lobplease rub it strongly 10 times, in order to increase blood circu-lation.

Avoid interfering impulses.• Fasten the ear-clip carefully at your ear lob and try to find the

most favourable point for sensoring (heart symbol flashes with-out interruption).

As can be seen in the illustration, rowing activates the upper andlower body to the same extent. In the legs, rowing exercises theextensors (1), the flexors (2) and the shin and calf muscles (5, 4).The movement of the hips also calls on the seat (gluteus) muscles(3).In the torso region, rowing calls primarily upon the latissimus (6)and the erectors (8), but also on the trapezius (7), the deltoid (9)and the arm extensor muscles (10).

Planning and controlling your rowingThe basis for planning your course of exercise should be your ac-tual state of fitness. Your family doctor can put you through an en-durance test to determine your physical performance. The resultsof the test should be used to plan your exercise programme. If you do not go throughan endurance test, you should avoid excessive exercising stressesat all costs. The following principle should be follow in your plan-ning; endurance training can be controlled as much by the extentof effort as by the level of effort and the intensity.

Exercise intensityThe effort intensity when rowing can be determined by checkingthe pulse. The maximum pulse rate per minute is equivalent to apulse of 200 minus age. This rate should, however, never be ex-ceeded during exercise. The optimum rate is given by the rule ofthumb of:

This means that a 50-year-old person should arrange his/her en-durance exercising around a pulse at 130. Such a calculation isconsidered very favourable by numerous experts. The intensity ofthe rowing exercises can be varied on the one hand by alteringthe number of strokes per minute, and on the other by altering theresistance of the “oars”.You can adjust 12 steps of rowing resi-stance at the adjusting rings of the oil pressure damping cylinders.As a beginner, on principle select a low intensity, i.e. the strokefrequency should be below 20 strokes per minute and the dam-ping cylinders' resistance should be adjusted at the lowest step.Beginners should therefore avoid exercising at high stroke rates orat high resistance levels. The optimum stroke rate and level of re-sistance should be determined using the recommended pulse rate,

• Do not train directly under strong incidence of light, e.g. neonlight, halogen light, spot light, sunlight.

• Completely avoid any vibrations and wobbling of the ear sen-sor including cable. Always fasten the cable with the clip atyour clothes or - even better - at a headband.

With cardio pulse setPlease refer to the appropriate instructions.

Failures in the pulse display Should there once be any problems with pulse detection, pleaseonce again check the above mentioned points. Check the battery voltage.

Failures in the training computerRecord the kilometres covered. In case of a strange behaviour ofthe training computer remove the batteries, check the battery vol-tage and insert the batteries again. The stored total value of kilo-metres covered will get lost during an exchange of batteries.

The rowing machine provides all of the advantages of “real life”rowing without the trouble or expense of “taking to the water”.The particular boom design of the rowing machine permits a cir-cular rowing movement coming very close to real rowing on wa-ter. Rowing is a sport that improves not only the performance ofthe cardio-vascular system, but also improves stamina and endu-rance. The following points should be observed before commen-cing a course of training:

ImportantBefore commencing a course of training, have your family doctorcheck that you are fit enough to exercise with the rowing machi-ne. The result of the medical check-up should be used as a basisfor planning the exercise programme. The following directions areonly to be recommended to healthy persons.

The advantages of rowingAs mentioned above, rowing is an excellent way to increase theefficiency of the cardio-vascular system. It also improves the abili-ty to absorb oxygen. In addition, rowing is also suitable for “bur-ning off” fat by calling up the fat reserves (in the form of fattyacids) to be transformed into energy.Another important advantage of rowing lies in the strengtheningof all of the body’s important muscle groups, whereby the strengt-hening of the back and shoulder muscles can be considered es-pecially beneficial from the orthopaedic point of view. The strengt-hening of the back muscles can help prevent such orthopaedicproblems as are encountered all too often nowadays. Exercisingwith the rowing machine is therefore a comprehensive way toexercise. It improves endurance and strength while at the sametime not putting the joints under stress.

Which muscles are called onThe movements in the rowing exercise call on all of the body’s mu-sclegroups. Although some are concentrated upon more than

which should be checked three times during each session. Beforestarting, check the resting pulse, about 10 minutes into the sessi-on check the effort pulse (which should be in the region of the re-commended level), and after finishing exercising, check the reco-very pulse.These three values can be entered into the record sheet. Regularexercising will soon show a reduction in both the rest and the ef-fort pulse rates. This can be taken as a sign for the positive effec-ts of the endurance training. The heart is beating more slowly andmore time is available for the heart to take in blood and for theblood to circulate through the heart’s own muscles.

Extent of exerciseBy extent of exercise, we refer to the length of the exercise sessi-ons and their frequency per week. Experts consider the followingextent of exercise to be especially effective:

Exercise sessions of 20-30minutes/30-60 minutes are not suitablefor the beginner. The beginner should increase his/her extent ofexercising only gradually, with the first blocks being kept relati-vely short. Block exercising can be looked upon as a good varia-tion at the beginning.A typical beginner’s programme for the first 4 weeks could be so-mething like the following:

Following these 4 weeks of beginner’s exercising, the blocks canbe extended to 10 minutes of continuous rowing without a break.If 3 weekly sessions of 20-30 minutes are preferred (at later sta-ges), a free day should be planned between each two days withexercise.

Accompanying gymnastic exercisesGymnastik exercises are an ideal complement to rowing. Alwaysdo warming-up exercises before starting rowing. Activate the cir-culation with a few minutes of easy rowing (10-15 strokes per mi-nute). Stretching exercises should then be carried out before thereal rowing exercise is started.Easy rowing should also be done at the end of the session, withfurther stretching exercises during the cooling-down period.
