On the Wild Side of the fence

Ngwenya Lodge is situated on the southern boundary of one of the biggest and best known wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the Kruger National Park. At Ngwenya Lodge you can literally reach out and touch the Kruger National Park because the property is situated on banks of the Crocodile River overlooking the game reserve from the wild side of the fence.

Ngwenya Lodge enjoys 2 kilometres of prime river frontage a mere ten minutes upstream from Crocodile Bridge Gate. The electrified game fence of the Kruger National Park passes behind Ngwenya. This effectively incorporates the property into the game area which means that you have every opportunity to see all the same species (Big Five included) that occur in the game-rich south eastern section of the Kruger Park without having to leave the property.

HOLIDAY EXPERIENCEHOLIDAY EXPERIENCE

Ngwenya's unique setting on the edge of a major perennial river that forms the southern boundary of the world famous Kruger National Park provides an unbeatable setting for viewing the Big Five without even having to leave the property. Animals come to the river to drink and, in the case of the big cats, hunt.

Crocodile River : As it passes Ngwenya, the Crocodile River is characterised by a vast open floodplain on the Kruger Park side and an extensive reed bed on the Ngwenya Lodge side. The reed bed serves to attract elephant, buffalo, hippo and waterbuck and it’s not uncommon to encounter these animals in close proximity to river front chalets and hides.

Mozambique tilapia (kurper) are common in the Crocodile River and dams at Ngwenya.

The Crocodile River as a whole boasts the richest diversity of fish species of any river system in South Africa and the Lower Crocodile, which forms the southern border of the Kruger Park, is inhabited by more than 30 species including the mighty tiger fish.

Vegetation: Four Kruger Park ecozones converge on the area surrounding Ngwenya Lodge making it the ideal setting to wise up to the trees most likely to be encountered when travelling through the south eastern section of the Kruger Park. Dominant trees include the Leadwood, various Bushwillow spp, Knob-thorn, Buffalo thorn, Tamboti, Weeping Boer-bean, Marula, Apple-leaf, Jackal-berry, Fever tree and other Acacia species.

Wildlife: Places of water are places of life. For this reason a wide diversity of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians live in and around the reverie habitat at Ngwenya Lodge and this is what makes the setting so appealing.

Lion are seen quite frequently

Mammals: The following species of large game have been recorded at Ngwenya: Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild dog, Hyena, Elephant, Rhino, Hippo, Buffalo, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Zebra, Kudu, Waterbuck, Impala, Bushbuck, Warthog, Baboon and Vervet Monkey. Each year a number of kills are seen from the Lodge. In addition to the large mammals, a wide diversity of small mammals have also been recorded.

Reptiles: The most commonly seen reptiles include the Nile Crocodile, Nile Monitor, Giant Plated Lizard, Rainbow Skink, Bibron’s Gecko and the African Rock Python

Frogs: Of the 34 species expected to occur at Ngwenya, 15 species have been recorded with the most commonly seen being the Foam Nest Frog, Painted Reed Frog, Guttural Toad and the Olive Toad.

Birds: Birding is superb with over 300 species of birds having been recorded at Ngwenya.

Unfortunately most people have an inherent fear of reptiles - snakes in particular - and many prefer to see them dead than alive. This lack of appreciation and fear is a reflection of ignorance, misconception and myth to echo the words of the reputed South African Herpetologist, Bill Branch. There is no reason why reptiles cannot be enjoyed in the field as much as birds or mammals, after all they are an integral part of the ecosystem! Snakes, although common, are hardly ever encountered. This is because they are well camouflaged, timid and elusive creatures which avoid confrontation with humans. Of the 130 species of snakes in Southern Africa only 14 species have been recorded as having caused human death. To put the threat of snakes into perspective it should be realized that the chance of dying from a snakebite is extremely small. In South Africa there is only one reported death from snakebite every 2 to 3 years while every year in excess of 200 people are killed in road accidents over the Easter weekend alone. Snakes need to be respected rather than feared. They perform a valuable ecological role and need to be conserved. They must definitely not be interfered with, teased, injured or killed.

Black mamba - the most dangerous snake found at NgwenyaIn the unlikely event that you happen to encounter a snake at close quarters try not to panic, scream, jump or make any other rapid movements - simply keep still and the snake will invariably go on its way. While crocodiles and terrapins are common in the river and are frequently seen, lizards are the most obvious group of reptiles at Ngwenya and can be seen almost everywhere. For this reason examples of those most likely to be seen are given here.

Female rainbow skinkThe most common species of lizard at Ngwenya is the Five-lined or Rainbow Skink. These tame colourful lizards can be seen almost everywhere as they hunt insects or bask in the sun on the verandas and paved walkways. Juveniles and females have blue tails and obvious cream coloured body stripes while the males have orange tails and less obvious body stripes.

Nile monitorThese lizards are frequently encountered in the vicinity of the dam or may be seen basking on clumps of dead reeds along the edge of the river. The Nile Monitor is one of the major predators of crocodile eggs.

They will not attack humans unless provoked. Once provoked, however, the Nile Monitor is a formidable fighter and will not hesitate to defend itself.

The evergreen reverie habitat of Ngwenya provides an excellent setting from which to enjoy great year round game viewing and birding. The Lodge overlooks a scenic floodplain which allows for uninterrupted views of animals as they come to the river to drink. This unique situation sells itself.

Perched high above the Crocodile River is Ngwenya's main thatched complex with its elevated viewing deck and panoramic view of the Kruger National Park floodplain and adjoining woodland. From this vantage point one can view animal- and bird-life in the reverie environment.
