Field Trip Reflection of Grade 5
In our theme ‘Sharing the Planet’, students of Grade 5 inquired about the rights of children, the risks and challenges children face around the world, and opportunities that are to them. In relation to this unit, we went to an NGO that deals with children who are physically challenged. ‘The Bombay Institution of Deaf and Mute’ teach these children how to read, write, and communicate with people around them. The students explored how these children overcome their challenges and weaknesses and turn them into strength. Our students also interacted with them in sign language and played with them. Our students empathized with them and donated food items and stationery to the organization. It was really an eye opening experience for Grade 5 students.

Pre Primary celebrates GRANDPARENTS’ DAY
O n 13th September 2016, the Pre Primary section celebrated Grandparents’ Day
in their homerooms. The objective of the celebration was to show grandparents how much
their grandchildren love and respect them. The preparations started weeks in advance, with teachers and
students teaming up to decorate the classrooms and making gifts for take away. Each and every student
actively participated in presentations like singing, dancing, drawing and painting.
Grandparents were welcomed with vibrant classrooms and happy smiles. They played games like Ribbon the ball,
Rim the coin, Passing the parcel, Riddles etc. Each class had planned their own activities to ensure variety and
creativity. Some teachers had made videos of students and grandparents and everyone watched it with great
enthusiasm. On the whole, the day was fun filled and the grandparents enjoyed every bit of it. It indeed
strengthened the very vital bond between the two generations!!

“What children need the most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance. They give
unconditional love, kindness, patience, humour, comfort, and lessons in life.”
- Rudy Giuliani
To honour the bonding of grandparents with their grandchildren, we at RBKIA celebrated Grandparents day on
13th September 2016. The response was overwhelming and heart-warming. Grandparents were very happy to
talk about their experiences and interactions with their grandchildren. They participated wholeheartedly in all
the games and activities planned by the homeroom teachers. They sang songs and had a bit of jiggle too. The
event culminated with light refreshment. All in all it was a pleasant and enriching experience for all.

Meeting with officials from PAWS
T he students of Grade 3 met with officials from the Plant and Animal
Welfare Society, PAWS, Kalyan. The objective of the meeting was to learn more about
animal rescue and safety operations. This was in line with their inquiry into the current UOI - Natural
Habitats, primarily focusing on our rights and responsibilities while interacting with nature. The team
from PAWS included CEO, Mr. Nilesh Banage, Co-founder Ms. Anuradha and a volunteer Ms. Nisha. They
initially quizzed the students about how they interact with and respond to stray animals in their localities.
Students enthusiastically shared their personal experiences and also clarified their doubts.
After that, the team briefed them about different services offered by PAWS, such as the rescue of wild
animals, different treatments for injured animals, and vaccination campaigns. They explained the entire
process and shared recent initiatives they have taken up. They also distributed a brochure for future
reference. To wrap it all up, the third graders watched a short movie and wrote down their reflections.

MYP On the 4th of September 2016 we had to clean the storeroom on the 7th floor as our Service as
Action activity. We mopped the floor and cleaned a few of the shelves. We also arranged the properties.
We divided ourselves into two groups, one group was responsible for mopping and the other was responsible
for handling the other items in the room. We also arranged the charts and hoardings in the room. We had a great
time and were happy to learn something new. It was an overall great experience, and would like to do something
like this again.

For the current year, 10 students have enrolled for Mathematics Club. It is a wonderful
start for the Mathematics Club in July 2016! One can see the fervor in us, students during
interactive sessions!
The aims of the Mathematics club are to:
Guide students further understand basic concepts
Provide exposure to Mathematical Research that is happening around them
To extend a platform to work collaboratively on a single given task
Hone the skills of inquiry and communication
Our first meeting was held on 24 Aug 2016 and 9 students were present and was a brain storming session. The Fields
Medal or The Highest Prize (Medal) given in Mathematics is a prize awarded to two, three, or four
four mathematicians under 40 years of age at the International Congress of the International Mathematical Union
(IMU). The Fields Medal and the Abel Prize have often been described as the mathematician's "Nobel Prize". We
discussed about Mathematician Prof. Villani who recently visited India is also a Fields Medal winner for the year
2010. We discussed about his research area of interest in the field of Mathematics.
As a part of a mathematical problem, we talked about application of LCM and HCF in real life context and one
problem on Flashing of lights (similar to the Light signal) was given to solve in the class. We students were excited
to get the solution though we initially found it difficult. We ended the first meeting with the note that we will work
out the problems at home and converse about the solution in the next meeting. We look forward to our Mathematics
Club activity!

Visit To PYP Library
We are in the journey of an Interdisciplinary unit (IDU)-Design and English language and literature. The unit is
focused “My story book” where we will script and design our own story books. We are learning about short
stories and story writing in English. We intend to make a it far more interesting by applying Design Technology.
As a research on what books are preferred by children, we visited our PYP Library.
There we interviewed Mr Sachin Sawant, our PYP librarian. We asked him questions like, “What is the average
number of books issued daily?” and “Which types of books are most liked”? He gave us the answers we were
looking for. With the information, we brainstormed on the targets and what type of stories they will be! We were
ready to make a baseline for our story and make an idea with a rough draft. Our stories will be targeting mainly
students from ages 6 -10. In the stories, sentences will be short and simple easy to understand by that age group
readers. This will help young readers enjoy reading. We hope to open their minds and explore the reading world
with our story books. This is an on-going process and we shall finish it very soon!

As a part of our Design and (IDU)-Design and English language and literature, as a part of our Service as action
we all agreed that we would make a digital story book to attract young students. So, we decided to visit the PYP
Library so that we could get to know what kind of books is being issued. We had prepared a series of questions to
ask the PYP Librarian, We found out that a lot of students do like to read but at the same time a lot need to be
pushed. But, it still felt pretty good to know that a lot of students do like to read and fiction books in specific. Our
story books will be given to the library for all to read and enjoy!

French Language Students Sample French Cuisine in Mumbai
They say that the best way to learn is through experience. consequently, the IBDP French students
were taken to a French café for a field trip, for cultural immersion in order to polish their French. The
venue was the Suzette creperie and café which is located in Powai. We left school at 11:15 a.m. and
walked into the eatery at around 11:55am. The café had a very pleasant ambience and looked fresh,
warm and homely. The proprietor enlightened us about how it all started five years ago and about
the dishes it specializes in. He spoke in French to enable us to get a feel of the French accent. Without
wasting any time and hungry with anticipation, we ordered food. They must believe in the saying
‘hunger is the best sauce’ because they really made us wait for it. But the food was worth it! All the
ingredients were fresh- the lettuce was crispy, the tomatoes juicy, the bread spongy and the cheese
melted in the mouth. All the ingredients were combined in the perfect blend to make dishes that were
as splendid as they were filling. But the cherry on top was the bonding experience that school trips
always offer. Dining and travelling together are one of the few things that can truly bring people
closer; and travelling back with your friends while listening to music after having hearty meal is, by
me, one of the best feelings ever.

THE INTERVIEW
The IBDP business course includes a study of Human Resource Management
which covers recruitment and selection procedure. It was therefore quite an experience for the
students of DP 2 when we were asked to present ourselves for interviews. To give us first-hand experience
at the recruitment process, our Business Management faculty Ms. Kinnari arranged a mock interview round.
We had different job positions to apply for. Each of us had to make a resume and a cover letter that matched
the job description. This was a learning experience in which all were able to know how to write and format the
documents in preparation for the interview.
The interview took place on different days for different applicants and each of us the opportunity to be able to show
our prowess and different skills during the scheduled time. Some of us dressed formally for the interview to make
the situation more realistic. The interview environment was a source of great anxiety and pressure. It was also quite
challenging as our critical thinking and problem solving skills were put to test by the questions which were asked.
The capability of being patient as well as to deal with the pressure being created by the interviewer was also an
aspect that we faced. The activity was in all a very venerable learning milestone for each of us as we learned how to
handle ourselves in such settings which are a major part of life and career wise. The interview also created the urge
of inquiry and enhances our learning skills from the feedback we all got. It was a reflective exercise and one whereby
great caution had be taken with each word uttered and this required us be able to grasp and think quickly as well as
carefully and relevant to the situation.
The activity was able to prepare us to be able to know the expectations of our soon approaching university
interviews as well as interviews to expect in other levels in life not only that but also enhance our listening and
communication skills as well as our thinking and problem solving skills. It also made us to be aware of the different
kind of situations you might face in an interview most of all there was great learning and it was an enjoyable activity
