Happy New Year to
ALSI members and friends.
Accordionists are encour-
aged to attend and play
your specialty selections at
ALSI meetings and special
events in 2010. Special
concert artists and show-
case performances will
continue to delight ALSI
audiences in the new year.
Outstanding accordion-
ists are scheduled for early
in 2010. The excitement
will begin in January with
accordionist extraordinaire
Tom Eskola. His wizardry
on both digital and acoustic
accordion will amaze listen-
ers.
The entertainment just
keeps on coming. March
brings the incomparable
accordionist Ms. Bonnie
Birch from the Seattle
Washington area. The
very expressive dynamics,
technical articulation and
stage presence will excite
any music lover in the au-
dience.
Ms. Bonnie Birch will
present an active accor-
dion workshop prior to
her concert. Accordion-
ists from other clubs will
want to attend Bonnie’s
workshop and concert.
In April, Sylvia Barber,
a world class accordionist,
will share her musical gen-
ius for improvisation, bel-
low shake and special
sound effects in concert
and in a workshop. Her
repertoire includes music
from legends in the accor-
dion world including
Charles Magnante, Pietro
Frosini, Maestro Galla-Rini
and Pietro Diero.
We are very fortunate
to have these wonderful
musicians coming to ALSI
in San Diego.

Page 2 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
MEMBERSHIPS: for the calendar year, January to December, are $25.00 U.S.A., $26 Canada, $27.00
for International delivery. Partial year memberships can be purchased. Use this calculation as follows:
Subtract $2 for each month that has elapsed for the calendar year. Therefore, if you are joining with a USA
club membership in July, six months have elapsed, so 6 times $2 would be $12 to deduct and the formula
would be: $25 - $12 = $13, thus the payment would be $13. Make check or money order payable to ALSI
and send to: Helen Estok Schoell, at P.O. Box 151357 San Diego, CA 92175. The REED BLOCK is
published once each month for delivery to members prior to the next meeting. (Meetings are the second
Sunday of each month). Your input to the REED BLOCK is invited and should be submitted to Helen Estok
Schoell or email to Bob Page at webmaster@accordion -club-sandiego.org

HAPPINESS AT ALSI
January, 2010
by Sharon Marotte
December 13 was the last ALSI meeting for
2009! Margarita Romero was the mystery
player for the day. She has been practicing for
quite awhile to play for us. She played many
nice Christmas songs and also played the piano.
It was nice to hear her playing as I came into
Bailey Hall. I, Sharon Marotte, played at
Crider #1, Vicki Eriqat was at Brandel and
Bob Warner played at the cafeteria. Bill
Barr and Larry Kaiser were the MC’s for the
day. Folks were requested to play polkas -
Gale Evans could not come over from Pheonix
to do the Showcase – she was planning to play
lots of polkas.
Gloria Ensign was the first player of the
day with her polka songs…She played Santa
Claus is coming to town polka, Up on the
housetop polka, Jolly Old St Nicholas Polka,
etc. She likes to sing along with her songs and
others sang along also.
The Friday Morning Group played next –
this group consists of Gloria Ensign, Roni
Palazzolo, Erika Baier, Larry Kaiser &
Sharon Marotte. Their polkas were entitled:
Merry Christmas polka, Hoop de Do, Enzian
and Gloria polka. This group practices the first
and third Friday of each month and will prac-
tice at Pacific Springs Retirement Village in El
Cajon, where Gordon Nyhuis and Doris Ma-
zanek live. Good job everyone!
Vicki Eriqat entertained us with the
Cleveland Polka, Smoke Gets in your eyes
polka, and It was a Very Good year/Lemon
Tree polka. Almost anything can be played as a
polka, don’t you think?? Vicki also sang along
with her songs.
Sharon Marotte played the Minnesota
polka with some audience participation. The
Dakota Polka will be played next month. The
food break was ready and we wanted to get
on with the celebration.
A table of food was presented to the club
as a tribute to Gloria Ensign for her year of
service as President to ALSI. A delicious cake
was served, made by Helen Stables, with an
inscription to Gloria.
Gloria Ensign led a memorial time for
ALSI member John Cesinger, who passed away
recently. Several folks spoke about him – told
about memories they had of John. Larry Kai-
ser told about John bringing the Barbershop
music to the Friday Group, Gloria Ensign
talked about their times at Silver Falls Accor-
dion Camp, Erika Baier talked about losing
John as a friend and Gordon Kohl told about
their trip to Europe together. He also talked
about humble times, life, careers, etc. Gordon
played on a song which was one of Johns fa-
vorites, Lilli Marlene. John liked to play big
chords, Chicago style.
Gloria presented the new board members
for 2010: Gordon Kohl, President, Bill
Barr and Mary Lou Erwin as Vice Presi-
dents. Vicki Eriqat will continue as treas-
urer and Helen Schoell will continue as sec-
retary.
Gordon Kohl, Mary Lou Erwin and Bill
Barrl presented Gloria with a beautiful plaque
with an inscription that expressed apprecia-
tion and thanks for her service to the club for
this past year.
The Ensemble played several polkas –
Rocking Around the Christmas Tree polka,
Beer Barrell polka, Frosty the Snowman polka,
and Jingle Bell Rock polka. The ALSI group
consists of Vicki Eriqat, Rena Watton,
Erika Baier, Kari Andrews, Sharon Ma-
rotte, Kjell Holmes, Bob Page, Jenny
Amaya - Al Piselli and Norma Kreischer

HAPPINESS — Continued
also joined us – what fun we had!!
Next up was our Finnish couple, Sami
and Tiina Zein from Ramona. They played 3
lively polkas – Iltin Tiltu polka, Bye Bye polka
and Finn polka. They must practice night and
day, they are so good together!!
The Polka Dots next played 3 polkas –
Angelina polka, Clairinet polka, and Amour
polka. The ladies are Vicki Eriqat, Rena
Watton, Linda Hibbert, Kari Andrews,
and Sharon Marotte. They are a busy
bunch of Grandmas!!!
Linda Hibbert stayed on stage to play
the Pennsylvania Polka and Hoop De Doo
polka. Good job, Linda. Lots of toe tapping
to your music.
Farrie Ann Nichols was up next to play
her tuba bass accordion which we really like.
She played the Merry Christmas polka, Major-
ette polka, and the Jenny Lind polka. Mr.
Gunter danced for us – it is amazing…he uses
a cane to walk but dances all over the place!
Way to go and keep dancing!!
Jorgen Rosenfeld came to ALSI from
Oceanside - all dressed up in his lederhosen.
He strolled around Bailey Hall, singing to us.
Some of us songs were – Edelweiss, Hafbrau
house, Armed Forces songs, I’m Dreaming of
a White Christmas, Auf Weidersen, etc.
Good to see you again, Jorgen.
Russell Camp closed our meeting with
three beautiful songs: Mary’s Little Boy Child,
En la noche los pastores Velen and a song
from France, Angels We have Heard on High.
Good job, Russell. You play beautiful songs.
2009 has been a fun and busy year for
ALSI. Lots of new things and different types of
meetings. We hope 2010 will be an exciting
year for the accordion. It makes a difference
when lots of people attend and cheer us on.
See you in January, February, etc…. Come and
support ALSI!! —

Appreciation for Service as

A grateful Thank You to everyone in the
ALSI Club for allowing me to serve as your
president in 2009. Yes, it was a busy year for
all of us, especially me trying to do the impos-

I needed many of you to help me and I was
truly blessed with the greatest, dedicated ac-
cordion players to fill the jobs that had to be
done.
Jane Ford for taking over the kitchen and
doing such a great job of the food for
Heritage Day.

helps set up the tables each time.

been special and giving break time with
coffee and cake a new experience.

and our Open Mike players at the meet-
ings and has the program moving with
ease.
Sharon Marotte who does everything for
us such as writing for the Reed Block, play-

for the Steering Committee, taking pic-
tures and being our Historian when
needed.
Jack Marotte who has the microphones
working all of the time from his room in
the back of the hall.
Merle Williams who is always there to help
set up the video, tables and chairs each

on the phone and contact members and
meet everyone at the door each month.

CHRISTMAS APPEARANCES
by Kjell Holmes
Tommie’s Christmas Party at Kelly Elementary
Years ago I
t o l d m y
daughter Julie
how Evie
Carlson and
Rena Watton
would play
their accordi-
ons for chil-
dren in grade
school. Shortly thereafter I was requested to play
at Kelly Elementary. This is a grade school where
my grandsons have attended or are attending.
This year as, I have done before; I was again
requested to play for my youngest grandson Tom-
mie’s Christmas Party. Grandpa accompanied
them on the accordion while children sang Santa
Claus songs. Tommie’s teacher said it was the first
time in her 17 year career teaching that a grand-
parent came to play music at the children’s Christ-
mas Party. —
Christmas Program at Standley Park Recreation
Center.
Again this year ALSI Accordion Ensemble was
invited to play Christmas Songs for the annual Chil-
dren’s Christmas Party. (The ALSI Ensemble uses
this facility twice a month to practice in one of their
rooms at the Recreation facility)
Often parents bring their children by to see and
listen to us play the accordion. The accordion is
probably a rarity to
the children. So we
are all very happy
about the children’s
experience with
the accordion.
We have played
for the children’s
Christmas Party for the last several years and this
past year we were invited to play for Standey Park’s
fall festival fund raiser for the local school.
We always enjoy the Christmas Party because
we join in the children’s Christmas Breakfast Buffet.
They always set us up with a separate private room
to eat .This gives us a chance for our own separate
time to enjoy some Christmas cheer and fellowship,
which we enjoy very much. —
COMING THIS MONTH — TOM ESKOLA
Tom Eskola will
be presenting a
Showcase for the
January ALSI meet-
ing. He recently
shared these com-
ments with us at
ALSI:
“As always, I look
forward to per-
forming for the
ALSI accordion club
of San Diego. In the past I appeared with my Hon-
nerVox4P as a soloist and with Sharon Marotte on
two occasions. My trio also performed on two
occasions representing accordion-led musical
groups.
My first lesson was in 1953, and my formal les-
sons ended when I received my Associates of Arts
in 1967. Mr. Charles Bertolino was was my teacher
and music mentor for 11 years, before I joined the
US Navy.
I started my first dance band in 1963, and have
been a band leader ever since. Dancing to accor-
dion music is what brings happy people together.
Today, my dance band is called "Our Song". We
have performed for our exclusive clients since
1975, when I returned home from the US Navy.
For the January ALSI showcase, I will perform
several dance tunes, some Euro-flavored, and tasty
Latin in a blend of analog acoustic and digital
sounds. My accordion is a Concerto model DA-
200.” —

Dear ALSI:
I wish to express my appreciation for the
2009 ALSI Presidency of Ms. Gloria Ensign.
While this is my first year in the accordion club
and my first year of playing any instrument, I
was very fortunate to have come to know Glo-
ria as my instructor.
I was instantly impressed with the energy
and efficiency of her once she became the ALSI
Club President. I know that while juggling the
multitude of demanding duties for ALSI, she
continually went the longest mile to be sure the
monthly concerts, picnics, festivals and all other
activities were fun and impressive for all of us to
attend.
I am most grateful for the work she al-
ways accomplished as ALSI President and her
ability to simultaneously continue her amazing
private teaching lessons for myself and others.
She was able to successfully maintain her enter-
tainment for convalescent homes, accordion
entertainment for others, and still wiggled in
time as a much loved mother and grandmother.
Gloria has taught me more than I ever
thought possible about accordions, the Clubs
throughout the United States and other coun-
tries. I am blessed to have discovered this car-
ing talented lady. I am richer because of her
teachings and believe her Presidency was a
“wonderful” asset to the Club.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Moll

BLOOD DRIVE APPEARANCE
Chargers Blood Drive XXXI
November 24, 2009
by Sharon Marotte
The Chargers Blood Drive XXXI is
once again history. This is the sixth year
that the ALSI Ensemble was asked to
play and we were excited and honored
to do so. We as-
sembled at 8:30
am at the Town
and Country
C o n v e n t i o n
Center and were
the first musical
group to per-
form following
the color guard
and singing of
the National An-
them. The
T h a n k s g i v i n g
Dixieland Jazz Festival “Jammers” fol-
lowed us.
Our Ensemble members that played
were: Vicki Eriqat, Rena Watton, Kari
Andrews, Erika Baier, Sharon Marotte,
Bob Page, Kjell Holmes, Norma
Kreischer, AL Piselli and Phil Rizzo.
Burch Ertle played the upright bass and
Ed Ducharme joined us on the drums.
We looked nice in our white shirts,
black pants and red vests. The sound
system and facilities were top notch.
The mikes were set up for us and sound
controlled from across the room.
As we played , our pictures were on
huge screens on either side of the stage
for all to see from the back of the Con-
vention Center. We played for 30 min-
utes and received some good applause.
We are grateful to families of our players
for their support – Penny Page, Alene
Rizzo were there plus Marcy and Georgia
(Rena’s daugh-
ter and grand-
d a u g h t e r ) .
They were
able to take
pictures while
we were on
stage. Lots of
folks were
lined up to get
a u t o g r a p h s
from the
Chargers and
Charger Girls,
who were on our left of the stage so they
got the most attention!
We had a chance to wander around
the floor, visiting the booths of vendors,
picking up free goodies, enjoying hot
dogs, and drinks. We each received a long
sleeved white t-shirt for playing. We also
received a nice letter of thanks and a
color photo of the scoreboard at a
Chargers game. The scoreboard read:
“Chargers and S D Blood Bank thank Ac-
cordion Lovers Society International for
supporting Blood Drive XXXI.” —
