JB Discussion: KONY 2012

The Junior Branch community had an amazing discussion this month on the campaign KONY 2012. The JB World group on Facebook became a forum for exchanging ideas, sources and information, we strongly recommend you to check it out! Many of the Juniors expressed their opinions on the subject. What’s yours?

SUPPORT OR NOT

“This is a phenomenon that is helping to show the general public that small things, like clicking share on a link, can help make a difference... Its more than just donating a few bucks, its more than clicking share, its uniting people from countries all across the world to come together- even if the cause or the organization has flaws.”-- Tara Joshi

“I agree it contains too little information, and too much sensationalism, HOWEVER it does it's job of raising awareness. That's only the first step.”-- Erik Bohnsack

“My major issue with this film has a lot to do with the sensationalism, but not only that. It also depicts Ugandans as helpless victims, with the White man having to come in and save. It is a great example of the continuation of colonialism... Most of the footage we see of Ugandans depicts them as suffering, grateful, or helpless to their situation. It takes away all of their agency as individuals.”-- Brittany Bernard

“I'm happy that people are becoming aware of the situation in Uganda, but I hope that people take the time to learn about it themselves. Awareness is great, but if it's uninformed, it is just as detrimental!”-- Hana Strickland

“Is awareness good? Yes. But these problems are highly complex, not one-dimensional and, frankly, aren’t of the nature that can be solved by postering, film-making and changing your Facebook profile picture, as hard as that is to swallow. Giving your money and public support to Invisible Children so they can spend it on supporting ill-advised violent intervention and movie #12 isn’t helping.”-- Grant Oyston, in Visible Children

Summer Camps and

Villages.

The activities held were focused on art, creativity and drawing. Based on Friedrich Glasl’s Nine-Stage Model of Conflict Escalation, delegates had to draw a cartoon/comic showing the escalation of a conflict and its peaceful resolution. All activities ended with a real ly interesting debriefing.

Many different activities were hosted by JBs from Brazil centered around the concepts of power, conflict, religion, integration, racism and peace. Many of these activities were held in collaboration with other programs like Mosaic, IPP and CISV Brazil’s Board. You can read more about these activities on their JB Pedia Page!

Thanks to everyone in Junior Branch for all the hard work and enthusiasm during the year 2011. We hope 2012 brings more opportunities to work towards a more just and peaceful world. /With love, the Content Team.
