Monthly Meetings UpdateWe are meeting in-person this month and we’ll have a weathering demo by Frank Blanton on using Archival Pens. Bring your models for Pass In Review or anything else that you want to share. We’ll have to spread out more than our usual setup, so please be mindful of that and please do not alter the configured chair layout.
We are still at risk for spreading COVID-19 and the decision to attend is yours to make. If you’re in a high-risk category or have been sick, please stay at home. While at the meeting, everyone is encouraged to wear a face covering, no matter what your personal circumstances or beliefs.
AMPS-CV Build Days Our next build days are scheduled for Saturday, September 12 and Thursday, November 27 (Black Friday). Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (or so). Bring electric cords if you require task lighting. Drinks are food allowed, but alcohol is not. Bring a comfy chair unless you like the punishment of sitting on folding metal chairs.

AMPS-CV DemonstrationsOne of the founding principles of AMPS-CV was to always share our experiences and techniques. Demonstrations are one way we do that and while thinking about new demonstrations for 2020, we had the idea to go back in time to see what we’ve already done. Here is that list, which only includes the years 2008-2020 so many were demos not documented. It’s an impressive array of techniques and there’s something for everyone, no matter your skill level or interest. Maybe this list will trigger thoughts about something you’d like to see or maybe something you’d like to share with the group. We should also acknowledge every name on the list for stepping up to demonstrate. We also need to thank Frank Blanton for always working to find and schedule new demonstrations.

After finding the kit’s DS tracks and the Bronco T-74 “workable tracks” unusable, I found the AFV Club T-62 tracks worked perfectly. It’s the solution for any future Sherman projects.
The figures are from Alpine and I’d like to find two more for a full crew. Fit on the model was poor in some places but putty and strip styrene were used to fill some gaps

Tamiya US M4A1 Sherman
in 1:48 scale
by Ashley Abernathy
This was a pandemic build straight from the box with more focus on painting and weathering. The tracks are link and length. The markings are from the kit using Vallejo decal setting solutions. AK Interactive’s Olive Drab Modulation paint set was used
on the model to provide subtle shading. A Naples Yellow oil paint filter was applied to change the overall tone. A pin wash with Burnt Umber helped to define details. The suspension was weathered with splatters of Naples Yellow combined with dry pigments.

Tamiya US Ford Moto-tug
in 1:48 scale
by Bob Henry
The kit was a basic build but Bob researched the paint color to arrive at this shade, which the US Navy applied to deck equipment in WW2. A few grease stains
were added and the paint was faded using a light grey wash.

Dragon British Sexton II
in 1:35 scale
by Alex Valz
The kit has sprues from three different kits and suffered from poor fit in some areas. The kit tracks were initially replaced with Bronco separate links ones, but liquid cement flooded the connection points and resulted in non-workable tracks that were too crunchy to shape around the suspension.
Alex plans to buy another type of track to complete the project. The paint is all Tamiya, with a combined mixture of Olive Drab, Dark Yellow and Dark Green along with Black. Weathering was done with oil paint streaks.

Tamiya US M10
in 1:35 scale
by Frank Blanton
The kit is a good representation of the M10 but Frank added a Tasca M2 .50 cal MG, a Karaya tow cable and light lenses from MV Products. The park gate is from italeri and the plants/vegetation is from Silflor.

Field of Armor/Armorpax US M16 Halftrack
in 1:6 scale
by Chip Williams
The foundation for this model is the Field of Armor M3 Halftrack and the Maxon M45 Quadmount anti-aircraft system is from
Armorpax. Chip then added many additional parts and details that he fabricated by hand. Most were made from ABS to keep things light. Many screws and bolts are actual parts; some of which are nylon to make length adjustments easier than metal. The dash and many internal parts were fabricated from scratch and the windscreen
was made from Lexan. A radiator was added and the louvered armor that protects it was constructed to remain movable. Nearly all hinges and latches work as the actuals did. The .50 cal ammo is turned brass with steel connecting links. The turret’s battery label was printed out using an image found online.

ICM US Standard B “Liberty” truck
in 1:35 scale
by Mike Petty
The kit’s plastic is soft so Mike’s warning was to be careful during cutting and sanding. The parts don’t always fit well and dry fitting is a must before applying
cement. Mike used a HobbyTrax track alignment tool to keep the chassis parts square.

AFV Club US M60A3 TTS
in 1:35 scale
by Erik Roberson
Erik replaced the kit’s tracks with AFV Club’s separate link set. The MILES sensor strip on the turret is 3M Blue painter’s tape. The Hoffman simulator was detailed with Riich Model vinyl rope. The commander’s
MG blank adapter is a combination of brass rod and modified kit parts. The clear periscope parts were painted with Tamiya Clear Blue. The splash guard on the glacis is wood strip. An 8” howitzer round tube was installed on the turret side, which was used as a waterproof container for maps and accessories. The bustle rack did not fit well. Spare track blocks were added to it along
with a tarp made from a Klondike ice cream bar wrapper. The #60 markings were cut with the Shadow Hobby circle cutter and the number transfers are from a craft store. The light housings are painted chrome, then black, then Alclad Purple Exhaust. The figures are from Valkyrie with Royal Models mic and headset details.

AFV Club US M728 CEV
in 1:35 scale
by Scott Bregi
The engine pack is a resin item from Legend and when installed into the engine bay it sat too low. Scott added styrene shims underneath to bring it in line. He also had
to detach some of the final drive parts so that they could be lined up with the corresponding kit parts.

Takom US Jeep & German Panther Ausf.A
in 1:35 scale
by Frank Blanton
Both Takom kits go together well and have high levels of detail. The Jeep has photo-etched brass details for the tiny handles and comes with an option for open or closed windscreen glass. It also includes the figure seen here.
The Panther kit includes the interior but Frank added wires and scrap parts for more accuracy. The rubber tires were cut off the wheels to depict a burned out condition. Zimmerit sheets in styrene were purchased and once cut to fit worked out very well.

Zvezda Soviet T-34(76)
in 1:35 scale
by Mike Petty
There is nice detail and the product line is much better now than years ago. It’s mostly out of the box, except that the barrel is by RB and the tracks are Master Club individual
links. Mike used AK-Interactive Dark Steel pigments to impart a worn look on traffic areas.

Revell US Corporal Missile with Transporter
in 1:40 scale
by Scott Holtz
This kit was originally released in 1955 but has been re-released over the years. It’s built straight from the box and uses the kit’s decals. The missile was painted with Tamiya Fine White Primer. The black is
Model Master Acryl Black and the Olive Drab is Tamiya XF-62. The photo below is from President Eisenhower’s Inaugural Ceremony in 1957.

Freedom Models US MIM-14 Nike Hercules
in 1:35 scale
by Scott Bregi
The red stripe indicates a nuclear warhead. The missiles were painted differently but Scott has depicted to look of the ones that were deployed around the Newport News area in the 1960s. The erector is movable to facilitate transport and display. It is fairly clean because these were kept in underground bays and only exposed occasionally.
