MISSING THE BUS

India is currently under the sway of Hindutva, a victim of repressed feeling since its independence

in 1947 from the British rule. Not being able to declare itself a Hindu State, India desires to see a

neighbor, Nepal as a Hindu State that it was till 2008. Whether it is a vicarious satisfaction India

wants to derive from it or it has some undeclared agenda to maneuver mileage at home and abroad

is not yet spoken out. Nepalese are still in quandary to understand it. However, Indian Prime

Minister Narendra Modi's wrath over the issue does not seem to cool down.

The politics in India nowadays has become so absurd that the meaning of some glorious terms has

become unceremonious/abusive/insulting. The terms Hindu/Hinduism/Hindutwa are these days

considered as communal, while secular/secularism are considered as terms related to the minority

community. The terms nationalist/nationalism are considered radical. Patriotism has become an

abuse word for people who argue for the nation. Bhakta is used for referring to people supporting

the current Central government. Liberalism is considered as a leftist-leaning idea (since when did

leftists/rightists become liberal?) Saffron is communal, green is secular. Intellectual means a

person who opposes the BJP-led government and the list goes on.

As protectors of ‘national interest’, which itself has been redefined to privilege the ideology of

Hindutva, the gaurakshaks have taken law into their hands. They have been empowered to inflict

physical torture and violence on those who they think are flouting their diktats. This has

increased the alienation of Dalits and Muslims thus adding to the intensity of their assertion. By

conceiving certain food habits and cultural practices of the dominant class and caste as

‘national’, the Hindutva fanatics have repeatedly assaulted the Dalit and Muslim community by

branding them as cow-eaters and violators of law and order.

DENIGRATING GANDHI A GROWING FAD

It happened on Dussehra this year. Militants among the Hindutva votaries projected the slaying

of demon king Ravana by Lord Rama as a symbol of unity for the entire country. Prime Minister

Narendra Modi, who described this year’s Vijayadashami as special, has been projected as the

incarnation of Rama and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif was the ten-headed Ravana. Of

course, the context is India-Pakistan and the current spat between the two neighbours.

JNU remains on the boil ever since the disappearance of the first-year Biotechnology student

Najeeb Ahmad. Hundreds of students are agitating against callousness and inaction of the

university administration, the police and the Government. Several modes of protests—holding

sit-in, blockading Vice-Chancellor, marching to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and

forming a human chain —have been deployed for bringing him back and punishing the culprits.
