Kelly Hatton Receives
Plummer Scholarship
Kelly Hatton, (pictured second from the left), daughter
of PP Art Hatton and his wife Pam, was one of five
outstanding graduate students at the University of
Wyoming to receive the Plummer Interdisciplinary
Excellence Scholarship. The award recognizes their interdisciplinary achievements related to
environment and natural resources, and supports their continuing graduate studies that bridge
academic disciplines…...
Hatton, a candidate for an M.F.A. in creative writing and environment and natural resources, will
use her award to travel.
“This summer, I'll be traveling to India to interview organic cotton farmers. The trip is the culmina-
tion of a research project I've been working about different models of cotton production in India,”
Hatton says. “After the trip, I plan to share the stories of these farmers in a series of articles for
publication. The funds from the Plummer Award will help fund my trip.”
Each year, the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources makes awards available to UW
students through a private endowment from Evelyn S. and Chiles P. Plummer. Selection criteria
include academic performance, extracurricular merit and demonstrated financial need.
Through its academic programs and institutes, the Haub School provides tools to build lasting
solutions to environment and natural resource challenges. This includes skills in critical thinking,
interdisciplinary approaches, collaborative decision making, and application of sound science.

Rotaract News
Ashley Elliott, a transfer student who will
be attending SUNY Geneseo this fall as a
sophomore, contacted me in May about
joining the Rotaract Club. She mentioned
she was the President of the Interact Club at
LeRoy High School and wanted to continue
her youth service.
We arranged to meet for lunch on June 24
when she was at the College for Transfer
Student Orientation.
I described the service projects the Rotaract
Club had participated in over the years and
gave her an overview of what the Geneseo
Rotary Club does for Rotaract and the
community.
Nicole Rountree, Rotaract President, has
been in contact with Ashely Elliott via

2014 Rotary International Convention Ends With
The Passing Of The Torch
RI President Ron Burton put the final touches on the 2014 Rotary Convention in Sydney by reminding a
packed Allphones Arena why they joined Rotary. “Being a Rotarian isn't about our own achievements, it
isn't about our own careers, it really isn't about us at all. It's about the people we help," said Burton. "At the
end of the day, the only thing that matters in Rotary is how much better the world becomes because Rotary
is in it."
The four-day event, which drew to a close on 4 June, attracted more than 18,000 attendees from 153 coun-
tries. Burton encouraged convention goers to return to their clubs ready to do more to improve the lives of
others.
"Together, we can dream big and we can achieve. We can change whole communities for the better, not for
a day but for a lifetime," he said.
Rotary changes lives by improving literacy, making water cleaner, bringing better health care to mothers and
children, and eradicating polio worldwide, Burton said. But he warned that complacency could set Rotary
back……..

The graphic for the Summer Festival advertising booklet cover was designed by Bob & Marilyn Lyon.
A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their letterhead and publications.

PROGRAM REPORT Jennifer Mehlenbacher Speaks at Club Meeting
J ennifer Mehlenbacher, Branch Coordinator and
Registrar at the Livingston County Branch of the Child
Care Council, was our program speaker on June 16th.
Jenn explained that anyone caring for more than two
unrelated children on a regular basis, for less than 24 hours
per day, must be registered/licensed.
In order to obtain an application to apply for a child care
program license or registration to operate a family day care
or group family day care, you will first need to take Child
Day Care Orientation. This orientation will walk you
through the information you need to know to determine if
you are interested and able to start a family-based child
care program in New York State. This orientation will also
introduce you to the important rules and regulations you
need to know in order to run your business.
The Child Care Council Course Calendar includes all of
the training content areas that professionals need to main-
tain their NYS child care license or registration. Their staff
can help you to determine what classes you need, and walk
you through the registration process. They can also direct you to any additional requirements
for your type of program and inform you of any financial assistance that may be available.
The New York State Office of Children and Family Services website has a complete list of
regulations for each type of child care.
Jenn also explained the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which is a federally
funded program, offers a monthly reimbursement to License and Group providers for serving
nutritious meals and snacks to children in a child provider’s care.
If you have any questions about the services the Child Care
Council provides, Jenn can be reached at 346-6050 or you
can visit their website:

started/
