CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEACOMMUNITY PLANNING & BUILDING DEPARTMENT

    INTEROFFICE MEMO

    TO: Doug Schmitz, City Administrator

FROM: Rob Mullane, AICP, Director of Community Planning and Building

    DATE: February 3, 2015

    REF: Code Compliance Summary Report

During this monthly reporting period (through 1/23/15), City Code Compliancestaff fielded a total of 16 code compliance requests. A total of 12 active caseswere closed over this same time period. For the 2014 calendar year, 406 codecompliance requests were received, and 323 of these cases have been closed.Staff will continue to work towards resolution of open cases. For the requestslogged this month, the average initial investigation turn-around time was 2business days or less.

    TRENDS:

The number of code compliance requests was 38% less than the previousmonth. The number of requests fluctuates from month to month; however, thesmaller number of this months requests is likely because of the winter holidays.

The most common types of requests include reports of unpermitted signage,Right-of-Way (ROW) encroachments, and lighting. Vacation rentals also remaina prominent concern.

    NOTES:

Departmental staff have noted progress in compliance related to gas blowers. This is likely due to on-going outreach to landscapers and warnings that have

been issued. Future proactive compliance efforts will address Right-of-Wayencroachments, excessive lighting, unpermitted signage, and vacation rentals.
