2017 Moolah® Shrine PotentateDean Isbell

Nobles,

As I write this article in early November, I can only speculate on how some of the final events of the year have or will turn out. Nonetheless it is a bittersweet thought to know that the year you worked and waited so many years for is coming to an end. I hope you had as much this year as I did!

Membership was, is and will continue to be our largest challenge. We had some great membership events such as the Seis de Mayo, Poker Run and Veterans Night and created a lot of new Nobles. Unfortunately, the Black Camel and suspensions will probably outrun the gains and we will be down a bit for the year. Hopefully the forward momentum will continue and increase with the new membership team in 2018. Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske, has created and is promoting the I AM R U Committed to Membership program. I encourage all of you to nominate some good men that you know and let’s work on them together to join our great fraternity.

When this year began, I had many plans and goals I wanted to achieve. I believe that with the help and hard-work of many, most of those goals were achieved. We had our first ever Sportsmen’s Raffle which was quite successful. First Lady Kim managed a fantastic Macho Mania fundraiser that did exceedingly well. The Circus, despite the challenges of having new management, did well. By the time you read this, The Big Party will have happened and I’m certain it was a tremendous success. All these events and many more, including the Presentation Ball, Circus Parade and Kick-off, Imperial Session, CSSA, Holiday Ball, Santa’s Lunch etc. require the help of many people and all were fantastic.

There is no way in this little space to thank everybody, but I would like to offer a HUGE Thank You to Chief Aide Rich Viner, his special Lady Cheri and all the aides and others that helped throughout the year. Thank you to the Divan and their Ladies that have been involved in everything throughout the year, giving untold hours of their time for the betterment of Moolah. In addition, thank you to the Moolah Staff; Illustrious Sir Gale Bennington, Monica Smith, Lauren Whittington, Pat Dodd along with Robby Gruver and his maintenance crew that have helped with the many tasks, projects and events throughout the year to make them successful.

The profits from these events are allowing us to move forward with some projects that will enhance the rentability of our building. By the time you read this, you should see progress on the Gazebo, our new website will be up and operating, you should notice improved wi-fi through much of the building, the parking lot has been patched, sealed and re-striped, many LED lighting upgrades have been installed etc. There are other projects in the works, including Ballroom upgrades, that will be happening as we move forward.

To all the Units, Clubs and Committees that work so tirelessly to raise money and awareness for our Hospital, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. To my crew of jokesters, I thank you for providing some levity in the meetings as one of my goals for the year was to work at making the meetings more fun. I think we succeeded and still managed to keep decorum when important or serious matters needed to be handled.

In the end, the primary goal of any Potentate, or any other leader for that matter, should be to leave the organization better than he or she found it and that the groundwork has been laid for further improvement going forward. I thank Illustrious Sir Lenny Martin for leaving Moolah in a great place for us to build upon during this year. I believe that, with all your help, Moolah is better than we found it and is positioned to grow and prosper in the upcoming years.

Finally, I cannot thank my lovely, gracious and devoted wife and First Lady, Kim, enough for putting up with me during this eight-year adventure and for caring about Moolah and the Hospital as much as I do. Additionally, though I tried to be everywhere and do everything, I thank my children, Kaitlin and Erik, for being the great children and now young adults that you are.

Soon, we will have our annual elections. I look forward to seeing all the fantastic things that Kyle McEvoy has planned for 2018 and the future growth and prosperity of Moolah. I wish the best of luck to Moolah and the Divan in 2018 and the years to come.

Yours in the Faith,

Illustrious Sir Dean A. Isbell

Remember the Reason for the SeasonBy: Casey Thompson

Merry Christmas!

Just thinking about my view of Christmas it takes me back to my childhood. I am and was always blessed with all I needed, and way more. I can remember wak-ing up at some crazy time like five o’clock Christmas morning and then having my presents sorted shortly after that. I could not wait much past 5:30 A.M. to wake up my parents and older sister. Somehow my parents over looked the way too early wakeup call by their youngest child and Christmas morning was filled with open-ing presents and playing with new toys.

Christmas started looking different to me as I got older and I had no interest in waking up much before 10 on a day when I did not have to get up for school or work.

Then my view of Christmas really changed again as I started working at my first job out of college. I worked for a not-for-profit in downtown St. Louis serving people struggling with homelessness. My first Christmas there was one filled with guilt. I was opening so many presents on Christmas Day and many of the people I was serving at work were sleeping outdoors. The closest thing they would see to a Christmas present that morning was their next meal or just a little warmth after sleeping outside in December. As my relationship with God grows, I’ve learned to look at what really matters to God versus what worldly tradition would suggest.

1st Corinthians 13:13 NLT

Three things will last forever Faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love.

I have no idea where those toys I opened as a child are now, and I am sure that I out grew all of the clothes I thought I had to have back then.

The first Christmas was celebrated for the birth of Jesus, the son of God who was sent into this world to save us, not condemn us.

John 3:16, and 17

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever be-lieves in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

We live in a broken world and if it wasn’t for God sending Jesus to live in this worldand then to be later crucified, we would have no hope of inheriting eternal life with God.

Now that is something to celebrate!

As you gather with friends and family this Christmas season, please remember the reason for the season. Please celebrate Jesus this season.

Art Goerke receives Van Driver of the Year Award for Shriners Hospitals for Children - St. LouisWhen thinking about Art Goerke an old saying comes to mind: still waters run deep. This lays the tone for the man that Art is. Art is a quiet, non-imposing man with a heart the size of an ocean. However the quiet part is deceiving. Art is never quiet when a need arises. Any time I call him I hear: “I’ll take care of it” or “We’ll take that run.” Fortunately for me, I hear that often from Art. I have never called Art that he wasn’t willing to help. He never complains about how many trips I add to his day, how early they are, how late they are or how hot it is outside. Art drives Monday and Friday and he works the registration desk on Wednesdays. He never seems to tire of helping and he always does it with this little smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes.

WAY TO GOART!

The 2018 Moolah Shrine Circus will be held at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Mark your calendars for March 22nd through March 25th. We are currently working with the Royal Hanneford Circus to secure the best acts possible.

We will have our Circus parade in Old town St. Charles on Saturday, March 10th at 11 AM, followed by the Circus Kickoff at Moolah. We will participate in the St. Patrick Day parade to get exposure for our circus. All Shriners are asked to join in the fun for all these events.

Ad packets are now out. The earlier you get to the sponsors, the more time they will have to get funds budgeted for our circus. The time to get ads is NOW!

The Circus Angel program is available for anyone that can help send children to our special perfor-mance on Friday morning. Any amount will help. Look in your ad packet for information about the program. Any questions, please contact Bill Bradford at 314-974-3084.

Child Coupons are being sent to the printer and will be available at the Shrine. A BIG ‘Thank You’ to all our Child Coupon Sponsors.

Shriner General Admission tickets are also being sent to the printer and will be distributed to the tick-et chairman. Remember, selling these tickets is our responsibility to get people to come to our circus to make it a success.

The Circus Committee is meeting on the second Wednesday of each month from September to March in the Guides unit room. Any and all volunteers are welcome to join us. There is always plen-ty to do. Arrive at 5:30 PM for a light dinner and the meeting begins at 6:00 PM. Please RSVP so we know how much food to prepare. 314-732-2121 or [email protected].

Hello, from your Moolah Band:

Moolah Shriners Community Band is having the best season in recent memory. We have such ex-cellent musicians and are making strides getting new members, but we still need more Nobles. If you have heard us at the monthly meetings, you know that the Band is playing well and we continue adding music to our repertoire to not get stale with the same pieces over and over. Nobles, if you played when you were in school, why not join us? We want to be able to play for the meet-ings and for ceremonials, but we need your help. We are proud to represent Moolah Temple and spread the word of Shriners Hospitals to many who are unaware of the mission of the hospitals. We are often reminded by our audiences of the treatment received at the hospital, or of a rela-tive’s membership in the Shrine.

The Band is also looking forward to playing for the Christmas programs in December for the kids and want to do our part to bring cheer to our patients and for all the kids. We hope to see you there.

Come see us on Wednesday nights at 7:30 and rekindle the fun you had when you were in the school band. If you need any information, please give me a call or e-mail and I will answer any questions you may have.

Also, remember we are a community band, so if your child or grandchild, or you significant other plays an instrument, he or she is welcome to play in the Band. We meet Wednesday evenings at 7:30 to practice. Our concerts are mainly Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 7:00, so if you can spare some time for a good cause and a lot of fun, just call for our schedule and give us a try.

We would love to have you participate with us.

We always leave ‘em smiling!

[email protected] MERRY CHRISTMAS!

What a wonderful time of the year and a great time to be a Shriner! We have so many festive events planned for us. As Ambassadors, we need to represent our organization by attending as many of the activities as we can. Don’t miss the Moolah Shrine Holiday Ball, Santa’s Brunch and the Shriners Hospital Patient Party. This will keep us busy, especially when we add in all the unit parties. Most important for Ambassadors will be the Christmas Party, with our ladies, scheduled for December 8. Always a good time!

The next Ambassador lunch will be our Christ-mas party on Friday, December 8 in the Oasis Room. Invitations will be mailed with all the details. Ambassadors, you are missing a great time if you do not attend this special event.

Please watch the Camels’ Tales for information about all of the Moolah activities. Information about all Ambassador Events will come to you through the Camels’ Tales, email, or word of mouth. For luncheon reservations call or email Wally Bowman at [email protected] or call him at 314-498-6915. Please note this is a phone number change.

Director - Rick Gwydir 314-504-1091Drum Major - Dave Glenn 314-560-4431By Jim Hubeli The Drum Corps was asked to participate in the Veterans/Shriner Recognition Dinner on November 3. We welcomed the invitation as we are always interested in supporting all past and present veterans. The usual flag ceremony that is used at monthly meetings was followed and we played " When the Saints Go Marching In " for the Arab Patrol entrance. Next was " You're a Grand Old Flag " and we finished with " Here Comes the King " ( Better Known as the Budweiser Song ) for the Patrol marching out. The National Anthem was sung by the International Shrine Champions Moolah Chanters. The main speaker was retired Chief Warrrant Officer Randy Ottinger, a 40 year helicopter pilot veteran who gave an interest-ing talk about Veterans and Shriners. He also gave his personal experiences overseas, even sometimes with his son who is also a helicopter pilot. Illustrious Sir Randy is also a Past Potentate in 1993. Later, the Drum Corps played the Armed Forces Medley which includes the official hymn or song of each service. This includes the Coast Guard, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Army. Gale Bennington, P.P. 2004 and Administrator showed a short film and talked about our new St. Louis Shrine Hospital. Earlier in the year, the Drum Corps made a dona-tion for the EOS imaging system at the St. Louis Shrine Hospital. Recently, we also donated to the Shrine Temples in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico to help with the hurricane situation.

Merry Christmas!! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. The Potentate's Holiday Ball was well represented by our unit and everyone in attendence had a great time. Very shortly, and I'm hoping this comes out before it happens, Santa's Brunch and my favorite event the Shriners Hospital Patient Party will be coming up. I know our unit goes all out for these 2 events and how could you not be involved when there is a room full of kids looking for a crazy clown to interact with them. These 2 events really set off the Christmas Holidays.

Congrats to Barley (John Frederick) for being appointed an Ambassador. Great honor and well deserved. The Central West End Halloween event was a lot of fun for those who could make it there and got to participate in their parade.

Our Trivia Nite will be here before you know it. The Team Trivia Company keeps calling and say-ing how excited they are to see what we might do different between the rounds this year. Well I can tell you there will be several changes just to keep the people laughing and enjoying the everning. Door prizes are needed as well as raffle items. Please bring them in as soon as you can so our ladies can get them organized. Please use the donation letter when approching someone and if you receive a large donation get their name and address so we can send them a thank you letter.

Skit practice will start this month as well as face-painting practice. Newcomers welcomed. These will be on Monday nights starting at 6:30.

Finally, Merlin (Tom Dolan), just emailed me and said he is one of the final 10 applicants who have a chance to be one of the 5 US citizens to go up in space and stay on the space station for a 2 week stay. He didn't tell me exactly how much it will cost him, we all know how filthy rich he is, but he passed his physical and is in great shape for this adventure.

At my age "Getting Lucky" means walking into a room and remembering what I came in there for!

HO HO HO ! It’s darn near THAT time. Jingle bells and all that wonderful PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD ALL MEN AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!

The many years we have celebrated this time of year together causes us to pause to remember that we are brothers in need of each other. THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS is again in all the hearts of those who believe in loving peace.

We, who are privileged to enjoy the opportunity to please the multitudes hearing our singing, thank all that give us that opportunity. You, of the too many who have suffered the wanting, the depri-vation of never having heard our lilting tones, are invited to ask us to sing at any legitimate gathering of your choosing. Enough of this supplicating, we sing much better than we beg. All we ask is that you consider The

Chanters when you are in need of entertainment. We need the work and someone or some group out there is in need of the joy of song.

Have you ever enjoyed the glamour and fun of a Potentate’s Holiday Ball? December 2nd, the month of joy to the world! The blessed birth of Christ...families, good friends, parties and splendiferous food, the likes of which answer all of your Xmas epicurean desires. Presents, some given and some received.

As a matter of fact, she’d probably appreciate you taking her to this years’ Brunch with Santa on December 9th. It’s mainly for the kids, but Santa makes it fun for all.

And don’t forget The Chanter’s Christmas Party, December 11th. It’s all food and fun for you and the love of your life. Say goodbye to 2017, and hello to the hope of an even better 2018. Life is what you make it...It’s all up to you. “ 30 Monte”

If you have not been to the club lately then you have been missing a good time. Lots of fun and fellowship. Did you enjoy the 3 piece chicken dinner in October? How about the smothered pork chop dinner on 11/17. Did you hear about our ceremonial at Tiger? It was held on 11/27/17, that was also election night and Frog leg night. Come out to the club and meet the new nobles and the new leaders for 2018.

In December, we have some fun events sched-uled. The clowns are back and have been very active; they will be having a chili supper on 12/15/17. We will start serving at 5pm. Cost is only $7.00, come out and help the clowns with their fundraiser. Then on 12/20/17 there will have a bus trip to Moolah for the Stated meeting. This is election night so it will be a stag event. If you haven’t been up to the Temple this is a great opportunity to meet several of the other Shriners in Moolah. A good time is always had at the Temple. You will also have an opportunity to vote for our leadership for 2018.

See your Tiger Tales Newsletter for all the information on events at the club. The December meeting will probably be moved to 12/18/17. Check your Newsletter to confirm. Folks start showing up around 5:30pm. Come out and enjoy the club.

The Tiger Shrine club meets at 2315 N Stadium Blvd, Columbia, MO 65202.

Capital Shrine Club held it's regular meeting at the Club Tuesday November 14, 2017. The Club was honored to have the following distinguished visitors from Moolah Temple: PP Steven Pieper and Lady Brenda; First Ceremonial Master Mitch Weinsting and Lady Beth; and Chief Aide Emeri-tus John Hewitt and Lady Juanita.

The Shrine Club Band, "The Missouri River Bottom Band" played before dinner music; and PP Steven Pieper sat in with his guitar. PP Pieper presented Noble Frank Dahm with a Presidential signed Certificate and Pin for his Vietnam Ser-vice. Also, he presented Noble Walter Rottmann with the 50 year Shriners Pin.

Noble Ben Dennison announced that Noble Ed. Glawson was appointed and Ambassador for Moolah Temple at the Temple’s Stated meeting in October by Ill. Sir Dean Isbell. Noble Dennison was unable to obtain an Ambassador Pin for Glawson as the Temple does not have a supply source now. The Co-Chair of the Ambassadors, PP Dennis Kelly sent his original personal Pin to Ed Glawson via Ben Dennison.

The slate of officers for the Club for 2018 were voted in, with David Perkins to be President. The Three Club Installation of Capital, Tiger and Little Dixie will be held at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club February 24, 2017. A committee was ap-pointed to make the arrangements. As usual A & J Dollars were collected. The 50/50 drawing was won by Beth Weinsting, who donated it back to the Club. It was a GREAT EVENING for all.

We want to extend an invitation to all ladies, 18 and older, to join our wonderful group of ladies for a sisterhood of philanthropy, good friends and good times. We would love to have you join us!. We welcome your ideas, energy and willingness to help support our temple. As always, all our funds go to support Shriners Hospitals for children.

We are creating our outreach programs to help our Masonic family know who we are and what we do. We want everybody to know we are a network of 137 temples, 126 in the U.S. and 11 in Canada. Our membership exceeds 25,000! We have donated over 3.1 million dollars to help with patient care at Shriners Hospital for Children in 2015, and 55 million dollars total since our inception in 1913. Read about us at our newly enhanced website: donfdn.org.

This last month we held our annual bazaar and turkey dinner the end of October. The bazaar was successful as always and want to thank all of our patrons, workers and donors for all their help. The reason why this event is so important is it allows us to continue our support of the hospital, which is our only philanthropy. On October 31 and November 1, we hosted our Supreme Queen Karen L Keuther of Athor Temple No. 9, Buffalo, New York. This was a wonderful visit! We toured the hospital and later had lunch at the Granite City Food and Brewery! For dinner, we took this beautiful lady to Crown Candy Kitchen. The next evening, we had our dinner and meeting, which Supreme Queen Karen talked about her other visits to hospital and temples, 83 of them so far, and gave wonderful accounts of successful surgeries and outcomes. We love our Supreme Queen and hope she comes back to visit.

We attended Trunk or Treat and it was a great time as always! Attached are some of our pictures of the “haunted Cemetery”. Even though it was so cold, we enjoyed the event and seeing all of the children and their unique costumes. Please stop by our display case in the downstairs hallway of our Shrine and pick up a brochure of our order. It tells who we are and the great things we do.

We have so many wonderful ladies that work hard to insure that we support the Shrine Hospital to the best of our ability, and who are dedicated to

helping our Shriners when asked. If you have any questions or would like more information about our organization, please contact Queen Ruth at 314-416-8161, or PQ Mary LaTragna at 314-566-4727.

Hi everyone. Nailah Court #107 participated in the Trunk or Treat event for Halloween and had a great time. Our decorations were a Hawaiian theme, but the weather did not cooperate with us. It was windy and cold. The kids came out anyway, so it turned out nice.

Happy holidays to everyone. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Then it will be the Christmas holiday. I cannot be-lieve this year is almost over. I want to say Merry Christmas to all. Have a wonderful holiday with family and friends. Maybe we will get just a little bit of snow to make it seem more like Christmas.

Nailah Court #107, Ladies Oriental Shrine, are very happy to be ending the year with two new line officers. Thank you, Lady Marcia Diekhoff, First Ceremonial Lady and Lady Karen Duer-beck, Second Ceremonial Lady, we are very proud of you both. We would love to end the year with new petitions, just ask any member of Nailah for a partition, and we will be happy to tell you all about our fun organization. The more ladies we have working for the kids of Shrine Hospital of St. Louis, the more kids we can help to have a better life.

♫ It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ♫ at Moolah Shrine Center. We all have such a busy social schedule, with so many obligations, that it is easy to lose sight of the “reason for the sea-son”. Take time this year with your family, friends and neighbors and share the joy of the season. We start off the Moolah Christmas festivities with the Potentate’s Ball on December 2nd. It’s your chance to show off that gown that makes you feel like a princess, enjoy the company of fellow Shriners and celebrate the wonderful job that our Potentate and his First Lady have done this year. Thank you Dean and Kim Isbell.

December 9th is the Moolah Santa Brunch. Always a favorite for the kids. It will have it all: pictures with Santa, refreshments, games, crafts, clowns, face painting and much much more. Make your reservations for the grandkids, nieces, nephews or neighbor children. They will thank you for the wonderful time.

December 10th is our Shrine Patient Hospital Party. Our patients look forward to this event all year. It never fails to live up to their expectations. The Shriners pull out all the stops in providing a fun filled event. Again, this party will have it all: pictures with Santa, refreshments, games, crafts, clowns and face painting.

December 13th is our December/Bake Sale luncheon. The bake sale is a much anticipated event with spirited bidding for the delicious baked goods offered. This is an easy way to help out Temple Club, bake and buy.

Reminder that your “Ways and Means” committee is always looking for items for their table.

A blessed Christmas to all our Temple club mem-bers and their families.

Peace on earth, good will to men
