About this Presentation

• This is a short presentation which attempts to graphically represent the issues surrounding Moonsighting in the UK.

• Although the aim is to display information in simple terms so that it is easy to follow, the content has nevertheless been verified by scholars to ensure that it is accurate.

Birth of the New Moon• Occurred at 05:01 GMT on 11-Oct-2007.

• 08:01 Saudi Time

First Sighting

• First visibility is possible around 16 hours after Birth. On 11-Oct, at sunset in New York, the moon would have been 17:21 old.

Visibility Cycle

• Starting from New York, all countries to the West should start to see the moon on 11-Oct.

Visibility Cycle – Round 2 (12-Oct)

• All the remaining countries should see the moon on 12-Oct.

Saudi Sighting

• This happened on 11-Oct when the moon was 09:59 old at sunset in Mecca.

Implications of Saudi Sighting

• We re-align the visibility cycle. All countries to the West of Saudi should sight the 'growing' moon on 11-Oct.

Implications of Saudi Sighting (2)

• All countries to the East of Saudi should sight the 'growing' moon on 12-Oct.

The Reality

• One hour after the Saudi sighting, the moon was not sighted in South Africa or Egypt.

The Reality (2)

• A further two hours and no sighting in Morocco.

The Reality (3)

• In fact, nothing to report even from Los Angeles or any other intervening location.

Question?

• How could the Saudi sighting be missed by Europe, Africa, North America and South America?

Grounds for Doubt

• Saudi sighting was way before the 16 hour visibility period.

• Sighting not corroborated by any country to the west of Saudi.

• Saudi's own Umm al-Qura timetable suggested that 1st Shawwal was on Sat 13-Oct-2007.

To Doubt or not to Doubt...

• Doubt is a 'subjective' issue in that it is ultimately for each one to make up his own mind.

• Where a person has no doubt in the Saudi sighting – he should have celebrated Eid on Fri 12-Oct-2007 as fasting on Eid is forbidden!

• The question is, what should be done if there is a doubt?

Eradicate Doubt

• The answer is simple. Eradicate the doubt.

• Insist that the Saudi sighting will only be accepted if it has been independently verified by another reliable sighting in the West.

• This does not constitute rejection of the Saudi sighting nor reliance on scientific calculations. It is simply a common sense approach to ensure that our ibadah is safeguarded.

• Hadith: "da’ ma yuribuka ila ma la yuribuk" (Abandon/Leave what is doubtful for that which has no doubt)
