From the Desk of Principal Kleve:

College and Career Readiness

A comprehensive high school experience helps prepare our students for life after Moon Valley.

Our goal is to have each student college and career ready (CCR) by graduation. American College Testing (commonly referred to as the ACT) defines college and career ready as the “acquisition of the knowledge and skills a student needs to enroll and succeed in credit-bearing first-year courses at a postsecondary institution (such as a two or four year college, trade school, or technical school) without the need for remediation.” At Moon Valley, students have extensive opportunities to engage in rigorous curriculum and explore potential career fields.

Dual Enrollment and AP classes allow our students to earn college credits while they are completing high school requirements. Students can begin earning college credits their sophomore year. College credits are available in Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and several Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

Moon Valley has a variety of CTE programs available. CTE classes incorporate academic and technical skills in the classroom. Additionally, they promote communication, critical thinking, and problem solving skills.

Some of the programs available on our campus include:

Child Care (COOP) Fire Science Nursing Mechanical Engineering Engineering Business and Marketing Drafting Culinary Arts Architecture Journalism Law Enforcement Stagecraft

Moon Valley also partners with West-MEC to offer students access to off-campus programs. Some of these programs include:

Diesel Mechanics Dentistry Aviation Technology Welding Auto Technology Cosmetology Auto Collision Veterinary Sciences EMT

Counselors have started to prepare for the 2016-2017 academic year. This preparation includes creating and reviewing your child’s four-year plan. A four-year plan is an academic road map for your student, based on their specific interests and career aspirations. During this meeting, the counselors will be discussing class options for next school year, including Honors/AP courses and elective classes. I encourage you to discuss these options with your child. The deadline for a student to change their class request for the 2016-2017 school year is January 29, 2016. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s counselor.

Voters approved the passage of a $70 million bond at the Nov. 3 election. The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office reported 59.71 percent “yes” to 40.29 percent “no.” The approval allows the district to fund capital improvements at each of the nine high schools in the district, including improvements to roofs, school safety upgrades and cafeteria infrastructure renovations. Two Pathways to Becoming a First Responder

AAA Cares Program Mentors Future Business Leaders

We are fortunate to highlight the efforts of our very own MV student Sanoma Galab, who was selected to the 2016 class of AAA Cares. This is especially significant as it is their 10th Anniversary serving students in alternative high school settings in the valley.

The AAA Cares Program offers selected students training and hands-on experience in business and computer skills necessary to compete in today's workforce. The program provides a supporting and encouraging environment, instructors, and mentors to develop students' proficiency in public speaking, working with business technologies, contributing to team goals, and interviewing. Emphasis is on treating the students as adult learners.

Students are selected by a panel of interviewers from high schools in several districts. They are matched with a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona which provides professional support services to AAA Cares students and mentors. Class members are eligible to compete with their teammates for an internship at AAA upon completion of the program.

Fire Science

What is Fire Science? Well here at Moon Valley it's an elective option for you. In Fire Science we discover many careers in the fire service from actually being a firefighter to other professions like investigations, dispatch, and paramedic. This class can give you a jumpstart as you search for your ideal career after high school. You will get to train in firefighter gear and use the equipment that actual firefighters use. We explore the whole fire service and aren't just making firefighters ... this is about serving our communities and helping people.

Police Science

Currently Moon Valley is the only GUHSD campus that offers Police Science. What does our class offer? Police Science isn't about training students to be police officers. That's what police academy's are for. Careers in the Law Enforcement field are plentiful. Our class introduces students interested in a law enforcement field a glimpse into their career choice. We explore 911 operators, Department of Corrections, Parole, Probation, FBI, State, County, uniformed patrol and a host of others. Students also learn the history of Law Enforcement.

Students Support STUCO Efforts Benefiting Moon Valley Community

St. Mary’s Food Drive

During this year’s annual food drive, 766 pounds of food was collected. Between that and some monetary donations, Moon Valley High School donated a total of 872 meals to St. Mary's Food Bank.

Link Drive

Student Council held their annual Link Drive from November 9th

through the 25

th. This is an exciting event around school where

they raise money for Moon Valley families in need. Links could be purchased for .25 each with the competition to raise the most money being between the 3

rd hour classes. This year they

reached their goal and raised $2,000.

White out for Lung Cancer

During the month of November, Student Council campaigned to bring awareness to Lung Cancer. Lung Cancer is the leading killer of men and women in the United States. It sadly takes more lives than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined, which unfortunately, many people are not aware of. November was Lung Cancer awareness month, and the color chosen to shed light on this disease is white. Every Friday in November, student council encouraged students and staff to wear white to support those who have been affected by this cancer. They also sold white ribbons during both lunches to raise money to help fight Lung Cancer. Lastly, student council planned an activity during Rocket Fest on November 25th that will allowed students to see just how precious and valuable their lungs are. Their hope was that through these efforts, students and staff were made more familiar with Lung Cancer.

Student Council appreciates participation in their awareness efforts and

support of all the donations that will go towards helping others in our Moon Valley community.

Moon Valley Career Center

The Career Center plans college visits, lunch events for post-secondary education options, financial aid workshops and much more. Students can stop by before school, after school, or during both lunches Monday through Friday.

The windows in the Career Center are also a great resource with a plethora of information posted on them for students. There is a monthly calendar which lists what representatives will be available for students and upcoming trips. Also posted on the windows are possible scholarships and post-secondary opportunities. Many of these opportunities are also displayed around campus on the bulletin boards as well as on the announcements.

This year Mrs. Marshall, Career Center Specialist, has begun to utilize our mass e-mailing system to notify juniors and seniors of upcoming events, trips, scholarships, testing information and much more. She encourages students to regularly check their student e-mail or stop by the career center.
