1 Introduction

1.1 Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this procedure is to provide a detailed step-by-step procedure for preparation of all types of flash cards (except 6330 and 6370) for Tellabs 6300 NEs. Pls. note that this procedure complements the existing ELAN MCE card reader/writer procedure. The reason for introducing this new procedure is that ELAN program used so far is having some limitations, e.g. PCI-E card and 1GB SDRAM are not supported. So if you dont face these limitations you may continue to use ELAN program.1.2 Audience

This procedure is intended for technical staff both from the Customer and Tellabs side.

2 Overview of procedure

Installation of Cygwin SW(dd tool exe). Installation of md5summer SW. Preventive actions for Preparation Flash card. Identification of BELKIN Universal Media Reader slots. Detection of Compact flash card or SD card. Procedure of READING the image file. Procedure of WRITING the image file. Procedure of checking the CHECKSUM. (Verification of Image file.)3 Maintenance Operation Procedure

The MOP will be described in detail in this section.3.1 Preparations

3.1.1 Prerequisites

To prepare the Flash cards, the following items are required:1) Standard laptop or desktop PC. PC running min. XP SP2

2) BELKIN Universal Media Reader.

3) Compact Flash Card (128MB, 256MB Or SD memory card (1 GB)

4) Install Cygwin SWTo read and write images from SD flash card pls. use attached freeware "dd" tool for Windows. It originates from Cygwin. Unzip it in a directory, e.g. c:\flashcopy.

5) Install md5summer SW To check that files have correct checksum we use attached freeware md5summer tool for Windows. Unzip to user defined directory, e.g. c:\md5

4 Detailed Procedure:-4.1 Preventive actions for Preparation Flash card:-

To check whether the PC or Laptop is running on min. XP SP2 or not. PC or Laptop must have at least one USB port.

BELKIN Universal Media Reader must be glow with Green LED just after insertion in USB port. *Do not Eject Flash* card during the process, it may harm the CF card.

4.2 CF card preparation procedure Steps v/s expected Output:- Step1:- To read and write images from SD flash card pls. use attached freeware "dd" tool for Windows. It originates from Cygwin. Copy the below C:\flashcopy\flashcopy.zip file and save into C drive.

Step2:- Exact the same file using Extract here, there will be C:\flashcopy folder.Step3:- Remove the flashcopy.zip file.

Step4:- C:\flashcopy folder will show the below files:-

Step5:- Insert BELKIN Universal Media Reader in any USB port. It must be glow with Green LED.Step6:- Then, insert the CF card (128MB or 256 MB) at slot CF/Microdrive or SD memory card (1 GB) at slot SD/MMC/Mini SD port in BELKIN Universal Media Reader.Step7:- Go to My Computer right click and select MANAGE, then select Disk Management OR

Identify SD memory adapter device on your PC. This is done as follows

a. Go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> disk management

b. The device for 972 MB SD flash card is found here using the convention Disk 0 = /dev/sda(typically first hard drive, i.e. your C drive)Disk 1 = /dev/sdb

Disk 2 = /dev/sdcSuppose if Compact flash (CF) inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect device is Disk 1 = /dev/sdb, then use Device (=/dev/sdb) in Read /write command through CMD.If SD/Mini SD card inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect device is Disk 2 = /dev/sdc, then use Device (=/dev/sdc) in Read /write command through CMD.

Warning :- Do not use Disk 0 = /dev/sda in CMD if the Disk is detecting in Disk 1 = /dev/sdb Otherwise it crash your C:\drive without showing any warning message.Example of computer management snapshot shown below:

4.3 -: For Reading existing Image from Flash card :- Start command prompt on PC (start -> run -> cmd)

Issue commands from command prompt:

c:

cd \flashcopy

Read flash card: Assuming SD flash card device is Disk 1 on your PC the command is:

dd if=/dev/sdb of= bs=512k count=256

Example: dd if=/dev/sdb of=sdflash.bin bs=512k count=256

Warning:-Command will be used according to detection of the disk in the Computer management.

Suppose if Compact flash (CF) inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect Compact Flash card in Disk 1= /dev/sdb in computer management, then use Device (=/dev/sdb) in Read /write command through CMD.If SD/Mini SD card inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect SD card in Disk 2 = /dev/sdc in computer management, then use Device (=/dev/sdc) in Read /write command through CMD.

Do not use Disk 0 = /dev/sda in CMD if the Disk is detecting in Disk 1 = /dev/sdb Otherwise it crash your C:\drive without showing any warning message. Here "if" stands for input file "of"for output file and "bs" for block size and Count = number of Counts.

So command above will read 128 MB from SD flash card to file on PC.Typical duration 4 minutes, For example:-

Image file will be shown in C:\flashcopy folder as TEST.bin file as below:-

4.4 -: To Write a Flash Card :-

a. Write flash card: Assuming SD flash card device is Disk 1 on your PC the command is:

dd if= of=/dev/sdb bs=512k count=256Example: dd if=sdflash.bin of=/dev/sdb bs=512k count=256Warning :-Command will be used according to detection of the disk in the Computer management.

Suppose if Compact flash (CF) inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect device is Disk 1 = /dev/sdb, then use Device (=/dev/sdb) in Read /write command through CMD.If SD/Mini SD card inserted in Universal media reader then it will detect device is Disk 2 = /dev/sdc in computer management, then use Device (=/dev/sdc) in Read /write command through CMD.

Do not use Disk 0 = /dev/sda in CMD if the Disk is detecting in Disk 1 = /dev/sdb Otherwise it crash your C:\drive without showing any warning message.

Note: Image file (.bin file ) should be present in c:\ flash copy folder.

PLS. TAKE CARE not selecting your hard disk as an output device no check for this!!!!

Here "if" stands for input file "of"for output file and "bs" for block size and Count = number of Counts.

So command above will write 128 MB from PC file to SD flash card.

Typical duration 5 minutes

4.5 -: How to check Checksum of TEST.BIN file:- 1. Copy the below .zip file and paste in C:\ drive.

2. Unzipped the above file with Extract Here.

3. Double click on the md5summer.exe below window with popup:-

4. Select the flashcopy, and click on Create sums:-

Click Add then save.

Below is the required Check sum:-
