Scotland

Peter on the rockface

by Peter Harris

My best trip ever was to Glencoe inScotland. It's got the best climbingin Britain. Itt world class and afantastic place. The view of themountains is just wonderful. Istayed at a campsite with ten otherboys. We were all there on a week'scourse, learning to climb. We hadto do everything ourselves: puttingup the tents, cooking our ownfood, cleaning our stuff and so on.Our two suides were Fersus and^----,-:-:------i

-uonald, two reallv exDenence(lclimbers. The first two days we justlearned how to use the gear, but onthe third day we climbed a cliff. Itwasn't a very high one, only aboutfive metres, but when you lookdown a clifffrom a height of just

five metres, you feel a bit funny inyour stomach. Every day we did alonger climb andsoon we werentso scared any more because weälearned such a lot from our guides. On the last day we climbedRannoch Wall. We had to walk upto the rock face first and then theclimb started. We went on the mostfamous route, on the face calledAgagt Groove which is 99 metreslong. It took us two hours and weneeded a lot of help lrom Fergusand Donald. When I got to the top,I felt wonderful. Fortunately wedidn t have to climb back down. Wetook another route, an easier one.We were all so tired after that week, but i would love to do it all again.
