Intro to Dystopian Fiction

The antonym of utopia, a dystopia is typically a future, or an alternative timeline in which society is ruled by fear and dehumanization. Dystopian fiction is often a social commentary on real-world issues like religion, economics, politics, technology, etc., that tries to warn or dissuade the society from going down the path to becoming a dystopia. Often times, these Dystopian Novels portray their society as a Utopia, but then reveal the flaws of the society and how horrible it really is. Dystopian novels are able to create a haunting reading experience designed to excite the reader, but also make the reader think “what if?”
