DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT FLU VACCINATIONS
Sibongile Walaza, a Medical Epidemiologist at the Centre for Respiratory Diseases and Meningitis (CRDM) answers these key questions:
Can the flu vaccination be bad for you?
Each year, millions of people use the flu vaccine and most people do not experience problems with it. As with any medicine, including influenza vaccines, there is a small chance of a reaction. However, these are mild (soreness, redness, or swelling where the injection was given, mild fever, itchiness) and resolve on their own. Rarely people may experience a severe reaction to the flu vaccine or a component of the vaccine, including egg protein. Severe reactions would include difficulty breathing, drop in blood pressure, Guillain-Barre syndrome (loss of sensation and/or paralysis starting from the feet) or anything that requires hospitalisation. Severe reactions are uncommon. For an example, some studies have reported Gillian- Barre syndrome occurring only in 1-2 per 1 million people vaccinated. It is advised that people who have had very severe reaction to influenza vaccine or any of its components should not get influenza vaccine. People with severe egg allergies should be vaccinated in a medical setting and be supervised by a health care provider who is able to recognise and manage severe allergic conditions.
How effective is the flu vaccination?
Getting the influenza vaccine is the best way to prevent getting sick from influenza during winter. Influenza vaccines have been used to prevent flu infections since the 1950s. The flu vaccine contains viruses that are inactive and so cannot cause a flu infection. It is important to note that there are many other viruses which circulate during winter and these can also cause illness that looks like flu but do not have the same severe complications. Influenza vaccine will only prevent illness caused by the influenza virus. It is also possible to get flu that is caused by a flu virus that is not included in the vaccine for that particular year.
