So, is there life after 10 (or 20,30 ) Tb/in2 ?

•  There are clearly limits to conventional HDD technology somewhere in the 1-5 Tbit/in2 regime, but there are multiple paths forward to around 10 Tbit/in2

• Can we imagine making 4 nm period bits to achieve 40 Tbits/in2 ?

• Density of 2-dimensional storage of all forms (magnetic and semiconductors is approaching limits

• A 3-D technology breakthrough would seem to be required thereafter… , but there is nothing in the horizon(?)

• DNA-recording would be the ultimate limit of Multi-Multi-TB/in2

The development of 3-D magnetic recording is divided into two phases:

1.  Multi-level Recording: not optimally utilized 3-D space

Note: Effective areal density increase is by a factor of Log2L (where L is the number of signal levels)

2.  3-D Recording: each magnetic layer is separately addressed

Note: Effective areal density increase is by a factor of N (where N is the number of recording layers)

Note: Each cell is 50 x 50 nm2
