A Mothtr's Story
The Lost Child byJulie Myerson
Last spring, when British author JulieMyerson came out with The Lost Child, about her son's addiction to the potentmarijuana strain known as "skunk," the49-year-old mother of three was slammed forbetraying motherhood itself. This month, thescandalous memoir arrives stateside. So what'sit like to be called the worst mother on Earth?Me:Your seven previous books were novels. What compelled you to write about your eldestson's estrangement from the family?JM: I was trying to write about artist MaryYelloly, who died in 1838,but I kept grinding toa halt because of the situation at home. My
teenage son's drug use had spiraled out of con-trol, and we had thrown him out of the house. Ifelt it was important to highlight this problemwith a drug that people don't treat seriously.Me:What do you make ofthe charges thatyou're profiting from your son's problems?JM: My agent urged me to think hard beforedeciding whether to publish. We anticipatedpersonal criticism in reviews-but not front-page attacks from people who hadn't read it.Me:What was your son's take on the book?JM: Before I decided to publish, I showed it tohim. He asked for very few changes, and evenagreed to some of his poems going in. It seemedto me then that he was OKwith it, so I wasshocked when he was quoted saying he wasn't.Me:Do you regret writing the book?JM: IfI had known the extent of the outcry-tabloids camped outside my son's flat, the tollon my family-I wouldn't have done it. What'smade it bearable is the positive response fromparents in similar situations. -Louise Chunn
