Dear Mr. Smith:
ATC Associates of North Carolina, P.C. (ATC) has completed the geotechnical drilling and sampling investigation services for the site located at the intersection of East Morehead Street and South McDowell Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate soil and rock conditions in the area of the proposed stormwater improvements. Field Exploration The soil test boring locations are shown on the Boring Location Plan in the Appendix. The borings were established in the field by an ATC engineer by measuring distances and estimating right angles from existing site features shown on the site plan provided us. The boring locations should be considered approximate. Borings SB-ATC-1, SB-ATC-1A, SB-ATC-4, and SB-ATC-5 were performed at the approximate locations designated on the attached Boring Location Plan. The borings were extended to depths ranging from 27 to 43 feet below the existing asphalt surface elevation. Each soil test boring included intermittent split-barrel samples and Standard Penetration Tests to evaluate soil composition and consistency. Descriptions of the materials and conditions encountered in the borings are shown on the Soil Test Boring Logs in the Appendix. In the laboratory, the rock cores were evaluated by the project engineer where rock type was determined and the percent recovery and rock quality designation (RQD) was measured. The percent recovery is the ratio of the sample length obtained to the total length of the core run expressed as a percent. The RQD is the percentage of the length of the core recovered in segments four or more inches in length compared to the total length of the core run. Care is taken during examination of the core to see that the fractures in the core lengths caused by drilling or handling are ignored for the purposes of the RQD determination. The percent recovery and RQD are related to rock soundness and continuity. The measured values are indicated on the Soil Test Boring Logs in the Appendix.

Laboratory Testing
The soil samples were classified by a geotechnical engineer using the Unified Soil Classification System in general accordance with the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) Test Designations D-2487 and D-2488. In order to establish the pertinent characteristics and the nature of the soils encountered, representative soil samples were selected for Atterberg Limit tests, soil fraction passing the no. 200 sieve, and moisture content testing. The following laboratory tests were performed on selected split-spoon samples. The laboratory test results are included in the Appendix. Classification Tests: Atterberg Limits Tests (ASTM D 4318) were performed on selected split spoon samples obtained during our field exploration. The test results were used to evaluate engineering properties of the materials and to aid in classifying and grouping soils. Soil grain size distribution tests were also performed on selected split spoon samples. Based on the results of these tests, the soils were classified in accordance with USCS standards. Natural Moisture Content Tests: Natural moisture content tests were performed on selected split spoon samples. The natural moisture content tests were to assess the suitability of the on-site soils for use as structural fill and to evaluate the variation of soil moisture content across the project site. Findings The results of the soil test drilling are presented on the Soil Test Boring Logs in the Appendix. The soil and rock description are based on the logging operations performed by on-site personnel during the drilling operations. The results of the laboratory testing are present in the table below. The laboratory data is also presented on the Soil Test Boring Logs at the applicable sample depth.

The soil test borings were performed in general accordance with ASTM Designation D-1586, "Penetration Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of Soils.” A conventional hollow-stem drilling process was used to advance the borings. At regular intervals, the drilling tools were removed and soil samples were obtained with a standard 1.4-inch I.D., 2.0-inch O.D., split-tube sampler. The sampler was first seated six inches and then driven an additional foot with blows of a 140 pound hammer falling 30 inches. The number of hammer blows required to drive the sampler the final foot is designated the "Penetration Resistance.” The penetration resistance, when properly interpreted, is an indicator of the soils strength and density. Representative portions of the soil samples, obtained from the sampler, were placed in glass jars and transported to our laboratory for further evaluation and testing.
