INTRODUCTION
Our journey starts at Kilwinning and takes us through to Stewarton and finally Kilmarnock (the birthplace of Robert Burns the world
renowned poet).
The earliest ancestral record we have for the Morgan's within our family is that of Darral, David or Daniel MORGAN born c.1777 who
worked possibly as a weaver or even a miner in the town of Kilwinning in Ayrshire, Scotland. It may well have been that Darral, David or
Daniel MORGAN came over from Ireland to work in Ayrshire1.
KILWINNING
The town of Kilwinning lies about 30 miles south west of Glasgow in the Cunningham district of North Ayrshire and lies on the River
Garnock.
Kilwinning is perhaps best known for it’s abbey and Masonic background – it’s recognised as the birthplace of Scottish Masonry and is said
to have been introduced by the foreign architect who was employed in erecting the monastery here. The abbey is believed to date back to
1188. The parish also had its own Castle - Eglinton Castle (the seat of the Earl of Eglinton) and was chiefly remembered as the scene of
the great tournament in 1839 by which it was hoped to revive certain aspects of ancient chivalry including Archery. The remains of the
Castle can still be seen today but grounds of the castle have been transformed into the Eglinton Country Park.
Kilwinning is also known for the sport of Archery where the oldest recorded archery event in the British Isles occurred, this event is known
as the Papingo shoot. The event still thrives today and is usually held in the grounds of the old Abbey. A wooden bird is mounted on a pole
and suspended from the clock tower to allow the archers to attempt to dislodge the wings and then the bird itself.
In the past, Kilwinning was noted for weaving and the manufacture of gauzes, muslins, shawls and coal mining.
STEWARTON
The town of Stewarton, about 10 miles east of Kilwinning and about 21 miles south west of Glasgow, lies within Strathannick, with
the Annick Water flowing through the town.
In the fifteenth century the town of Stewarton was the private property of the Stewart kings. Their once was a castle in
Stewarton but this is now extinct. Stewarton, known as the "Bonnet Toun", had been long distinguished by the production of
Highland or tartan and other bonnets (Balmorals and Glengarries), especially regimental bonnets and caps; this business,
which was chiefly carried on domestically, and partially in factories, furnished employment to approximately three to four
hundred people; whilst in the manufacture of carpets kept one hundred and fifty more persons in employment. The making of
spindles for cotton and woollen mills was an extensive branch here, and a considerable number of the cotton mills in Scotland
were supplied from Stewarton. Several woollen mills were engaged in carding and spinning for the carpet and bonnet trades;
the largest concerns belonged to Alexander Kerr Esq of Robertland, Messrs Muir, Dunlop & Co., and Robert Mackie,
established in 1845 in Stewarton. Robert Mackie of Scotland is the only bonnet manufacturer remaining whereas in the
1700's nearly the whole town was involved. The Company operates from its 25000 sq ft site at Holm Mill where over 50
employees are based.
A large portion of the population consisted of silk and muslin weavers, who were employed by the Glasgow and Paisley
establishments
The manufacture or forging of clock-work, for which Stewarton was peculiar in North Britain, was a trade of some
significance, as it formed an item of exportation to the continent of Europe and America.
KILMARNOCK
Kilmarnock lies 6 miles south of Stewarton and about 22 miles south west of Glasgow.
The man now known as Braveheart, William Wallace was almost certainly born in the 14th century in Riccarton, now part of
the present-day Kilmarnock. He was, in fact, the son of Margaret de Crauford and Sir Malcolm Wallace who held the lands of
Riccarton. Ellerslie lies between Kilmarnock and the village of Crosshouse.
In the 18th century, Kilmarnock was notable for its Covenanting activity. The people of Kilmarnock were also involved in
the Jacobite rebellions of the 18th century with the Earl of Kilmarnock playing a leading role in the Hanoverian cause. At first
1 Irish immigration into Scotland, already under way on a marked scale after 1800,dramatically increased after the Potato Famine of 1846, and by 1851
eleven per cent of the Ayrshire population was Irish born. The immigrants, who were most often Roman Catholics, were used in the dirty jobs associated with
industrialization: mining, ironworks and labouring (in, for example, the construction of railways), all of which there was a demand for in the Kilwinning area. In addition, among ironmasters the Bairds of Gartsherrie were pioneers in importing Irish labour to suppress wage demands and they continued to recruit
Irish labour for their ironworks and collieries. These various factors led to tensions between the immigrants and the largely indigenous Protestant
population and there was a sectarian riot in Kilwinning in 1907after the arrest of James McDonald, a Protestant orator.

the Earl of Kilmarnock supported the Hanoverians in trying suppress the Jacobites, but later he changed his allegiance to the
Jacobite cause, the circumstances of which caused his demise and he was beheaded in London in 1746.
Kilmarnock's association with Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns (famous for 'Auld Lang Syne') will forever be
remembered with the publishing of the poet's first book of Scots poems in 1886.
The arrival of one of the first railways (and certainly the first public railway) in Scotland between Kilmarnock and the
harbour at Troon in 1812, established the trend of heavy engineering in Kilmarnock. The line was built to transport coal from
Kilmarnock to the port. Part of the route involved the construction of a viaduct at Laigh Milton Mill. This is now
acknowledged as the oldest surviving railway viaduct in the world. Locomotive construction and associated heavy
engineering continued to thrive. Andrew Barclay built the first locomotive in Kilmarnock in 1859 with Grant Ritchie & Co.
and Dick, Kerr & Co. setting up later in the century. Trams, mining engines and pumps were also produced. Hunslet Barclay
remain the only locomotive manufacturers in Scotland today.
Johnnie Walker whisky was originally produced in Kilmarnock. At the start of its production, the whisky was known
as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, the Johnnie Walker brand is a legacy left by John "Johnnie" Walker after he started to sell
whisky in his grocer's shop.. The brand became popular, but after Walker's death in 1857 it was his son Alexander
Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing the whisky as a popular brand.
Alexander Walker introduced the iconic square bottle in 1870. This meant fewer broken bottles and more bottles fitting the
same space. The other identifying characteristic of the bottle is the label, which is applied at an angle of 24 degrees. The
angled label means the text on the label could be made larger and more visible.
In 1908 the whisky was renamed from Walker's Kilmarnock Whiskies to Johnnie Walker Whisky. In addition, the slogan,
"Born 1820—Still going Strong!" was created, along with the Striding Man logo, a figure used in their advertisements to this
day, created by illustrator Tom Browne, in honour of the founder, and given the same name.
The Distiller Co. took over the business in 1925 and was then acquired by Guinness in 1986, and Guinness merged
with Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo in 1997. Johnnie Walker is no longer blended in Kilmarnock, and has not been for
many years. The bonded warehouses and company offices (now local authority) can still be seen in Strand Street and John
Finnie Street.
The "Kilmarnock Bonnet".
Many of our own Morgan ancestors were involved in the knitting of these bonnets.
This was originally a large floppy knitted bonnet with a torrie (pom
pom) on top that became associated with the town of Kilmarnock where
a flourishing bonnet manufacturing industry existed from early times.
These bonnets became so ubiquitous amongst the poor working lowland
Scots that they became a symbol of Scottishness to the English who
named them the "Scotch Bonnet".
The Bonnet is still popular today and often worn with Scottish Highland
Dress and some Army Regiments. In addition, a great many fanatical Scottish football fans wear
the bonnet as a strong symbol of their identity.

one of which is "High Smithstown Farmhouse". Janet's father, James Dunlop farmed2 around here in one of the
dwellings.
After Daniel's death, records from Scotland's People show that Janet married again on 1 Dec 1838 to Thomas Kidd, a
Sidewaiter, at Ardrossan, Ayrshire. Janet is shown in the 1841 census for Dundonald as a Pirn Winder, and again as
a Cotton Weaver in the 1851 census and a Sewer in the 1861 census. The 1871 census shows that Janet was living at

After John's death we found no record in any of the census returns of 1841 for Mary and her two children, John and
Dorrel. However in 1851 we did find Mary, now aged 36 and a Pirn Winder living and working in Darlington,
Stewarton with her son John aged 15 and working as a Wool Piecer. There is no record of her son Dorrel.
There is an entry in Scotland's People for 5 Aug 1840 for the death a Donald Morgan but no age given - it is possible
that this is Dorral, the son of Mary Wyllie and John Morgan.
11 © Margot Bain and www.Genetika.co.uk
By 1861 Mary now aged 47 and working as a Sewer is still living in Darlington, Stewarton with her son John aged 25

recorded in the census for Stewart in 1851 in which he states he was born in Ireland!
According to the Familysearch.org records James Morgan married Mary Marshall, a Seamstress, on 18 January 1845
in Stewarton but there is no marriage entry shown in Scotland's People despite an extensive search! However
according to some of her children's birth entries, this couple would certainly seem to have married.
Mary MARSHALL was born in circa 18266 in Stewarton and was the daughter of George Marshall, a handloom
weaver in Stewarton.
James and Mary had seven children in Stewarton: Doral circa 1845, Jean/Jane circa 1847-1871 (tuberculosis. Her
illegitimate baby died a month previous having contracted syphilis), Lavinia circa 1849-64 (phthisis), William circa

aged 8 months from diarrhoea, at Avenue Street) and Helen 1859-1952 (married John Hall).
After James' death, we next found Mary during the 1861 census still living in Main Street, Stewarton age 36 working
as a seamstress; with her were her children Jean, Lavinia, William and Helen.
Mary's youngest daughter Helen now aged 11, is living with both her sister Jane (Jean) and her brother William at 39
Lainshaw St, Stewarton and there is no mention of her mother Mary.
Mary Marshall married for a second time after the death of her husband James. Mary's newly married name was

Cross Street, Stewarton)
+26 James MORGAN (b.1858 Stewarton and died aged 8 months in 1859)
+27 Helen MORGAN (1859-1952)

I have a death record for a Helen Morgan, age 78, for 1970 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire but as the records are still closed
(100 year access ruling) I cannot prove this is our Helen but it would seem likely as in 1911 we did find Helen, aged
20 and single, working as a Domestic Servant in the household at 2 DeWalden Terrace, Kilmarnock where Gavin
Scouler, a Retail Grocer lived with his family.
