2019 BAPTISM CLASSES AND DATESClass: Thursday, October 10, 7:00 p.m.Baptism Date: Weekend of October 19/20: Saturday – at the 5:30 p.m. Mass; Sunday – at the 8:15 and 11:00 a.m. Masses.

Twenty-fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Today’s readings concern the lost. The Israelites were lost when they made the molten calf. Paul was lost when he persecuted Jesus and His church. And the parables in today’s Gospel are all about finding things – a sheep, coins, or even a son. But what is God’s reaction? It took a bit of persuading on Moses’ part, but God relented of the punishment He wanted to inflict on the Israelites. Paul is grateful for the merciful treatment he received from God. And a party is called in each of the three parables in the Gospel when what is lost is found again. Friends and family are gathered to celebrate.

God is teaching us that we are all valuable to Him, and that He is overjoyed when the lost return. But He doesn’t keep the joy to Himself. He wants that joy to be shared. Let us share our faith, and call a party to share the joy that occurs when someone who was lost returns to us!

Please join us on September 22 as we start the “Genesis to Jesus” program between the Masses and on Monday nights. 30 minutes, and ALL are welcome to attend.

It is Not Too Late to Join Us!

The Women’s Book Circle is taking the summer off. We will meet the third Thursday in September at 7:00 p.m. (September 19). Our book for September will be The Faith Club by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver, and Priscilla Warner. We have decided it will be best to split the reading up to enable better discussion. For September, please read chapters 1-6. Please join us in September. All are welcome!

Women’s Scripture Circle will be off for the summer months and will resume the fourth Wednesday of September, at 7:00 p.m. (September 25). We will be continuing our study of the Gospel of Luke, part two, using “Little Rock Scripture Study.” Don’t hesitate to join us any time.

For more information on the faith sharing circles, contact Marie Sexton at 718-4147.

Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

VOTING ISSUES –A WELL-FORMED CONSCIENCE:The Church equips its members to address political questions by helping them develop well-formed consciences. Every person is obliged to follow faithfully what he or she knows to be just and right. We Catholics have a lifelong obligation to form our consciences in accord with human reason, enlightened by the teaching of Christ as it comes to us through the Church.

JOIN HOLY FAMILY’S PRISON/JAIL MINISTRYWe gather on a monthly basis with our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 6:00 p.m. We would love to have you visit with us and become a part of our Ministry. We are active at St. Brides Prison in Chesapeake and the Virginia Beach Jail. We also correspond with residents and provide Bibles and Catholic Virginians. With Prison and Jail populations skyrocketing, we also advocate at the state level for changes in laws that will benefi t both the community and incarcerated residents. We also work toward educating both the community and ourselves. This month, we will be airing the video Law Enforcement and People with Mental Illness – Part 1Next meeting Tuesday, September 17, 6:00 p.m.For more information, contact George Horey (757-496-1053 or [email protected]).

WELCOMING THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT in your life this fall. Join others at New Creation Community, 1600 Elbow Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Each session includes praise, worship, a talk, and discussion. The series begins at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, and will continue through early December 2019. Call Gary Hamrick at 757-641-8798 after 7:00 p.m. for more information. Make Pentecost a living reality, and experience the overwhelming love of the Father!

CREATION CARE CORNERI vaguely remember the September to June morning fi re drill: wake up before everyone else, get in the ride or run, shower, dress, wake them up, wake them up again, make breakfast, pack lunches, check bookbags, check soccer practice/after school activities/schedules, get them out the door in time to make the school bus (so I didn’t have to add driving them to school), and get myself to the offi ce before my fi rst meeting.

NEVER ONCE, did the words SUSTAINABILITY, PLASTIC, RENEWABLE, ORGANIC, FOOD WASTE, etc., impact or drive my daily routine. After all, I am a baby boomer. We created this environmental nightmare, creating an industry of environmental abuse.

Fast forward 35-40 years: I can’t imagine what/how parents today deal with balancing the responsibilities of getting through just preparing school/work lunches and providing a daily lifestyle lesson of sustainability (etc.) to family members.

My next month’s “Creation Care Corner” Blog will feature YOUR FAMILY if you will send me a text photo or email of how your family actually manages to make this part of your lifestyle. You can provide a teachable moment, share with your parish faith community, and as Pope Francis asks of us in Laudato Si: Take action or JUST DO IT!
