Weekly Wisdom

Trinity Sunday

This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. As the Catechism explains, the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of the Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God himself. Although this mystery can never be fully understood by man, we believe as the fundamental doctrine of our faith that there is only one God in Whom there are three divine Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All three Persons is true God; there is only one God, not three gods. He is eternal, almighty, omniscient, and incomprehensible. By 1334, Pope John XXII declared Trinity Sunday as a feast on the universal calendar. The timing of the feast immediately after Pentecost is to recall when the doctrine of the Trinity was first proclaimed to the world.

FINANCIAL UPDATE: Because of in-person Mass cancellations and financial uncertainty resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, weekly collections at Church of the Holy Family have been rather unpredictable. To be able to continue paying our staff and keep the church running, we applied for and were granted a short term federal Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan, which provides monies to help pay staff wages and other operating expenses (such as utilities) for a maximum of eight weeks. We are carefully monitoring how we spend this, keeping in mind the restrictions attached to it. We are thankful for this short-term assistance, but even with this money, we are below budget and trust that, with your grateful stewardship, we will be back to normal financial conditions soon.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER:My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

BICENTENNIAL PRAYER

Father of lights, the radiance of your Son has guided the advance of the Gospel across the Diocese of Richmond for two centuries, strengthening our Church from the Eastern Shore to the Cumberland Gap.

Grant that the nearness of your Son may dispel the darkness of our sins,

so that as our love increases more and more,we may dare more than ever to fearlessly proclaim the word.

Holding fast to the word of life, may we shine like stars in the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

2020 Annual Diocesan Appeal:Building Our Family of Faith

In honor of this landmark year for our Diocese,

Bishop Knestout has announced a special Bicentennial Challenge to raise $5 million through this year’s Annual Appeal.

To date, 84 families have donated $33,490.00 toward our goal of $58,760.00, putting us at 56.99% of our target. If you have already made your 2020 Appeal gift, please accept our gratitude for your commitment.

Reaching this challenge will allow the Diocese to fund three key priorities: the education of our youth, care for our elderly poor, and support for our mission parishes. In addition, this success will flow back to all parishes and provide significant boosts to all the ministries supported by the Appeal.

It is with these goals in mind that we hope our

parishioners will join with us this year in making a pledge to the Appeal to help us launch our Diocese into the next 200 years.

“CREATION CARE CORNER”With the pandemic having been, and still is, a major

concern, which occupies our attention, we cannot let our concern for our Earth’s well-being wane. Hopefully, you have maintained your efforts to further educate yourselves about the environment and, also, to continue your important practices to reduce your carbon footprint. Interest in and actions on behalf of curbing the abuse of our Earth need to grow.

This time to challenge ourselves to make some lifestyle changes is critical. When it comes to food we must buy, we need to ask ourselves, “How can we get the greenest, cleanest food with the least waste coming along with it?”

We can plant a vegetable garden (square foot raised gardening is a good way to go). If you are a novice at gardening, check out how to start a vegetable garden on Google. Gardening does require time, but it can be rewarding when you harvest the food you helped produce. Working with the Earth is also a healthy and revitalizing activity. Should you lack appropriate space for a garden, join a community garden or make a garden in a pot (container gardening). Start off small for the first year.

Another way to get the cleanest and greenest food is to buy your food supplies from local farmer markets (there are plenty in Tidewater). “You will skip the entire agricultural supply chain, when you do this, and know exactly what is in your food.” (Green American, Spring, 2020, p. 25)

Speaking of buying food, did you know that the “sell buy” and “ best by” dates on canned goods are not for the consumers? They are for the retailers so they know how long the products have been on the shelves. “Use by” dates mark when the food is at peak quality, not that it has spoiled. Although this pertains to foods we don’t grow or buy at a farmer’s market, it is information to know so as to not throw away edible food.

What food you purchase, where you purchase it and how much you purchase are important keys to ensuring eating the greenest and cleanest food.Ed Marroni – Holy Family Environmental Ministry

PRAYER LINE PHONE TREE MINISTRY: Holy Family has a Prayer Line Ministry which consists

of a phone tree that is used to pass on critical situations which are in need of prayer. If you or a family member or a loved one are in need of prayer, please call the Parish Office at 481-5702, and ask to be put on the Prayer Line Phone Tree. If you would like, please share a little about your critical situation that needs prayer.

If you have asked to be on the Prayer Line Phone Tree and prayers have been answered, let us know so that we can pass on a “Praise Report.”

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.”

Not in picture: more tables & bells with Trish, Linda, Haley, Alison, & Brody ringing since 2018!

The beat goes on….There’s nothing like making music to lift your spirits. Virtual rehearsals and gathering keep us in touch and prepare us for that great day when we all join in song with our Holy Family in our church. Until then…….

Holy Family Ringers: Thursday, Zoom in at 6:15 p.m. ZDT to catch up with each other, pray for Betty together, and see if we can learn a new bell trick.

Parish Choir: See you Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Zoom Time for your virtual rehearsal & chat time & maybe a mystery guest. The St. Cecelia Hymn Sing Along with Sylvia was a huge success! It was fun to see choir members now living in other cities and states, and to sing YOUR favorite songs and hear your reflections on what they mean to you personally.

Children’s Choir & Teen Singers: Every Friday, watch for the Zoom link in your Flocknote Friday Email. Zoom in SUNDAYS at 12:30 p.m. and sing your hearts out! Holy Family Prison Ministry Update

The Holy Family Prison Ministry Committee has been meeting every third Thursday of the month since 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a horrendous effect on the imprisoned population. To lessen this effect several states including Virginia, have established programs to release non-violent prisoners who have served a certain amount of time and have a home plan to return to society.

Our Holy Family Prison Ministry focuses of EDUCATION, ADVOCACY and OUTREACH! EDUCATION

Holy Family Prison ministry often have guest speakers at their meeting.

Committee members share current events and personal experience during meeting.

Lynn Kline and Brother Charles Warthen recently spoke at the diocesan wide webinar on re-entry.

For the past two years, the Dioceses of Richmond has held a Prison Ministry Seminar at the Church of the Holy Family.

ADVOCACY

Committee members advocate for reform in criminal justice to the Commonwealth of Virginia legislature.

The committee has a robust letter writing campaign to legislatures and to inmates. OUTREACH

Pre-COVID 19, committee members held prayer services every fourth Thursday at St. Brides Correctional Center in Chesapeake, VA. Juan Lopez was released from St. Brides on Feb. 14th and has returned to his family in Virginia Beach. Chris Natamoros was also released from St. Brides and was accepted into Onesimus House in Chesapeake and has a landscaping job.

The Prison Ministry has a new re-entry initiative through the Parolees Under Parish Sponsorship (P.U.P.S.) Through the guidance of Brother Charles Warthen and approved by Fr. Rene, the first referral from P.U.P.S. is Charles Norfleet from Buckingham Correctional Center. (see picture) Church of Holy Family parishioners sponsor Charles with two months of rental assistance at a halfway house in Norfolk. Charles is currently seeking employment while getting around on a bicycle donated by a Holy Family Parishioner.

If you wish to help the Holy Family Prison Ministry, please consider joining us on our next Zoom meeting, June 16, 2020 at 7:00 pm. Call George Horey at (757) 496-1053 for more information.
