You will then be able to solve these six problems almostimmediately. EDITOR

COTHERSTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Richard III Talk by Jack & LukeMrs Harding, a local expert on Richard III, came to school

and explained to us all about him. She told us that Barnard Castle wasone of Richard’s favourite castles. He had a crooked spine andShakespeare described him as a hunchback, but she said it didn't stophim from doing things. He could still ride a horse, he was a fantasticsoldier. He gave money to St Mary’s church. He sold his land formoney to give to the church.

School Council Report on Taylor Shaw Visit by Cecily & TiggyFollowing our questionnaire for ideas for Friday snacks, we askedChristine from Taylor Shaw to come in to explain to us about thedifferent healthy options that are available as an alternative to the, notso healthy, flapjack. The School Council had a discussion withChristine about the possibilities. Christine brought in banana breadfor us to taste. The banana bread had bananas of course, cherries andraisins. It was delicious and tasty.Christine also brought in a curry for us to taste. The curry hadcauliflower, brown rice, sauce and vegetables.

Football Report by Tiggy & NathanUnfortunately we lost all the matches. Nathan nearly scored two butone hit the crossbar and the goalkeeper saved the other. It was funanyway and we had a good time. In the first game we nearly had adraw but in the last 30 seconds we played sloppily and they scored agoal.

Eclipse Report by Lauren, Robert & CallumWe brought in a cereal box each and read the instructions to

make a pin-hole viewer so that we could safely watch the eclipse. OnThursday we tested the pin-hole viewers for Friday when the eclipsehappened. The moon moved in front of the sun and blocked the light. The clouds kept going over the sun so you had to be quite lucky to seeit in your pin-hole viewer.

THANK YOU HECTOR!Our Magazine Editor is retiring

Hector Parr has been the Parish Magazine editor since May 2008,and has been responsible for producing no fewer than 79 editions. He hasdone a superb job, working quietly without fuss behind the scenes, andfaithfully meeting the deadlines month after month.

We all dreaded the day when Hector decided to retire from his roleas editor, but that day has come and the June 2015 edition will be the lastedited by him. Hector’s retirement has been well earned. In a typical monthroutine editorial work occupies a couple of days, but on top of that Hectorhas contributed numerous beautifully crafted articles of his own which haveadded hugely to the interest of the publication. We have been treated topieces on vintage cars, astronomy, computers, sound recording, and thehistories of the four church organs in our three villages. His articles couldhave graced the pages of any journal. As an organist Hector has givenrecitals on some of the country's finest organs, including King's CollegeCambridge and Newcastle Cathedral. Since retiring to Teesdale the concertshe has given in St. Romald's have all been well attended and warmlyappreciated.

The people of Baldersdale, Cotherstone, Holwick, Hunderthwaite,Laithkirk, Lunedale, Mickleton, Kelton, and Romaldkirk are served by the“parish” magazine and we all owe Hector a huge debt of gratitude for all hehas done.. Each month (with December and January combined) more than400 copies are distributed by an army of volunteer couriers…… and readersare quick to notice when the latest number is a few days late!

Our Magazine clearly has a valuable part to play in community lifeand in some form or another it is very important to keep it going. It is a greatsource of information, not least on the monthly schedule of church services.Perhaps in future we will have a Benefice-wide publication, but that is forothers to decide. In the meantime Hector has generously offered to help hissuccessor (whoever that might be) settle into the job.

IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED IN TAKING OVER ASMAGAZINE EDITOR, OR IF ANYBODY CAN SUGGESTSOMEBODY WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED, PLEASE MAKEURGENT CONTACT WITH ANY OF THE NAMES ON THE BACKPAGE OF THIS MAGAZINE..

It would be good to be able to acknowledge our editor’s terrificwork at some public occasion, but I doubt whether Hector would permitthat! I hope he will at least allow us to thank him through the pages of hismagazine. Thank you Hector! Gerald Blake

THE CASE FOR BARON HULLOCK

Baron Sir John Hullock was born in Barnard Castle on 3 April 1767, sonof Timothy Hullock a master weaver and timber-yard owner in Barnard Castle andresided at Thorngate House, Barnard Castle. John was called to the bar in May1794 for the northern circuit and was made a serjeant-at-law on 18 June 1816. Hewas appointed a baron of the exchequer on 16 April 1823, and knighted five dayslater. After holding the office of judge for little more than six years he suddenly fellill, and dying at Abingdon on 31 July 1829 aged 65 years, was buried in the familyvault at St Mary’s Parish Church, Newgate, Barnard Castle. His widow Marysurvived him until 18 Nov 1852. Commemorative plaques of their deaths can beviewed in the church porch.

It was recorded on 23 June 1858 in the Teesdale Mercury that Mr SergeantBain, previously an honourable Marshall to the late judge, presented to the town ofBarnard Castle the gift of the above magnificent painting of Baron Hullock in hisred judicial robes. It was placed in the upstairs room of the Witham Hall as a lastingmemento of the judge’s connection with the town of Barnard Castle.

In September 1931 a disgruntled anonymous resident of Barnard Castlecomplained bitterly to the local press that the valuable painting “should be removedfrom its disgraceful and sordid surroundings in the Witham Testimonial Hall” andplaced in the Bowes Museum. “Anonymous” felt that Barnard Castle did notappreciate one of its worthy sons and that it should be given a home in keeping withits worth and where it could be seen by the public. In March 1932 the painting wasrescued and loaned to the Bowes Museum by the Trustees of the WithamTestimonial Hall. Sadly it has remained out of public view ever since, stored in thebasement of Bowes Museum. As the Witham Hall, Barnard Castle, was totallyrestored last year with Heritage Lottery funding, is it time for the magnificentpainting of Baron Hullock to take pride of place again at The Witham? What doresidents think? June Watson

TEESDALE RECORD SOCIETYCotherstone, Monday, April 6th 2015.

The April Meeting of the above Society took place at the MethodistSchool Room commencing at 7.30 pm. The Chairman Mr N.H.Crossformally opened the meeting and thanked everyone for coming. Alsopresent were the Secretary Dr. W.F.Heyes, and the Treasurer Mr R.Jones.The Chairman introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr J.Sewell, who is apast chairman of the Society, whose topic was 'More Churches, Chapels andSchools of Teesdale'.

Mr. Sewel1 began by stating that this was the second part of hisresearch and recording the churches, schools, and chapels of the dale. Onthis occasion he would be looking at those on what was the Yorkshire sideof the dale before the boundary changes. He began his talk at what is thehigh dale downwards to Lartington, taking in Laithkirk, Mickleton,Romaldkirk, Briscoe, Cotherstone, and Lartington. During the course of hisresearch he had come across a document listing those who had contributedto the funding of Lartington school, which was only closed in 1938, butwhich still has a Trust Foundation.

Mr Sewe1l included two images of buildings in Lartington, amongmany shown from those collected. A fine shot of Lartington clock towerwas shown, and mention was made that this stands at the side of the formerschoolmaster's house, with the school room being attached. Another picturewhich Mr. Sewell had got from the internet was captioned Mausoleum1877. This is incorrect, as the picture is in fact of the front entrance to thehall and is called the Porte Cochere, enabling visitors to alight from a horsedrawn carriage, without getting out into the weather. The chairman thankedMr. Sewell for his time in recording, compiling and then presenting hisresults to the Society, for the benefit of the members and those present toenjoy, and was thanked in the usual manner.

The Chairman then informed those present that the annualsubscription to the Society was now due, and remained at £9.00 per year. The new Journal is also available and on sale, and is priced at £5.00, andcontains articles on The Walton family of Bowes, by Anne Hughes,Rev.W.L.Pratmann; A Victorian tragedy, by Eric Barnes; andArchaeological investigation at Wycliffe, by Margaret Manchester.Refreshurents on this occasion were provided by Dr Heyes, and consisted offree tea or coffee and biscuits were McVities hob nobs. The newprogrammes of the Society's meetings for the coming year are also nowavailable, and can be obtained from any officer or committee members ofthe society and when joining or re-newing a membership. If any additionalmeetings need to be arranged these will be notified should the need arise.

The next meeting will be the start of the outdoor season and thesewill be on the 4th of May, 1st of June, 6th of July, 3rd of August and 7th ofSeptember. The next outing will be the 4th of May, and this is a visit to theBrusselton Incline led by Mr Michael O'Neill. Those members andvisitors/readers who would like to come along should assemble outside theFox and Hounds, Cotherstone at 6.30pm, and proceed from there. Neville Cross

TEESDALE MOTHERS' DAY PROJECTThe chaplains at Deerbolt sent 60 Mothers' Day cards on behalf of lads at Deerbolt.

They said that all the lads involved were extremely grateful to be provided with thisopportunity. It also gave the chaplains a chance to engage with many lads who do not attend anyof the Christian services at the prison and to explain why complete strangers would dosomething like this for them. All part of sowing seeds for the future!

It was also of great benefit to the mums involved, many of whom are distressed by theseparation from their son that results from a prison sentence. Having a written card suddenlyarrive on this special day is a great lift for them and is something that they can re-read inmoments of sadness. So this really is the “gift that keeps on giving”.

For the lads, the fact that they write something down means they think more aboutwhat they want to say and maybe gives them the opportunity to say things they wouldn’t be ableto say over the phone. This all helps with building bridges and re-establishing contact with theirmums, which is so important when looking forward to successfully returning to the communityat the end of their sentence.

Throughout the Dale, the response to the Angel Tree Mothers Day project has beenvery positive, with people feeling it was a very worthwhile cause. This and their generousdonations should be a cause of great joy to all of us who live in this area, for not only is it one ofthe most beautiful areas to live, but this shows that it must also be one of the most caring too.

Thank you again for your support. Andrew Heron Group Leader, Prison Fellowship Teesdale

PRINCESS SALLY AND PRINCESS SELINA"Well," said Princess Sally, "we must look at the walls and sides of gates,

and let us do this now to find a lever or button or bell to open the gate or wall. Nowwe will each take a small piece of wall or gate and look for something unusual. Offwe go. We will try to take only a little piece at a time, Tommy and Syd lookingaround the bottom, Sophie looking in all the unusual places, Princess Sally andSelina looking up." "What about something on the ground near a wall?" saidTommy to Syd. "Well you look down," said Syd, "and I will look up." As it wasstill light they started to walk. It was not easy on all the broken twigs and leaves, butthey all were very keen to find a way. All of a sudden Sophie shouted, "Is thisanything?" Tommy and Syd were in front and they heard Sophie and came back. Avery small iron pull was sticking out of the wall. Syd and Tommy bent down tohave a look, touched it, and it just fell off the wall. "Sorry!" said Sophie, "off we goagain." The two Princesses were in front and up to now nothing had been found. They thought they could hear noises from within, but the walls were very thick andthey were not sure. "What shall we do next?" they said when everyone had caughtup to them. "Shall we go back to the Den, then home to Mother and have our tea?"So they did just that.

Next morning they were awake quite early. Mother was getting theirbreakfast ready, and after that they would go to the Den. In the meantime Mr. andMrs. Mole and family had returned from holiday and were waiting for the PussyCat family. Also at that moment the Princesses and Tommy and Syd and Sophiewere having a meeting and wondering whether they should go back to the Den, andthey all agreed on that. What a surprise they got when Mr. and Mrs. Mole andfamily were waiting to greet them! They went into a huddle, talking, and all veryexcited, wanting to give all the news they had missed.
