5th African economy by GDP 2nd most competitive economy in North Africa behind Tunisia. “ African Competitiveness Report 2009 ” Morocco was ranked the 1st African country. “Economist Intelligence Unit ” GDP : $171 billion (2012) GDP by sector (2012) :

agriculture : 17.1% industry : 31.6% services : 51.4%

External export : $14.49 billion (2010)

AGRICULTURE Land :

Achievement of self-sufficiency in food production. Production of two-thirds of the grains (wheat, barley,

and corn) needed for domestic consumption. Production of commercial crops (cotton, sugarcane,

sugar beets, and sunflowers). Exportation of citrus fruits and early vegetables to

the European market. Development of its irrigation potential (that

ultimately will irrigate more than 1 million hectares).

Cereals constitute the essential of the agricultural value added.

Their production is very sensitive to rain falls.Cereal yields determine the economic growth in

Morocco is ranked among the world's largest producers and exporters of cannabis. Its cultivation and sale provide the economic base for much of northern Morocco. At about 1340 km² in Morocco's five northern provinces.

and handicrafts (carpets and brass, copper, silver, and wood implements).

The IT sector generated a turnover of Dh7 billion ($910,000m) in 2007.

A low penetration rate (21%) presents a challenge for the development of e-commerce.

Science and technology in Morocco has significantly developed in recent years. The Moroccan government has been implementing reforms to encourage scientific research in the Kingdom.

However, the greatest gap at that point of time lied in the link between research and innovation.

While the Moroccan telecoms market remains under-saturated, its three mobile operators have experienced robust growth in recent years, both at home and abroad.

Telecommunications sector

The telecoms sector increased in value from Dh25.6 billion ($3.3 billion) in 2006 to Dh33.3 billion ($4.2 billion) in the recent years.

the sector should employ 125,000 people and contribute 10% of GDP.

With the penetration rates of 69.4% from mobile phones and 8.95% for fixed lines, the Moroccan telecoms industry is set to continue to grow.
