The Mausoleum of Mohammed V is
considered a masterpiece of
modern Alaouite dynasty
architecture, with its white silhouette,
topped by a typical green tiled roof, green being the color of Islam.
The Mausoleum of His Majesty Mohammed V is a clear celebration of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship
The original mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat, designed by a Vietnamese architect, who was trained both in Vietnam and in France, houses the remains of Kings Mohammed V, Hassan II, and Prince Moulay Abdellah
Zellige is terra cotta tilework covered with enamel in the
form of chips set into plaster. This form of Islamic art is one of the
main characteristics of
Moroccan architecture
His Majesty Mohamed V ruled over Morocco for two terms. The first was from the year 1927 to 1953 (as Sultan) and again from 1957 to the year 1961 (as King). He is remembered and noted for his efforts in the fight for Morocco's independence. Both his sons, King Hassan II and Prince Abdallah, were buried alongside him. It took the hard work of approximately four hundred men to build and complete the mausoleum that now stands as an architectural and historical masterpiece. It is both a tomb and a mosque and the Mohamed V Mausoleum is one of the few holy places that are open to the public
The museum of the complex
The mausoleum overlooks the ruins of the Hassan Mosque, built by the Almohad Sultan Yacoub el Mansour (Almohad dynasty) at the end of the 12th century.
