Morphology of the Folktale – Expanded List of Functions Compiled and Edited by Nick Xylas INTRODUCTION What follows is an expanded version of the list of functions contained in Vladimir Propp’s Morphology of the Folktale (translated into English by Louis A Wagner) matched, to the best of my ability, with the relevant passages from The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev: Volume I, (translated by Jack V Haney and published by the University Press of Mississippi). Some symbols are not represented in Appendix III of Propp, Schemes and Commentaries, and so are taken from Chapter III, The Functions of Dramatis Personae. Where the tale is not featured in Volume I of Afanas’ev & Haney, which features tales numbered 1-178, and is the only volume published at the time of writing this, I have quoted directly from Propp & Wagner. Such quotes are presented in Courier New font in order to distinguish them from the rest of the text. Most of these examples are indirect quotations, which I have placed in italics in order to distinguish them from the few direct quotations from the tales. Connectives and trebling are not represented in Appendix III; they are likewise omitted here. The same is true of the preparatory section, though some examples are given in Chapter III. Also, the examples given for functions M and N (difficult task and solution) are so numerous that it would have been too time-consuming to reproduce them all, so I have just included the ones featured in the tables in Appendix III. I refer you to Chapter III of Propp for the full list. Negative functions are represented by adding (neg.) at the end. Since the same paragraph, or even sentence, can cover more than one function, a certain amount of duplication in the text is unavoidable. Where a function appears more than once within the same move of the same tale in separate incidents, I have reproduced them as a numbered list, like so: 1) The first example. 2) The second example.

Morphology of the Folktale Expanded List of FunctionsCompiled and Edited by Nick XylasINTRODUCTIONWhat follows is an expanded version of the list of functions contained in Vladimir Propps Morphology of the Folktale (translated into English by Louis A Wagner) matched, to the best of my ability, with the relevant passages from The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanasev: Volume I, (translated by Jack V Haney and published by the University Press of Mississippi). Some symbols are not represented in Appendix III of Propp, Schemes and Commentaries, and so are taken from Chapter III, The Functions of Dramatis Personae. Where the tale is not featured in Volume I of Afanasev & Haney, which features tales numbered 1-178, and is the only volume published at the time of writing this, I have quoted directly from Propp & Wagner. Negative functions are represented by adding (neg.) at the end.Since the same paragraph, or even sentence, can cover more than one function, a certain amount of duplication in the text is unavoidable. Where a function appears more than once within the same move of the same tale in separate incidents, I have reproduced them as a numbered list, like so:1) The first example.2) The second example. However, when they involve simple repetition (eg the hero slays a three- then a six- then a twelve-headed dragon), I have only reprinted one instance in order to save space. As Wagner mentions in his footnotes, there are several transcription errors, meaning that the schemes of the tales as presented do not always correspond to the symbols used in Propp. In such cases, I have merely guessed at what Propp meant. If you think my guesses are wrong, feel free to modify this document. I hope nonetheless that it will be of some use to students of folklore and/or story structure.Nick XylasSpring 2015

00 initial situation ()The Witch and the Suns Sister (93 move I)In a certain tsardom, in a far off land, there lived and dwelt a tsar and his tsaritsa, and they had a son, Ivan Tsarevich, who had been unable to speak since birthFrost (95 Move I)There lived an old man and an old woman. They had three daughters. The oldwoman didnt like the eldest daughter (she was a stepdaughter), often reprovingher, waking her early, and making her do all the work. The girl fed and watered thestock, carried the wood and water into the hut, heated up the stove, made the festive costumes, swept the hut, and cleared everything up before sunrise. But the oldwoman was still dissatisfied with her, and she scolded Marfusha: Youre so lazy, youre such a sloven! And the grate isnt quite right and isnt standing there properly, and theres filth everywhere in the hut. The girl remained silent and wept. Shetried every which way to please her stepmother and serve the other daughters, butthe sisters, just like their mother, insulted Marfusha all the time and quarreled withher and made her cry. They really liked that! They always got up late, washed in thewater already fetched for them, dried themselves with a clean towel, and sat downto work only when they had dined. So our maids grew and grew, and they grew upand became ready to marry. Now soon a tale is told, but not so soon is a deeddone. The old man felt sorry for the eldest daughter. He loved her because she wasobedient and hard-working, never resisted what she was told to do, never spokeback, and the old man didnt know how to assuage his grief. I am dying andam leaving you my mothers blessing and this doll. Always keep it with you and show it to no one. And when some misfortune befalls you, give the doll somethingto eat and ask its advice. Go throughout your villageand collect an egg from every household, and put the eggs to a setting hen. Whatwill happen youll see for yourself! The old man returned to the village. In that village there were forty-one households. He went to each household and collected an egg from each, and set a henon the forty-one eggs. Two weeks passed, and the old man looked and the oldwoman looked toofrom each of those eggs a little boy was born. Forty of themwere strong and healthy, but the forty-first had no such luck: He was skinny andweak! The old man gave out names to the boys. He gave them to each, but hedidnt have a name for the last one. Well, he said. Let him be Midget. The old folks children grew, they grew not by the day, but by the hour. One of them lived somehow, striking out with every sort ofinjustice, capable, you see, of deceits, and thieving was his main occupation. Andthe other one, just listen, followed the path of truth, living out his days in labor. And because of this they argued.
