Dear Morris Brandon Families, Administration, Teachers, Staff and Friends,

Morris Brandon is indeed the ‘place to BEE’, but it wouldn’t be without the incredible support we receive from our parents, teach-ers, administration and staff. As President of the Morris Brandon Elementary School Foundation (MBESF), I have the privilege of witnessing that support and its impact first hand. The financial resources, volunteer hours and talents so freely given to Morris Brandon make it a truly wonderful educational experience for our children.

As a community, Morris Brandon has high expectations…of our children, our teachers, and our school environment. If not for the generous financial support of the Morris Brandon community through donations to the MBESF, we could not offer the world-class education and ‘Morris Brandon Experience’ we have come to ex-pect for our children. This annual report details the programs and initiatives funded by your donations to the MBESF. I hope you will be as proud as I am of the incredible things your contributions pro-vided this year for our children, teachers, and school. It couldn’t happen without you.

On behalf of the Morris Brandon community, thank you for your generous support of the MBESF.

Sincerely,

Amy ReavisFoundation President

About the Morris Brandon Elementary School Foundation, Inc.Formed in 2006, the Morris Brandon Elementary School Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and enriching the education and development of Brandon’s students. By funding curriculum, programs and facilities not paid for by the Atlanta Public Schools system, the Foundation helps ensure that our students receive a first-rate education -- at one of the top rated public schools in Georgia. In 2012-13, MBESF funded over $250,000 in curriculum, pro-grams and facilities unique to Brandon. For 2013-14, MBESF anticipates funding at least the same amount on these items – items that enrich the educational experience of every child at Brandon.

“Diligence is the mother of good fortune.”

-Benjamin Disraeli

At Morris Brandon Elementary School (MBES), we are indeed very fortunate. We have a talented staff and committed parents who work each year to create an environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive. Our parent volunteers, through hard work and personal sacrifice, earn hundreds of thou-sands of dollars annually for the MBES Foundation. These dollars were used this year to support the physical grounds at each campus, afford teachers with valuable professional devel-opment, supplement instructional programs with quality resources, and provide technology to sup-port classroom instruction. The MBES Foundation Board, a group of parent volunteers, is charged with the oversight and stewardship of these funds.

I am deeply grateful to the volunteers who serve on our foundation board each year. As board members, your skill-ful oversight of our financial resources has enhanced the educational experience for all of our students. I am also thankful to the countless patrons who do-nate to Morris Brandon gener-ously and sacrificially each year. Many, many thanks to all of you for your diligence toward Bran-don’s good fortune!

Sincerely,

Your Principal Karen Evans

During the past academic year, the MBESF operating budget funded many items that resulted in very tangible benefits to our students, faculty, staff and community.

Art, Music, PE, Media Center and French $27,000

Due to cuts in state and Atlanta Public Schools budgets, MBESF provided funding to pay for the majority of supplies used in Brandon’s art, music and French instruction. The Foundation also provided a sizeable allotments to supplement the PE program and Media Center.

Campus Maintenance, Interior and Outdoor Improvements $64,000

Through funding from the MBESF and our partnership with Northside Methodist Church Sports and Recreation department, we are able to maintain the Brandon Backyard and Primary Center playground as safe and enjoyable environments for our students, families and community. This includes maintenance of the turf fields and rubberized playground surfaces, as well as repairs to the PC basketball court, and other related items. The MBESF also funded needed interior items such as instructional rugs for our PC classrooms and backpack wall hooks outside every classroom on both campuses. This helps with hallway safety and keeps our classrooms free from clutter and distraction.

Faculty and Staff Allotments $26,000

MBESF provides a cash allotment to each classroom teacher, as well as certain specialists and administrators. The recipients have discretion to use these funds in the way that best augments their educational objectives for the year. These allotments are generally used to purchase additional curriculum materials and supplies.

International Baccalaureate $10,000

Morris Brandon adopted the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme to help our students achieve personal, social, intellectual and emotional growth using a unique framework consisting of study units, student behaviors and attitudes. Through IB, our students learn to understand differences and accept all perspectives. They learn to ask challenging questions and to develop research skills. IB fosters the importance of community service, and our students learn tolerance, respect and cooperation. The IB Programme enhances all that Morris Brandon offers to our students. MBESF funds Brandon’s IB Programme in its entirety. This funding pays for all required IB training for all teachers and staff, as well as certain additional training that enhances our IB Primary Years Programme.

Personnel $45,500

Through grants from MBESF, Morris Brandon is able to employ additional teaching assistants and staff. These positions are not funded by APS, but add tremendous safety and other benefits to our families.

Professional Development $11,500

Through funding provided by MBESF, all classroom teachers participated in the Complete Reading Series by Brenda Fitzgerald. The training has taken place over the course of two school years to ensure all teachers can attend each session. This training is regarded as the premier professional development program in all reading skills areas, such as decoding, phonics, phonetic awareness, reading comprehension, concept retention, language fluency and vocabulary. This training also provides our teachers with tools to assess student progress in all these areas as well.

Professional Development (cont’d)

In addition, the MBESF provided funding for several professional development opportunities such as the Georgia School Counselors Association, the Southern Region Dimensions of Dyslexia conference and representation at the National Association for Education of Young Children conference. The Foundation requires any teacher attending a conference to report back to their grade level or the entire staff as appropriate, to share the content and relate relevant knowledge gained. We feel these programs and conferences ensure our teachers remain engaged, stay current, and feel valued.

Shurley English Curriculum $21,000

Shurley English is a dynamic and rigorous complete grammar and writing curriculum that brings back student-teacher interaction, promotes higher-order thinking skills, and provides measurable academic achievement. The faculty at Morris Brandon researched this curriculum and found that it would fill a need in our children’s education. The MBESF was fully supportive and funded this program for our upper grades, where it is deemed most impactful.

Subscriptions and Curriculum Supplements $10,500

MBESF funds many valuable subscription and curriculum supplements used by our students on a daily basis. The subscriptions benefit every grade level in a variety of subjects. Besides offering our children different and interactive ways to learn, these tools often provide valuable assessment data to our teachers as well.

Technology and Audio Visual Improvements $30,000

Over the last two years the MBESF has ensured that every classroom on both campuses has an interactive whiteboard. The IWB is a large interactive display that combines the simplicity of a whiteboard, the power of a computer and front projection, allowing students to engage with video and audio features, vivid images and interactive components that enhance the 21st century learning experience. This year MBESF also funded specific white board training for our teachers to ensure they can maximize the use of these assets. Additionally the Foundation funded new microphones and speakers for in-house performances, as well as upgrades to our portable speaker system.

Website Refresh $6,000

After ten years on our current platform, there was a dire need to update our school website. MBESF funded $12,000 to cover this critical expense. The second installment will be paid with 2013-14 funds. This re-fresh (currently under construction) will allow better functionality and navigation for parents and teachers, as well as aid in on-line payments. The update will also ensure greater compatibility with key functions and technology already used by the school.

Thank you!

The Morris Brandon Foundation helps provide the superb educational experience that our children receive. Whether through support for the IB curriculum, classroom technology and supplies, support staff, or additional art, music, and PE teachers, it is that extra funding boost from the Foundation that helps make Brandon truly special. Consider whether we would still have the same high quality choice and

unique environment at Brandon without this support. When I think about the high cost of private elementary school tuition, a donation of 5-10% of that potential cost is more than worth it. If your employer is willing to match donations, please take

advantage of that program to double your impact.

Stephanie & David Aferiat

Dear Morris Brandon Foundation,

I would like to thank you on behalf of the PE staff for supporting the Morris Brandon PE Pro-gram. Over the past year the MBESF has sup-ported the health and fitness of Morris Brandon students by helping to provide Digi-walkers, up-per body strength stations, jump ropes, volley-balls, badminton rackets and various equipment for Opening Ceremonies and Field Day activi-ties. The most important item that the MBESF funds is the PE assistant position. The PE assis-tant position provides for more students to have Physical Education in a safe environment.

This year the MBESF also repaired the gym speakers, installed microphone jacks for choral mics, and repaired the small portable PA sys-tem. All of these items have a direct impact on the students of Morris Brandon.

New for next year, will be student responders which will be used to answer questions from assessments. These responses will give me bet-ter feedback as to how well my students un-derstand the concepts being taught and allow for more efficient assessment and better use of class time.

Again I would like to thank the MBESF for supporting the PE program. One thing that sets this school apart from other schools is the strength and commitment of the Foundation and the PTA that strives to provide the very best for all students at Morris Brandon. I am looking forward to a healthy new school year.

Thank you,

Joan WymanPE Teacher NBCMorris Brandon Elementary School
