AMNEZIYAJoseph Kosuth

MAMM presents the ever first solo exhibition in Russia of Joseph Kosuth, an impor-tant pioneer of conceptual art.

Featuring work that dates from 1965 through to 2011, “Amneziya” offers an exten-sive overview of Joseph Ko-suth’s oeuvre in neon.

The show chronicles an al-most 50-year investigation into the role of language and meaning in art, as well as Ko-suth’s enduring use of neon, which he first developed as a medium in the 1960s (preceding Bruce Nauman, Mario Merz and Keith Son-nier, for example), when Ko-suth considered the medium a form of “public writing”, without fine art associations.

The exhibition will feature 25 of Kosuth’s neon works, in-cluding one of the artist’s first neons Five Fives (to Donald Judd) [orange] (1965), along-side recent works such as three from his Beckett series (2011). “Amneziya” follows “Insomnia”: Assorted, Illumi-nated, Fixed.’ and ‘Amnesia: Various, Luminous, Fixed.’, comprehensive exhibitions of neon work by the artist shown at Sprüth Magers in Berlin and London in 2013–2014.

In the 1960s Kosuth initiat-ed appropriation strategies, language-based works and the use of photography.

The artist characteristically develops his investigations into language and percep-tion through the use of se-ries, a format that opens up space for play and reflexivity in multiple directions.

In the celebrated Freud se-ries (1981-1989), Kosuth re-positions and reflects on the meanings employed in psychoanalyst’s texts with pieces and installations.

Fetishism (Corrected) (1988), for instance, consists of an enlarged reproduction, com-plete with corrections by Freud’s hand, of the opening page proof of the essay “Fe-tischismus”. Kosuth extricates the cor-rections, converting them into cobalt blue neon and mounting them together on the wall around the framed proof, highlighting how writ-ing is studied and converted into artefacts, and from arte-facts to art. Three works from the re-cent Beckett series (2011) will also be exhibited. Fab-ricated in warm white neon with the facing side dipped in black paint, Kosuth uses fragments from two of Beck-ett’s works: the renowned Waiting for Godot and the lesser-known Texts for Noth-ing.

The playwright and artist share an interest in how lan-guage can conceal and re-veal meaning in the act of constructing new meaning; while Beckett approaches the question of meaning by

investigating its absence, or the impossibility of meaning revealing itself through lan-guage, Kosuth asserts its presence by posing ques-tions about how meaning is produced, by both artist and viewer.

Joseph Kosuth lives and works in New York and Lon-don.

He has participated at nu-merous Documentas and Venice Biennales, and his work is included in most mu-seum collections in the US, Europe, Australia and Asia.

In 2001 he received the Lau-rea Honoris Causa doctorate in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Bolo-gna and in 2003 the Austrian Republic’s highest honour for accomplishments in sci-ence and culture, the Deco-ration of Honour in Gold.

In 2012 Kosuth was induct-ed into the Académie Royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Kosuth’s exhibition entitled ni apparence ni illusion, an installation work throughout the twelfth- century walls of the original Louvre Pal-ace, opened at the Musée du Louvre, Paris in 2009, and became a permanent work in 2014. His work on the façade of the Council of State of the Netherlands was unveiled in October 2011 and he is preparing a permanent work for the four towers of the façade of the Bibliotheque Nationale in

Paris, planned for 2015. Recent exhibitions include “(Waiting for -) Texts for Nothing” Samuel Beckett, in play, at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Mel-bourne (2010) and — in an extended version — at the Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich (2011). His most recent exhi-bition is Sigmund Freud and The Play on the Burden of Representation, 21er Haus, Belvedere Museum, in co-operation with the Sigmund Freud Museum, both Vien-na. The exhibition acknowl-edges the 75th anniversary of the death of Freud.

Herb Ritts began his pho-tographic career in the late 70’s and gained a reputation as a master of art and com-mercial photography. In ad-dition to producing portraits and editorial fashion for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview and Rolling Stone, Ritts also created successful adver-tising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, Gap, Gianfranco Ferré, Gi-anni Versace, Giorgio Arma-ni, Levi’s, Pirelli, Polo Ralph Lauren, Valentino among others. Since 1988 he di-rected numerous influential and award winning music videos and commercials. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibi-tions worldwide, with works residing in many significant public and private collec-tions.

In his life and work, Herb Ritts was drawn to clean lines and strong forms. This graphic simplicity allowed his images to be read and felt instantaneously. They often challenged conven-tional notions of gender or race. Social history and fan-tasy were both captured and created by his memorable photographs of noted indi-viduals in film, fashion, mu-sic, politics and society.

Ritts was committed to HIV/AIDS related causes, and contributed to many chari-table organizations, among them amfAR, Elizabeth Tay-lor AIDS Foundation, Project Angel Food, Focus on AIDS, APLA, Best Buddie

s and Special Olympics . He was also a charter member on the Board of Directors for The Elton John Aids Foun-dation.

Herb Ritts passed away on December 26th, 2002.

The concert “Sounds of the Uni-verse: Organ & Marimba”

It is difficult to find words to describe how extraordinary is the impression that pits a combination of organ and marimba sounds. The first - the king of instruments, powerful voice which en-tered into a symphonic or-chestra, the second - one of the most mysterious characters of classical mu-sic, whose wonderful, mys-tical tone attached to any particular product, unique sound.

In the performance of or-gan and marimba duo even familiar works transformed and opened up new sound-scapes. Old music seems surprisingly modern and carries a completely differ-ent, a fantastic sound world.

The magic of the music will be showed by two great mu-sicians, winners of interna-tional competitions: Fyodor Stroganov (organ) and Peter Glavatskih (ma-rimba).

In their interpretation, will feature works by compos-ers of the Baroque époque (Bach, Handel, Rameau, Dowland), as well as several works by Fyodor Stroganov created for this unique duo.

The Marimba is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wood-en bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones.

Resonators attached to the bars amplify their sound.

The bars are arranged as those of a piano, with the accidentals raised vertically and overlapping the natu-ral bars (similar to a piano) to aid the performer both visually and physically.

This instrument is a type of idiophone, but with a more resonant and lower-pitched tessitura than the xylo-phone.

The chromatic marimba was developed in Chiapas, Mex-ico from the local diaton-ic marimba, an instrument whose ancestor was a type of balafon that African slaves built in Central America.

Modern uses of the ma-rimba include solo perfor-mances, woodwind and brass ensembles, marimba concertos, jazz ensembles, marching band (front en-sembles), drum and bugle corps, and orchestral com-positions.

Contemporary composers have used the unique sound of the marimba more and more in recent years.
