Red Rose:— Newsletter j 0 *

I f

Enough has been said within the Programme about our disastrous weekend at Middlesex. Apart from us finding yet more good players through our Super League structure in Mike Chadwick, Mick Smith and Alan Tabern who all won on their debut's in the Men's 'B' Team. 8-4 victory. We have not got a lot to shout about. Chico McQueen, Pat Connaughton and new boy Pete Chadwick won the Best Player Awards in their respective teams. So I am going to write a little about our Embassy Gold Cup ladies and mens individuals and play-offs staged here at Ocean Edge recently, we bit off more than we could chew running the mens and ladies on one weekend, next year we must strongly consider playing them as separate events. The eventual winners were:- in the mens championships, Alan Warriner who qualified for the second year as the individual winner beating Tony Benson in the final, Paul Reynolds again qualified but jwith a new partner Steve Cusick as the pairs champions beating Ronnie Peel and Geoff Diamond. In the final of the ladies championship Pat Connaughton beat Chris Butterworth to become the individual winner and Pat with Sue Corry beat Sandra Woof and Pauline Grounds to represent us in the pairs. All the winners and runners up will receive prize money at the presentation of awards here at Ocean Edge on June 4th 1988. The international played at the Guild Hall was another successful event for two of those same players, Alan Warriner on his England Debut all but won the Man Of The Match Award with a Brilliant 3-1 win over Peter Locke scoring 100-35 every three darts, Paul Reynolds also won his game with a convincing 3-1 victory averaging 87-96 every three darts in Englands 13-2 defeat of Wales.

'Oh' I almost forgot — welcome to our new recruit onto the Executive Committee former Morecambe Super League Delegate Jock McCready. Sorry Jock, but I should imagine most people already know your on the committee as you took up such a lot of space on the telly at Oldham. Best of luck to everyone involved in this weekends championship match, we can expect some fabulous games from our London visitors, currently holding top spot in the Mens Premier Division League Table. But listen to the words of Geoffs favourite recording and who knows they could prove to be right, its all on the day, surely we can't play as badly as we did at Middlesex. And in our favour is we have only lost one Mens 'A ' Match here at Ocean Edge in three seasons and that was 7-5 to last year champions Surrey. See you at the bar!

Super League News Tommy Thompson Super League Secretary

We are now beginning a new chapter in improving our communications between the committee and all our Super Leagues. As most of our members know, the Super League is the blood of our County, and we are probably unique in the rules which apply, in so much as any player selected to play County darts has to play Super League darts, not in the same way as many counties do, where they have to play odd games now and then, but continuation of County selection depends upon fulfilling Super League commitments throughout the season. We select players for County appearances on their Super League averages, which I am glad to say are now computerised, making it possbible to have a virtual immediate recall on players form. Due to the computerised bank of players statistics, we have this season brought in a ranking system for our County, where the players Super League average will be counted together with points gained in the Gold Cup Singles, World Masters, North West Open, Lancashire May Day Open, Plus 1 point for a Super League win, 2 for a County " B " win and 3 for a County " A " win. What a breathtaking prospect this is, as for the first time it will determine beyond any doubt the finest players in our County. At the moment Alan Warriner, last years winner, again leads the Mens Super League averages, with an average of 83.28 from his team mate from Lancaster Ronnie Peel with an average of 82.14. In the ladies, Sue Corry from Royton, is well on course to lifting the title with a tremendous average of 66 .71 . Just before I finish, a special mention to two of our top Premier Division Super League teams St. Helens and Bolton. In the last match St. Helens won the game by 7-3, but what was even more relevant was the team averages of the two sides. St. Helens 78.82 and Bolton ^ 6 . 5 1 , with such averages they would both have beaten many County " A " teams outside the Premier Division. The future again looks very rosey. Tommy Thompson.

T h r o u g h t h e Mike — J o h n G w y n n e Darts is a team game but played by individuals. Nothing revolutionary about that statement! Although it is also an individual game played by individuals just as much; that's when k.o. competitions rather than pub, super-league or county matches hold their sway. But if ever there was proof of playing for a team as a team, it's with us this weekend

Remember the London of not so long ago? It boasted Bristow and Lazarenko; it boasted Deller and O'Dea. World renowed players whom the masses would flock to see. Yes, it had other players of high repute but the big four were +he backbone of the team. Or so many of us thought.

Because today London stand in a healthy position, poised to take the Inter-Counties title and that without the super-stars of yesteryear. With great respect to the likes of fine players like Bobby Semple, Clive Pearce and Dave Lee few expected a team from the capital minus the 'big names' to make as much impact on the title race as they have. Which is all the more credit to the entire London set-up. They are, indeed, proving the fact that darts is very much a team game. Not that we in Lancashire need proof. Ours is, and always has been, a team bereft of the really big names; but who can say that we have been anything other than a well-respected and formidable opponent to whomever we've come across? Which leads me on the point that this weekend should provide us with games of great interest. Both counties comprise players with no mean amount of ability; but just as abundant — and this is what makes up for missing big names — is the amount of character which they possess. Following the disappointing results at Middlesex (also Londoners with 'character'), we have to really show what we're made of and what better way to do it than to beat a side of London's calibre? A couple of our players have taken giant steps towards stardom recently, Alan Warriner having been selected to represent England for the first time and Paul Reynolds, already an international, having gone so well in the Embassy World championships. Such was the quality of Paul's play in front of millions of viewers that his is already becoming a household name even among passive darts fans. Whichever team you are playing tor or supporting this weekend, I hope you get the pleasure that this fixture has produced over the years. And don't forget: the better the order you give, the better the players will perform ...game on!
