Species of Mosquitoes
There are over 2500 species all over the world. It
act as vectors for many diseases . Female only bite and suck blood but male not
bite and feed on nectars of flowers.
LIFECYCLE : It has Complete metamorphosis.
Duration : Egg - 1- 4 days , Larva - 7 days
Pupa - 2-3 days , Adult - 10 -14 days.
Larvae called “Wrigglers” . Pupa called “tumblers” .
ANOPHELES : Greyish in color . Breed in flowing water.
Active during dawn and dusk.
Egg lie parallel to surface.
Egg laid singly.
It transmits Malaria , Filariasis.
CULEX : Uniform grey in color .
Hibernate during winter and active during warm seasons .
Active at night .
Egg laid in rafts in standing water.
It transmits west Nile disease , filariasis
and Japanese encephalitis .
AEDES : Blackish brown with silver stripes .
Active during day and night .
Painful and persistent biters .
Egg laid singly in moist soil and containers .
It transmits Yellow fever, Dengue fever, Filariasis.
