FACULTY
Prof. Dr. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Baum has assembled a team of distinguished faculty member from leading HPE experts in the USA and Europe. This includes some past faculty members from the EMP 201 short courses, as well as some new blood. Faculty team members are:
CARL E. BAUM received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from Caltech. He was awarded an honorary Dr.-Ing. E.h. degree from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany in 2004. He was stationed at the Air Force Research Labo-ratory, Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM, from 1963 to 1967 and from 1968 to 1971. From 1971-2005 he had served as a civil servant with a position as Senior Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory. Since 2005 he has been a distinguished research professor at the University of New Mexico, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
He has been awarded the Air Force Research and Development Award (1970), the AFSC Harold Brown Award (1990), and Air Force Research Laboratory Fellow (1996). He is editor of several interagency note series on EMP (electromagnetic pulse) and related subjects and has received (1984) the Richard R. Stoddart award of the IEEE EMC Society and (2006) the John Kraus Antenna Award of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, and is recipient of the 1987 Harry Diamond Memorial Award, one of the IEEE Field Awards, with citation “for out¬standing contributions to the knowledge of transient phenomena in electromagnetics,” and is recipient of the 2007 IEEE Electromagnetics Field Award with citation, “for contributions to fundamental principles and techniques in electromagnetics.”
Detailed biographies of all the faculty team members are provided on http://www.montena.com/montenaemc/pdf/hpe_201_2009_flyer.pdf
INTENT This course is designed to familiarize students who have a good electromagnetics background with fundamentals of HPE, including sources, interaction, effects, and hardening.
INTRODUCTION The EMP course, entitled EMP Interaction and Hardening (EMP 201) was first held at New Mexico Tech in Socorro NM in 1983. Since then, there have been 7 EMP-201 short courses offered in:
Nottingham, England(1984); Karmiel, Israel (1987);Interlaken, Switzerland (1985); Ann Arbor, MI (1988);Socorro, NM (1985); andYxnerum, Sweden (1986); Bangalore, India (1989).
The short course was well received for both its contents and the way it was conducted. Since then the world has changed, and with this the course material also needs to change. The subject matter is now high-power electromag-netics (HPE) with emphasis on the environments from high-power microwaves (HPM) extending through high-power impulses (BPI). HPE-201 has been offered:
Socorro, NM (2003) Bonascre-Aix les Thermes, France (1987);Cheju, South Korea (2005)
Dr. Baum, USA (Course Director)Dr. Giri, USA
Dr. Gardner, USADr. Parmantier, France
Dr. Bohl, Germany
