struggled to sustain subscriber growth. Thenthere’s Occidental Petroleum Corp., whichlost its spot as the largest local company amiddeclining oil prices.

But the meager growth in market capital-ization tells only part of the story. Stack upthe market cap of the 175 companies on thisyear’s list against the companies on last year’slist and the combined capitalization actuallyfell 3.4 percent.

That’s largely because giant NorthropGrumman Corp. – No. 6 on last year’s listwith $19.3 billion in market cap – relocated itsheadquarters to Falls Church, Va., and wasreplaced on the list. It was yet another exampleof Los Angeles losing a Fortune 500 company.

“These companies with huge market caps, they have facilities spread around the nationand the globe,” Anh said. “With California’sbusiness climate considered so unfriendly tobusiness and likely to remain so for the fore-seeable future, these companies repeatedly askthemselves why they are headquartered here.”

Market volatilityIn many years, the loss of a Northrop

would be offset by a healthy dose of newpublic companies. But not this year. Thanksto the volatility of the markets over the pastyear, only four initial public offerings wentforward and they added less than $7 billion inmarket capitalization. The largest of these wasdowntown L.A.’s Oaktree Capital GroupLLC, which added $5.2 billion in marketcapitalization to the list.

Several companies filed for IPOs, butdidn’t pull the trigger and go to market. Mostprominent among these was aircraft leasinggiant International Lease Finance Corp.,which filed for an IPO last summer. If andwhen the Century City company goes to mar-ket, it’s expected to have a market cap of $8billion to $10 billion.

Despite the difficult market, Disney’sstock rose 18 percent to close June 29 at$86.7 billion. That $13 billion gain in marketcap was the largest on this year’s list andpowered the Burbank entertainment giant pastOccidental into the No. 1 spot.

“Disney shares have appreciated as theimprovement in the economy boosted atten-dance and per-capita spending at its themeparks,” said David Joyce, an analyst with

Miller Tabak & Co. LLC in New York. Disney’s gain came despite the biggest

movie flop in years with its sci-fi adventureepic “John Carter.” Disney officialsannounced in March that the film lost $200million; a month later, studio chief Rich Rossresigned. Fortunately for the company, a fewweeks later the studio’s “The Avengers” tookin more than $1 billion in global ticket salesin its first three weeks, along with millionsmore in product sales.

Occidental, meanwhile, shed $15 billionin market cap for an 18 percent drop in the12 months ended in June. The main culprit:falling crude oil prices. Unlike verticallyintegrated oil companies such as Irving,Texas’ Exxon-Mobil Corp., Occidental hasno refining facilities, so it only sells crudeoil. And with the global economy slowingover the past nine months, crude oil priceshave plummeted.

“The vast majority of Oxy’s decline inmarket cap has come from the recent declinein oil prices,” said Pavel Molchanov, an ana-lyst with St. Petersburg, Fla.-based RaymondJames & Associates.

Also losing big in market cap was No. 4DirecTV, which shed more than $7 billion, or18 percent. The El Segundo satellite TVprovider has been hit hard by slowing pene-tration in the U.S. market.

“Unlike cable companies, DirecTV cannotmonetize subscribers through the Internet –all they have is the satellite dish,” said MarciRyvicker, senior analyst with Wells FargoSecurities in New York. “It’s tough for themto branch out and make money elsewhere inthe U.S. market.”

No. 3 Amgen Inc. posted a modest gainof 5 percent in its market cap. Investorssnapped up shares as two of the ThousandOaks biotech giant’s new bone treatmentdrugs offer the best chance for long-sought-after blockbuster drug status. But the drugscurrently driving the bulk of the company’ssales are more mature, prompting some

investors to be cautious.Investors were more bullish on No. 5

Public Storage Co., which saw its marketcap grow by one-quarter. The Glendale self-storage company has benefited from a short-age of storage space as the housing bust andrecession have forced many Americans todownsize their living space and put moreitems into storage.

“Public Storage is benefiting from verylimited supply growth in the self-storagespace, which is helping to support pricingpower,” said Smedes Rose, an analyst withKeefe Bruyette & Woods in New York.

Newly renamed Mandalay Digital GroupInc. moved up the most spots on the list, climb-ing to No. 127 from No. 165 as its market capjumped to $63 million from $17 million.

Previously known as NeuMedia, the com-pany retooled to offer software for mobilephones that allows mobile phone companiesto collect money on applications instead ofwatching that money go to application devel-opers such as Apple Inc. The company alsobrought in as its new chairman Hollywoodproducer Peter Guber, chief executive ofMandalay Entertainment Group, a separateentity from Mandalay Digital.

The new management team immediatelyset out to recapitalize, more than doubling thenumber of shares to 81 million. Yet despite allthe new shares, the price rose from about 60cents to 80 cents.

“They’ve done a good job attractinginvestors,” said Bud Leedom, an analyst withMerriman Capital Inc. in San Francisco.

On the flip side, the company that moveddown the most spots was BNK PetroleumInc., which plunged 49 slots to No. 114 as itsmarket cap fell 85 percent. The Camarillocompany has been making a play for shalegas production in Poland, but well tests so farby BNK and other oil companies there haveindicated much less shale gas than initiallyanticipated. That in turn has soured investorson the company.

SPECIAL REPORT LARGEST & MOST PROFITABLE L.A. COMPANIES

Continued from page 21

By RICHARD CLOUGH Staff Reporter

THERE are plenty of familiar names atopthe Business Journal’s annual list of themost profitable Los Angeles County

companies. After all, lean-and-mean, high-mar-gin businesses Herbalife Ltd. and CherokeeInc. once again took the top two spots.

But there are also some unexpected names.A variety of companies, from toymaker

Mattel Inc. to restaurant chain ownerDineEquity Inc., were able to climb up therankings, demonstrating there is more than oneway to turn a profit even a sluggish economy.

DineEquity, the Glendale owner of theApplebee’s and IHOP restaurant chains, isoverhauling its entire business model in aprocess started several years ago. The compa-ny had owned many of its restaurants but isselling them off as it converts to a franchisemodel, which gives DineEquity royalties butinsulates it from fluctuations in commodityprices and other costs.

The process is starting to pay dividends:After ranking No. 119 out of 129 companieslast year, DineEquity surged all the way toNo. 17 on this year’s list. The companyreported record annual revenues of $75 mil-lion and in the process swung its averagereturn on equity from negative 67 percent lastyear to 18 percent this year.

“Instead of pulling in restaurant-level earn-ings, they’re now pulling in royalty fees,” saidWill Slabaugh, an analyst in Little Rock,

Ark., with Stephens Inc. “It’s made for amuch higher margin business.”

Each year, the Business Journal ranksthe most profitable local publicly tradedcompanies as determined by three-yearaverage return on equity. By that measure,it was a mixed year overall for the county’s

companies.Herbalife, the downtown L.A. company

that uses a global network of independent dis-tributors to sell nutritional supplements anddiet shakes, saw a slight dip in return on equi-ty, to 72 percent, but retained its top rankingfor the third straight year. Cherokee, a VanNuys licenser of affordable apparel, upped itsROE modestly to 60 percent.

But not every company made such strides.Mall operator Macerich Co., last year’s 50thmost profitable company, fell to No. 61 amiddownsizing by many retail tenants, particular-ly large bookstores. Dole Food Co. Inc. felleven farther, plummeting from No. 25 lastyear to No. 60 this year.

Westlake Village-based Dole, which hadan average return on equity of less than 5 per-cent, has suffered from falling commodityprices and weak sales in Europe. After its firstquarter earnings, in which revenue andincome were down year over year, the compa-ny announced a strategic review that couldresult in the separation of its business lines.

Improving profitsThe risers have come from all industries,

though. Online marketing companyValueClick Inc. and real estate companyCBRE Group Inc. both improved profitabili-ty. Many of the biggest movers were firmswilling to focus on internal operations andreducing expenses.

Consider El Segundo’s Mattel, which sig-

nificantly upped its margins, an unexpectedfeat for the country’s largest toy company.Until recently, the maker of Barbie and HotWheels was burdened with high overheadcosts, said Linda Bolton Weiser, an analystwith Caris & Co. in New York.

“They were pretty fat,” she said. But in 2009, the company launched the

first of consecutive two-year cost-cutting pro-grams, dubbed Operational Excellence 1 and2. The programs focused on improving effi-ciency in Mattel’s manufacturing plants andsupply chain, reducing head count in certainareas and cutting legal expenses. The compa-ny plans to trim $175 million from expenses.

“It’s still not the leanest, meanest companyout there, but it’s gotten better,” Bolton Weisersaid. “That will improve their profit margins.”

The cost cuts coincided with strong salesgrowth due to its popular line of toys relatedto the “Cars 2” movie last year.

With an average return on equity of morethan 26 percent, Mattel was the fourth mostprofitable company in the county. It has beensteadily climbing the rankings. Two yearsago, it was the 18th most profitable company;last year it ranked 11th.

In a conference call with analysts lastweek, Chief Executive Bryan Stockton point-ed to Operational Excellence as a major driv-er in its strong recent earnings.

“We continue to work very hard to man-age our overall basket of costs, includingcommodities, currency and labor,” he said.
