    Marcus Mete, son

    of

    David and

Miriam Mendenhall Mote, was bom June

    19 ,

    1817

near West Milton, Ohio . Marcus was a f if th

    generation birthright

    American

    Quaker.

    His

parents were menbers of West Branch Monthly Meeting of The

    Religious Society of Friends.

Mote moved to the Waynesville, Ohio area in th e

    late

    1830s. He taught

    a t

    the

Turtle Creek School in Warren County, Ohio, just southeast of Waynesville

    in

    1836 and 1837. At

    that

    time, he

    attended

    Quarterly Meeting in Waynesville

MiamiMeeting) vbere at one time he was clerk

    of the

    Meeting. Miami Meeting

    members

    protested

    his

    a rt

    work. Quakers

    a t

    that

    time

    as

    earlier

    were traditionally

    not schooled

    in

    the fine

    arts.Such

    interest and vocations were

    considered

    worldly

    and

    frivolous

    and were

    not

accepted by the religious gmup vhich

    advocated

    plainess

    in

a ll aspects of daily l i fe. Mote s talents and art work almost

    got

    him

    dosowned

    by the Meeting.

While teaching a t Turtle Creek School, Mote was t aken with Rhoda Steddcm, one of

    his

    students, also a f i f th

    generation birthright

    American

    Quaker.

    Marcus

    and

    Rhoda were married November 11, 1837 a t

    Meeting

    House

    a t

    Waynesville before moving to West

    Milton

    vhere the f i r s t of the i r chi ldra i were bom.

The couple retumed to the Waynesville area with their family a few years

    They resided in

    Friends

    by

    Rhoda's

    family.

    The

    house s t i l l

    stands

and in 1989 is owned by James Thombury. Marcus planned to

    use an unf in ished

    roan

    in the

    home

    for his studio and

    may

    have

    for a

    short period.

    However,

    most of

    his

    work

    centered

in Lebanon, Ohio, Warren County seat, vhere he frequently painted

    portrai ts a t

the Golden amb Inn. He also

    painted

    in

    the

surrounding v il lages vh il e

keeping Lebanon as a base fo r h is airt work.

    Marcus

    found

    t di f f icu l t to

    col lect

    debts.

    His

    portrai t work was not

    popular with

the public a t f ir st . He tumed to other work to make a

    l iv ing.

    Mote

    decorated

    stagecoaches for the

Mote's landscapes cu:e somber and scmevhat dreary. They

    reflect

    a primitive

    of technique coupled with Quaker

    simplicity.

    A painting done on
