“Am I talking to a brick wall?”

Page 4: Mother Knows Best

“Am I talking to a brick wall?”1. First, I found all the images that I wanted to use and I saved them to my

pictorial essay folder.2. Using the magnetic lasso tool, I was able to highlight all necessary parts

that I wanted to use from the individual pictures.3. Then using the move tool I was able to put all the selected areas of the

pictures onto one layer. After doing so, the individual pictures were all placed in the right location.

4. What I then did was use the free transformation to resize, rotate and shift everything into place so that it looked more realistic. The crop tool was also used to take of the unwanted sides of the picture.

5. Finally , I added a speech bubble with the ‘themed phrase’ in it so that people would better understand the meaning of the picture. I also altered the contrast, brightness, colors, and transparency to make everything blend a little better.

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite!” 1. For my second picture once again I searched the internet to find the different

picture that I wanted to use. They were all saved into my pictorial essay folder.2. This time I used the magnetic lasso tool as well as the polygonal lasso tool to

select the areas that I wanted to use.3. Again I moved them onto one layer. The insects were then resized, rotated and

shifted into the right place throughout the room. I also added two eyes underneath the bed.

4. Then I decreased the brightness of the picture so that it would give it a more “night time” feel. I also felt that the blue in the picture should be brought out more for the same reason.

5. Again A speech bubble was added with the ‘themed phrase’ in it. I decided to make the speech bubble slightly transparent because I felt it looked better.

6. Then once again using the magnetic lasso tool, I was able to go over the individual pictures (insects and eyes) to remove the white outlines around them. I simply selected the white outline and deleted it.

“Close the door! What do we live in a barn?”

• For my final picture I used three pictures. One was used as the background and was a picture of a barn. The other two were simply a picture of a mother screaming and the other was a young boy.

• The magnetic lasso tool was used to outline both figures. Then they were moved onto the background layer of the barn.

• I resized both the mother and child so that they were proportional to the background picture.

• Then, I needed to use the cloning stamp and patch tool to remove writing that was on the shirt.

• The mother also had to be shifted to make it seem like she was yelling at the boy.

• As usual, I added the speech bubble so it looked like she was yelling the phrase.

• As a final touch, I altered the colors, contrast, and brightness of the picture.

“Eat your crust…it will make your hair curly.”

• 1. I found the stars image and used that as my background and first layer.2. I opened the picture of the little girl and used the magnetic lasso to select the bottom half of the image.3. I selected the image and dragged it over the stars as a second layer.4. I then used the magic wand to delete some of the leftover white around the girl’s head.5. I then opened the third picture of Rapunzel and used the elliptical lasso to select and drag it into the new picture.6. I went to Edit – Free Transform and pressed Shift and shrunk the size of the picture7. I arranged it above the girl’s head to look like a thought bubble.8. I then used the brush tool at a large size and made some dots to add to the thought bubble.9. Then I added a text box with a mother’s quote : “Eat your crust..it will make your hair curly.”

“Don’t sit too close to the TV, it’ll ruin your eyes.”

Page 12: Mother Knows Best

“Don’t sit too close to the TV, it’ll ruin your eyes.”

• 1. I opened the photo of the television to use as the background.

2. Then I opened the picture of the little boy.

3. Using the smudge tool, I swirled the brush in circles within the frames of his glasses.

4. Then I used the magnetic lasso to cut out the picture of just the boy (without the background).

5. I dragged the boy’s head onto the screen of the TV.

6. I used the magnetic lasso to clean up some of the extra pieces around the boy’s head.

7. I merged the layers so I would be able to use the clone stamp.

8. I used the clone stamp to smooth out some of the edges where the TV and the boy’s head meet.

9. Then I selected the Text option and typed in the quote, “Don’t sit too close to the TV, it’ll ruin your eyes!”

10. I bolded the text and made it a large q enough font so that it would be easy to read.

11. I centered the text so that it would fit between the legs of the TV.

“My house. My rules.”

Page 14: Mother Knows Best

“My house. My rules.”• 1. The first thing I did was open the picture of a mom and used the Magnetic Lasso to crop her out.

2. I dragged the cropped image of mom into my new picture.

3. Since the picture was so big, I had to use Free Transform and make the image smaller.

4. I dragged the transformed picture of mom over to the left of my new image.

5. I opened the picture of the house.

6. Then I used the magnetic lasso to cut out the picture of the house.

7. I used the Free Transform option to shrink the picture and move it closer to the mom on the left.

8. I used the Magic Wand to clean up some of the edges.

9. Then I opened up the picture of the Ten Commandments and cut it out using the Magnetic Lasso.

10. I used the Free Transform option to make the Ten Commandments smaller and move them to the right.

11. Then I used the text option to add “My house.” (next to the picture of the home)

12. I used the text option again to add “My rules.” (next to the picture of the 10 Commandments)

“Cupcakes are not a breakfast food!”

• I found all the images I wanted to use in my picture from the internet. I had them in their own separate layers then I cut them out of their original picture using the magic wand and put them in the picture of the kitchen. The parts I wanted to take out, I used the eraser tool. Using the transform tool, I resized the images and put all of them where I wanted them in the kitchen by copying the layers and pasted them on the kitchen layer. I made sure to put certain layers behind others so that the picture would look more realistic. I did that by putting one layer underneath another. I used the textbox tool to write the mother's saying.

“When you have your own house, you can make the rules.”

“When you have your own house, you can make the rules.”

• The quote for this picture was, when you have your own house then you can make the rules. I remember my mom saying this and so I thought of rules that a kid would want for his own house. I took three pictures of an angry mom, a house and a kid with a thought bubble and cut them out using the magic wand tool and then I copied and pasted them on the base image which was the one of the kid with the thought bubble. I had to transform the pictures to make them smaller to fit in the bubble. I also utilized the textbook tool a lot so that I could write the rules.

Page 19: Mother Knows Best

“I’m your mother, not your maid!”

Page 20: Mother Knows Best

“I’m your mother, not your maid!”• For this picture I used the saying, "clean this up, I am your mother

not your maid!" I have definitely heard that before and thought it would be fun to illustrate it. I used pictures of a messy room, a maid, and an angry child. I used the messy room as the background layer for my picture and lowered the opacity of it. I then used the polygonal lasso tool to cut out the maid and the child and moved them to the background layer. I then used the free transform tool to change the shape of the pictres and also rotate them. Although there are some cartoon and some real people in the picture, I thought it was an interesting dynamic because the maid isn't real, the child only wishes he had a maid.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees!”

Page 22: Mother Knows Best

“Money doesn’t grow on trees!”• I first found a picture of a sunroom, thinking that would be the best place for a tree. Then,

I found a picture of a "money tree", angry mother, and child who looks bored with the mother's annoyance. I used google and typed in keywords to find the images. Then, I went to photoshop. I made a new layer via copy of the sunroom and used the transformation tool to adjust the size. Then I used the magnetic lasso to cut the money tree since the orginal background of the picture was white. I once again adjusted the size with the transformation and then used the eraser tool to get rid of remains of the white background near the pot of the tree. Then I used the magnetic lasso to cut the girl out and used the tool to move that image. Once again, I used the transformation to adjust her size. The table followed the same pattern as the girl. Then for the mother, I used the magnetic lasso to cut her out, used the transorm option to adjust the size, and used the eraser tool to get rid off remains from the previous background. For the text, I used the pencil tool to make the dots and then used the text tool to write the quote and to express the child's boredom. I also played around with the text and changed the color and font. For the X, I used the brush tool and changed the color to make it different and not all black. I also used the clone tool to correct any mistakes that occurred on the sunroom layer and to get rid of the writing on the women's shirt that had the name of the website.

“What do you think this room is? A pigsty?”

Page 24: Mother Knows Best

“What do you think this room is? A pigsty?”

• I used an empty barn as the background and used the layer and create new layer via copy to get the barn on the empty photoshop document. I used the clone tool to get rid of the hay so that all that existed was an empty barn. I also used the transform option to adjust the size of the barn. Then, I used the magnetic lasso to cut out just the bed and nightstand so I could place these two items in the document; I also used the transform option for size adjustment. After, since I had accidentally cut off a Belle doll's head with the magnetic lasso I used the eraser tool and clone stamp to make Belle disappear. The eraser tool was used for the top half of her body and the clone tool was used to make the bottom half become just another part of the nightstand. I also used the eraser tool to get rid of the excess parts of the original picture that had transferred over when I used the magnetic lasso. I then used the magnetic lasso to get just the pigsty sign incorporated into my picture and once again used the transform button to adjust its size. I cut the laying down pig with the magnetic lasso and then made all the other layers invisible and used the clone stamp to add more of a leg and the eraser tool to get rid of the excess picture that the pig came from. The transform option was also used to change the size. The pig sitting up I used the magnetic lasso tool and then hid all the layers and used the eraser tool to get rid of the white between the legs. I also used the free transform option to adjust the size. For the feeding trough, I used the magnetic lasso to cut it out. I used the free transform button to adjust the size and then made all the layers hidden and used the eraser tool to erase some edges and make it look smoother. The little girl I cut out with the magnetic lasso and then used the eraser tool to get rid of the white. I did the same for the laundry basket. I used the magnetic lasso to cut out the stuffed animals. For the text, I used the text tool and typed in the saying and then changed the color, font, and size to something that worked with the image. For the black dots, I used the pencil and adjusted the brush size.

“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!”

Page 26: Mother Knows Best

“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!”

• I used the layer option and then made a new layer via copy for the background which is the playroom. Then I used the free transform option to make the image smaller. Then I used the magnetic lasso for Hermione granger and the eraser tool to erase stuff that remained from the original picture. I then used the free transform to adjust her size. For the other little girl once again I used the magnetic lasso to get her out of the photo, eraser to get rid of remnants from original photo, and free transform option to adjust her size. The for circles leading to the quotes I used the pencil tool and simply made the pencil bigger so the dots would be more noticeable. Then for each text/saying I used the text option. For each of the three sayings I made the font bigger and changed the color and size.
