Mother Mary’s Canning was incorporated in 2010, but the seed for the company was planted 25 years earlier in a small kitchen in Northern Michigan. A love of canned foods was natural to Mary. Her parents were raised on farms during the Depression, and canned foods were staples while she was growing up.

In 2003, Mary helped the local Girl Scouts learn how to can her highly-sought applesauce. In the kitchen of a local church, the Girl Scouts produced more than 100 quarts and sold them within three days. What started as a charitable fundraiser put the family on a path toward an entrepreneurial endeavor. By 2007, the Barkers produced more than 1,000 quarts and pints from their home kitchen.

Mother Mary’s Canning LLC got its start at The Starting Block, startingblock.biz, in Hart, Michigan. The incubator kitchen has assisted many small business entrepreneurs in West Michigan, successfully producing a wide variety of food products.
