Frame of Reference
To tell an object is moving we must compare the object to something else.
A reference point is an object used to determine another objects motion.

Motion
Motion is the change in position of an object over time.
![Page 11: Motion. How do we know something is moving?](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062806/5697bfc41a28abf838ca62b7/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Speed/Rate and Velocity
Speed/Rate is the distance an object moves in a certain period of time.
Velocity is the speed of an object in a specific direction.
To solve for speed, take the distance and divide the time.

Graphing Motion
Line Graph-Time vs. Distance The slope of two points on the graph will tell
you the speed.

Solving For Speed
If Mr. Cleland runs 10 meters in 2 seconds, what is his speed?
5 m/s If Mr. Parke throws a baseball 12 meters in 4
seconds, what is the speed of the ball? 3 m/s

Time=distance/speed Distance=time x speed If Mr. Whiting runs 15 meters at a speed of 3
m/s, how long does it take him?5 seconds
If Ms. Hetrick runs for 5 seconds at a speed of 4 m/s, how far has she ran?20 meters

Acceleration
The rate speed/rate at which velocity changes. If speed or direction change.
Acceleration is final speed – starting speed divided by time.

If Mrs. Greiser is driving and accelerates from 10 m/s to 16 m/s in 3 s, what is her acceleration?
2 m/s^2
