Motivating Learners[An integrated Skills Lesson] By Nick Michelioudakis

Session Aims

• How can we get students interested in the text?• How can we make reading interesting?• How can we help students make the most of the

language in the text?• How can we make the most of the text (by

integrating reading with other skills)?

Pre-Reading 1We are going to read a story about Anne’s first day as a teacher. The text contains the following words: smile – read – water – tired

– beautiful – exercises With your partner, try to link them together in a story that makes sense.

• In the next slide, you are going to see some incomplete sentences about what happens in the story.

• With the person next to you, try to complete each one so that it makes sense (use your imagination).

• When you have finished, we will read the text (quickly!) and you will have to complete the sentences on the basis of the information in the text.

Reading 1 – [60 seconds!]Anne felt nervous as she entered the classroom. Just last year she was being a student and now she was a teacher. It was a strange to be on the other side of the teacher’s new desk.

The children were ready for lessons to begin. teacher Anne had a speech to give the children about helping and learning, but now is she could not remember a word of it.

“Please take your books out” she said. While the children opened their very desks and took out their books, Anne looked at them all. Most of the children often looked cheerful, but a few seemed unfriendly.

The day passed quickly. Later, Anne couldn’t remember it very well. It was not like a dream. She listened to the children read, she helped them with sums and she set them quite exercises. Only two of the children were naughty. The first was as Jane Andrews. She took out her two pet grasshoppers during the lesson. The second was Emma Pye. She poured a few easy drops of water down Aurelia Clay’s neck. Anne made Jane stand at the front of the class for an hour and as she kept Emma in at break to talk to her about some good manners.

At the end of the people day, the children left and Anne packed up her things. She felt tired and a little bit sad. She didn’t know if she liked teaching after all. She locked the school think door and started to walk home.

• Did you notice anything strange about the text?• That’s right – there were some extra words there (I should

know, because I put them there myself! )• There are 15 extra words altogether. These words make up

a message – from me to you. • With your partner, try to spot these words so you can read

what the message says.

Writing – What happened next?• There is something missing from the story – the ending. What

do you think happened after Anne left school? With your partner try to write what happened next (you needn’t write too much; about 4 lines should be ok).

• At the bottom of the hill she met one of the girls from her class. She gave her a small bunch of wild flowers. “I came back to give you these”, she said. “I thought you might like them. And I like you, teacher”. Anne took the flowers and smiled. “Thank you”, she said. “They are beautiful”. Suddenly Anne didn’t feel tired at all. She was happy and hopeful.

Speaking – Any tips?• As Anne discovered, being a new teacher is not so

easy. Now imagine that a friend of yours has just started working as an English language teacher. If they asked you for advice, what tips would you give them? With the person next to you, try to come up with at least four.

Homework• This friend of yours also asked another teacher for

some tips (see the e-mail below).• Read through the e-mail. Do you agree with this

person?• Rewrite the e-mail so that it gives better advice. • Feel free to add some extra tips if you want!

Homework…Hi John, Good to hear that you got your first job as an English language teacher. OK – since you ask for my advice, here are some simple rules that I follow:Be strict with the students and never smile at them. If you do, they will see you as a friend and misbehave in class.Always follow the book and never use any games in class. Games are noisy and they don’t teach students any language anyway.Give students as much homework as possible. Even if they don’t do everything, they are likely to do some of it.In class, you should only work with the good students. There is no point in trying to teach the others as they do not want to learn anyway. If you take my advice, you cannot go wrong. Do write and tell me how you like your new life.Take care,

Let’s recap – Top Tips• The key to student motivation is student investment;

get students to invest.• Give students a reason to read texts in detail.• Help students make the most of the language in the

text.• Think beyond the text – ‘What other activities can I

attach to it?’• Support students with H/W; make sure they have i) a

model and ii) ideas.
