interactionofcurrentsflowinginthealuminumrotorbarsandthecopperstatorsrotatingmagnetic
field.Therotorfollowsbehindthestatorsrotatingmagneticfield.

Mostinductionmotorapplicationsoperateintermittentlyanddonotconstantlyrunaunderfullload.IE
themotorstartsandstopsfrequentlyandisusuallyonlypartiallyloaded,butfullpowerisusedupand
resultsinheatandelectricallosses.Thereisnodoubtthatthebasicconceptofreducingthevoltageon
amotorwhichisoperatingatlessthanmaximumefficiencycanresultinareductionoftheironlossof
themotor.
With
apartially
loaded
motor,
areduction
in
the
voltage
applied
to
the
motor
will
reduce
theironloss.Butwhatifwecoulddomore?Wecan,andthisiswhereRVmodecomesintoplay.
Reducingthevoltageoninductionmotorsoperatingatlessthanfullloadreducesthewastedenergy
thatsconsumed.Alsobyaddinginpowerfactorcorrectionwithcapacitors(tuningtheRUNcapvalues
toeachindividualloadrequirement)allowsthemotortosynchronizewiththeneedsoftheload.Then
byaddinginafrequencydriveorpulsewidthmodulationintothemixanadvancedpowermanagement
(RV)configurationisattained.Typicallyinengineeringpracticeasimilarprocessisused.Thisprocess
runsthreephasemotorsfromsinglephasepowerandusescapacitorsonthemotorsasanadda
phasesetup.
Running3PHmotorsfrom1PHpowerviastartandruncapacitorsisnothingnew,howeverRVmodeis
notlikethecommonaddaphasesetup,butmorerelatedtoimpedancematchingbytuningthe
capacitorvalues,voltage,frequencyandpulsewidthinadvancedconfigurations.TheRVprincipleis
basedonmatchingthesourcetotheneedsoftheload[asfirstreferencedbyNikolaTesla].
InathreephaseRVmotorexample,themotorisrunfromasinglephasepowersupplybyusing
capacitorstogeneratethethirdphase.Inatypical60hertzconfiguration,themotorswindingsare
connectedinseries(to480Vhighvoltagemode),butthemotorisdrivenfroman110Vgrid(operatingat
ofthevoltage).ThemotorwillthenrunatareducedHPcapacitybutthiswillbethemostefficient
andtheHPcanberaisedusingafrequencydrive.
TheHIimpedanceand3rdphasegenerationcreatesatransformeralikeoperationwherepoweris
managedmoreeffectively.BothsinglephaseandthreephasemotorscanberuninRVmode.However
asinglephasedemandsmorecapacitancetoruninRVmodeasitisalowerimpedancethananormal

motoris0.9ohms.The36voltmotoris2.8ohms.BecauseIhavespentmanyyearsinventingcircuitryfor
DCmotorsimprovingthereefficiencyIhavealsolearntwaystoochangetheirtorqueandtemperature
operation.VirtuallyallDCmotorscanbeadjustedsotheyruncooler,andthiswedobylooseningthe
boltsthatrunthroughthemotorandretardthecasethatsupportsthepermanentmagnets.
Theshaftistooruninaclockwisedirection,weslackenthethroughboltsandturnthemagnetcasing
anticlockwiseacoupledegreesoratleastuntilitcantturnanyfurther.Normallythisiswherethelong
throughboltsthatareintheelongatedslotbetweenthemagnetspullupagainstonesideofthe
magnets.Oncethisisdone,theDCmotorhasnowgotmuchmoretorqueandwilloperatefarcooler
thaneverbefore.
ItdoesslowtheRPMdownsomewhatrunningonitsown,buthasnoeffectwiththeoperationofthe
RV,asanaturalbalancetakesplacewithRPMandvoltagewhereboththeRVandDCmotor
automaticallystayintune.Itmaybewisetooputaconventionalscientificexplanationwhythe2
motorsruntogetherinharmony,andwhythecurrentusagenowdropsdownfurtherinthisoperation,

NowcloseloopingwiththeDCoutputtooaninverterisabigNO.ButthereisaYES.FirstofallIwill
explainasbestasIcanwhy.Electronshaveaformofmemorywheretheydonotliketobesentbackto

AnotherthingIcanassureyouoffrommyexperienceisthatyoucanalsogetrunawayinthisclosed
loopsequence.Thisiswherethereturningenergyliftsthebatteryvoltageby2or3voltswhichinturn
liftstheoutputoftheinverterbymanymorevoltswhichinturnnowliftsthereturningenergybymany
morevoltsuntilwherethebatteryisunabletooholdasteadyvoltagebeingovercharged.Thisiswhere
somethingwillblow.
Thisiswhereweuse2batterieswheretheyalternate,sooneisrunningtheloadwhilethegenerated
outputischargingtheotherbattery.Afterashortperiodoftimewethenswitchinthechargedbattery
towork,andswitchintheotherbatterytoonowbecharged.Sowithasimplerelaycircuit,theDC
motorcanbechargingasecondbatteryforsometime,thenthisbatterycanlatterbeswitchedintoo

Thesquirrelcagecanactuallybeconsideredasatransformersecondarywinding,whichisin"shorted"

primaryvirtualinductance(andthusthetotalimpedance)decreasesverymuchandlotofcurrentwillbe

2ofthesedirectlywithsomesinusoidalvoltage,whichcreatessomecurrentin2ofthestatorcoils(they
areconnectedinseriesincaseofYconnection).Thiscurrentinthesecoilswilllagtheappliedvoltageby
90degreesduetotheinductivenatureofthesewindings.Thethirdterminalisfedthroughacapacitor.
Thiscompensatesthelaggingofcurrent(acurrentwhichisgoingthroughacapacitorwillbeleadingthe
appliedvoltageby90degrees)inthethirdstatorcoil.Therewillbecreatedarotatingmagneticfieldin
thestatorwindings,whichwillinducethecurrentininitiallystaticsquirrelcagerotorwindings.
Thesquirrelcagecanactuallybeconsideredasatransformersecondarywinding,whichisin"shorted"
statewhentherotorisjuststartingitsrotation.Andwhathappenswhenyoushortatransformer?Its
primaryvirtualinductance(andthusthetotalimpedance)decreasesverymuchandlotofcurrentwillbe
neededfrom
the
power
source.

is
that
to
maintain
this
rotating
magnetic
field
in
the
stator
when
therotorisjustaccelerating,wehavetosupplyalotofcurrenttoALLofthestatorwindings.
That'swhyweneedmuchbiggercapacityforthestartcapXc=1/(2*PI*f*C)wearehavingconstant
frequencyandinordertopassmorecurrenttothethirdcoilalsoweneedtodecreasethereactive
resistanceofthecapacitor,thusweneedtoincreasethecapacitor'svalue.Sowewillusethestartcap
thatisabletopassalmostsimilaramountofcurrenttothethirdstatorcoilalso.
Nowwhentherotorcomesuptospeed,therotatingmagneticfieldofthestatorwillcutlessandless.
Thesquirrelcagewindingsandthevirtualtransformershortingeffectdecreasesandthustheneeded
current
from
the
power
source
also
decreases.

we
still
have
the
big
start
cap
in
place,
then
it'sXc(reactivecapacitance)willbesosmallwhencomparedwiththethirdstatorwinding'sXL(reactive

winding).ThisadviceisvalidonlyfortheprimemoverinUNLOADEDCASE(thecasewhenwedonot
havedragonthealternatorfromresonance).Thevaluesofthecapacitorsandcomponentsarespecific
tothemotorsizeused.
Thestartingcapis100to200uF,therunningcapisfrom7to40uF(370Voilcaps).Startingcapistogive
aboostfrom0.Bigmotorsrequireittoacquiretorquetomovetherotormassplusalternatormassto
rotationalRVeffectspeed.Theruncapacitorischosenastomaintainbest120degreerotationwithin
the3PHwindingsundertheintendedtargetload.

Whenproperlytuned,itshouldhaveaPFofascloseto1asyoucanget.APFof1iswhenthereactive
componentsC&Lcanceleachothersimpedanceandtheapparentpower=thetruepower.Inaparallel
resonantcircuittheimpedanceasseenfromthesourcegoestoahighlevel(PMunloaded).Whenthe
PMisloadedmoretruepowerisdissipatedsotheimpedancegoesdown.WiththePMunderloadyou
havetoretunetheCboxforbestPF(closestto1).Forthealtcircuitwearedealingwithaseries
resonantcircuitconfiguration.Inaseriesresonantcircuitthesourceseesminimumimpedanceat
resonance.
Thealternatorside
NowweareconnectingtheRVprimemoverwithanotheridenticalmotortobecomethealternator
side.Asweneedtoachieveaparallelresonancecondition.(ornearlysuchkindofresonancecondition)
intheprimemover(whentheRValternatorpartisloadedwithneededload),sothattheconsumed
powerfromthepowersupplywillbeminimal.

WhenweareloadingtheRVprimarywithsomemechanicalforce(likeloadedalternatorforexample),
wearereducingtherotorsspeed,therevolvingstatorfieldwillcutmoreofthesquirrelcagewindings,
thetransformerkindofloadingeffectincreasesandstatorwindingsvirtualresistancedecreases.Your
goalistofindaproperruncapforthisproperloadedstateofoperationtoachievesuchstate,thatthe
consumedcurrentfrompowersourcewouldbeminimal.
WhenloadingtheRVprimemover,wewillgetclosertoresonantstateandthecurrentthatisconsumed
fromthepowersupply,WILLNOTincreaselinearlywithloading,butmayevenDECREASEduetothe
fact,thattheoverallsystemresistancemightbeseveraltimesbiggerduetohighQnonlineareffect.
Theoppositeistruetoalternatorpartthereyouwillwanttocreatemaximumcurrentinstator
windingsandalsomaximumvoltageinstatorwindingsandallthiswithoutcausingTOOmuchdragto
theprimemover.SobasicallywithRVyouneedtotune2caps,thealternatorcapandalsotheruncap.
Firstuseabitbiggerruncap,getthealternatortoproperlygenerate(byselecting/changingthevalueof
alternator'svectoringcap)withoutboggingdowntheprimemover.
Alsoyou
need
to
do
the
tuning
in
the
LOADED
state,
where
some
useful
load
is
also
connected
to
the
alternator.So,whenthealternatorworksandloadispowered,thentunealsotheprimemover'srun
captotheminimalvalueofconsumedcurrentfromthepowersupply(ofcourseyouneedtokeepthe
alternatorrunningtoo,soreducingtheruncaptooabruptlycancausetheprimemovertolosetoo
muchofit'sdrivingpowerandalternatormightstop).
TheessenceofRVisnotrunningonminimalcurrentifidle.Theessenceistohave2motorsconnected,
oneasmotorandtheotherasgenerator.Aloadwillbeconnectedtogenerator(havingit'sdual
windingsinparallel,thuslowQ,motorparthasit'sdualwindingsinseries=>highQ,biginductivity)and

NowwehaveaHighQnarrowbandmotorpartdrivinglowQwidebandalternatorpartwithdesired
load.Motorpartwillbetunedtoresonanceandthisresonancewillcontributealotofmechanical
powertothealternatorpartwhileconsumingminimalpowerfromthepowersupply.Themotorpart
shouldhaveUvoltagedriving4*Uratedwindings,thisgivessomeheadroomforresonantriseand
resonantamplificationeffectswithouttheironssaturating.
Ifrunwithoutloadwiththesameruncap,themotorpartwillnothaveminimumcurrentbecauseCrun
forloadedcaseisbiggerthanCrunforidlecase.SoinidlemodetheRVprimary'sinputcurrentwillbe
