INTRODUCTION Pennsylvania-based Airmatic Inc., a female-owned firm operating

since the 1940s, provides sales and service of a variety of tools, machinery, and repair parts. The company’s product lines are available to industrial, public utility, and construction markets. Airmatic Inc., operating through three distinct divisions – Materials Management Group, Tool Group, and Service Group – produces a range of case studies dealing with best practices in using its products available on its website.

One study explains the necessity of using motorized conveyor pulleys in order to achieve optimum efficiency and productivity in agricultural operations employing corrosive materials. A client company achieved an increase in its conveyor uptime approaching 2,000 percent after consulting with Airmatic about the problem.

INDUSTRIAL CORROSION The client’s production process involved conveying a soil admixture of

manure and hay into holding areas, where it aged over a month’s time. At the conclusion of the month, the mixture had to be transported onto trays to be used in the growing of agricultural produce.

The problem originated in the fact that the client company’s conveyor system had been relying on shaft-mounted gear reducers that rusted and corroded easily. The culprit was the acid-based gas that resulted from the natural aging of the needed soil mixture. The seals and bearings of the reducers in this case quickly became unusable due to the corrosion, and wore down several times in the course of a year.

After the consultation, the client’s maintenance and inventory costs decreased, and its window of production time increased, thanks to recommended Rulmeca motorized pulleys.
